Subject: Boys! Y'all are silly ;PSo my husband put up a Bluebird box on one of the deck posts outside of the kitchen. It's been really fun to watch our Bluebird pair find the box, lay five eggs and wait for them to hatch. But we've had some interesting developments: After all five eggs were laid, we found a pile of bluebird feathers and remnants on the deck. We saw the female coming back and forth to the box, but no male. Dang. Single mother with five on the way. We read up on if female Bluebirds could raise babies on there own, and they can, but it's hard/stressful. The next day the eggs started hatching, and all of the sudden there's a male Bluebird hanging around. We have multiple theories on this guy, but my husband keeps calling him "Step Daddy" and will bust into Step Daddy lyrics (Too Short) every time he seems him at the box. Hilarious, btw. We haven't seen him bring a single worm to the box. This morning the male keeps throwing himself into the glass on the west side of the house (nest is on the north). He's trying to fight his reflection, but in doing so he's going to break his neck or wing, or something. I keep going out to shoo him away from the window, but he keeps coming back to battle. Oy. Boys. I tell ya. There you go, getting killed, mooching off mama for a mating opportunity, and picking fights. Classic. |
