Eastman Splash, Mash & Dash Sprint Triathlon
64F / 18C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 15m 11s
Overall Rank = 23/180
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 2/10
Pre-race routine:

Drive an hour and a half to the race site.
Event warmup:

Jump in the water and get about 300-400 yards in to get used to the cold water.
Swim
  • 09m 10s
  • 586 yards
  • 01m 34s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was a pretty good swim for me. I haven't swam in a while and I was able to find someone's feet that made it pretty easy to follow and the swim was actually an easy to moderate pace for me.
What would you do differently?:

Not much with this amount of training.
Transition 1
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

My damn wetsuit always gets stuck!!! I'm not sure how to fix that problem, but my giant feet don't help the situation!
What would you do differently?:

Slow and methodical.
Bike
  • 37m 25s
  • 12 miles
  • 19.14 mile/hr
Comments:

I held back too much on the bike. My stomach was being a bit funny, so I just didn't push it enough. I was feeling good and could have pushed harder.

Feet were numb as well.
What would you do differently?:

Just go balls out.
Transition 2
  • 00m 49s
Comments:

T2 went very smooth. I jammed my feet into my shoes and couldn't even feel them.
Run
  • 26m 25s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 17s  min/km
Comments:

For the first mile I could not push off. My toes were completely numb and I couldn't get a rhythm at all. I was finally able to settle in and was sucking wind hardcore by the end. Finally with about 1.25 miles left to go the guy who won my AG ran by. He was CRUISING...I kept him in site for about two minutes. As soon as we hit the hills on the trail, he was gone. Happy to have led my AG race until this point, I checked my rearview mirror and cruised into the finish strong.
Post race
Warm down:

soaked the legs in the cold lake and had some brunch.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Limited swim training and not toughing it out. It's all in my head.

Event comments:

This race is just awesome....great venue and great people. Post race food is AWESOME.

You are a brave man, water is still a little too cold for me. I order my wetsuit next week. Kudos to you on a great race, I would of had numb feet on that run as well.

Jonathan great race for a guy who hasn't been training much lately. Geez I hate to see what you'd do if you got some more training time in. Seriously great effort and congrats for finishing 2nd in your AG. Sounds like it was a tough race with the feet going numb but you got done.

Looks like a solid race to me.  Well, actually it looks like 2 solid races but I'm not seeing well right now. Wink

All things considered with the time you have been taking I think you had a good performance.  The bike would be easy to see where you would have disappointment knowing how well you perform on the bike normally.  Either way, to get 2nd in AG has to be satisfying, so a big Congratulations!!

Great race Jonathan. Great effort, especially on the run and given the training you've been able to get in. That's a great run on a pretty difficult course which is absolutely a few tenths longer than a 5k.

And I know you are just saying that about the bike because I beat your time - I saw you hammering out there! JK, you'd have crushed me if you laid down the wood. I will take credit for adding a few seconds to your T1 with my distracting talking, thereby giving you some added rest before the bike started.

Congratulations on your podium spot, Jonathan!   Think of what you could've done without your recent eye problems and lower training volume.   Wow - your tri season is off to a great start!   I'm happy for you!

At mile ten I heard a noise like I had gotten paper in my spokes or something. I looked but saw nothing but a few seconds later my rear tire blows out.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.

Since I didn't have much time and since it's a super sprint, am I OK just go to at the training relatively hard through Thursday or even Friday?

The start for everyone is a crazy cluster of splashing. Here are some tips to deal with what some consider being the toughest part of any triathlon.
