Master  2504   Southwest Iowa |  Subject: Iowa Bicyclist KilledThe articles are saying a Lenox man was hit by a car on a county road about 1.5 miles from Lenox. I have not ridden that county road, but have ridden on many others in southwest Iowa.
The 33 year old female, said she hit a deer and didn't find the deer when she stopped to look for it. There have not been any charges filed at this time. |

Being a cop I have had to handle several really bad accidents with bike riders hit by cars and a few that were killed. After each one I quit riding the roads and get back on the trainer for a while Prayers to the victims family, sad news. |

Master 2504 Southwest Iowa | Subject: RE: Iowa Bicyclist Killed The wife and I ride the highway that has the wide shoulder with the rumble strips between the highway and the part added for bicycles. We were talking about this last night on the bike ride and she asked what I would do if I heard someone on the rumbles and I said I would head to the ditch and take whatever was in the tall grass and avoid the 2 ton plus vehicle that may not be paying attention, but that I would continue to ride my bike. I just don't know how to make it better for bicycles with all of the vehicles on the road with people texting or sleeping or eating or whatever while driving and not paying attention to changes. If they can't see me and my bright yellow jersey, they are definitely a person that should not be behind the wheel of a vehicle. |

Champion 5376 PA | Subject: RE: Iowa Bicyclist Killed In her defense, we do look a lot like deer while cycling. I know that I pulled up on a few cyclists in my time. Generally, the wheels and lack of ear hair gives it away but other than that how can a person tell the difference? Seriously, I agree with checking phone records ASAP! |
