Sunny
Total Time = 1h 19m 17s
Overall Rank = 103/215
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 23/39
Pre-race routine:

Had some pasta night before around 9 PM and went to bed around midnight, got up at 5 AM with only 3 1/2 hours sleep. Ate couple of kind bars a Gatorade on my way there and some Powergel gummies.
Event warmup:

Set up the transition area and headed out to the beach to stretch and warm up in the water for the swim. Might have overdone the warm up in the water in retrospect.
Swim
  • 11m 21s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

Where to start. Water temp was a little too warm and I think I might have gotten a little to happy on my warm up. First competitor in the water on the first wave in, I had to experience the washer machine and it was great. Then I started to feel tired after the second of 3rd of Buoy and swallowed what I though was normal amounts of salt water but they started to make me feel Nauseous pretty early into it and the water temp might have also generated that. Came out of the water tired but pretty darn good and ran up to the transition area.
What would you do differently?:

Easy on the warm up and not so many not mix so many powergel/drinks before.
Transition 1
  • 03m 58s
Comments:

My word this transition was very poor but the reason was because I was very nauseous from the swim. I thought at one point I was going to puke. Very lethargic and it seamed to take forever. All I have to do was throw goggles and cap on floor put glasses/helmet/socks/sneakers on but that was a mission because of how bad I felt.
What would you do differently?:

I would have done everything much faster had it not been nausea.
Bike
  • 36m 52s
  • 12 miles
  • 19.67 mile/hr
Comments:

The entire 12 miles I felt terrible !! I didn't get a break from the nausea the entire ride. I did a 19.6 MPH average but had I been remotely good I could have done 22-23 + MPH. I could not get myself to drink anything, not even a forced one. Was really worried about the run at that point.
What would you do differently?:

Not much I know I could have gone much faster had I not felt sick. Bike was still decent for my first TRI
Transition 2
  • 00m 40s
Comments:

I was very worried about the run because of my terrible tummy issue's on the bike, but the minute I jumped off I burped a couple of time and BOOM I felt so much better. Took helmet off, racked bike and took off.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, this was as good as I could have hoped for.
Run
  • 26m 25s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

It was like god threw me a bone, I got off the bike and was worried I might have to do some walking because of how nausea had played a role up until that point, and since I though the bike would have been my rest time and it turned out to be pretty bad in terms of feeling sick, I really thought the run would be the dagger. Well go off the bike and I felt better almost instantly. I partnered up with a really cute young girl and we pushed and motivated each other the whole ride. I was really happy about my run and to finally be able to perform without feeling sick. I beat my fastest 5K ever on race day by 20 seconds. Personally very happy.
What would you do differently?:

Towards the race not much it was my fastest 5K every and on race day after all the stomach problems. Going foward... sure we need to get faster maybe 7:30 per mile would be nice.
Post race
Warm down:

Water, Bagel and some TLC from wife and kid who ran the last 15 feet with me.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not much, beat my personal best.

Event comments:

I absolutely loved the event. Water was like a pool and warm. The hosted an amazing race. Too bad my stomach problems or I could have really surprised myself. After loosing 150Lbs I wanted to do this for myself and as I started training I just wanted to finish. Then I started looking at my time during training and based on last years time I figured if I could keep in a 01:30 I would be very happy.... Well every with all my initial troubles I did 1:19;17 and that Im very proud of.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

My first duathlon was a success. I had so many fears before the race but none of those fears happened. And when it was all over, I felt I had accomplished something big.
