Hi all,

This is my first post on the forum (actually my first post on any forum). I’ve been visiting the site for a few weeks now and reading articles and posts… all your stories are so encouraging and inspiring! Especially love the Race Reports. They really help to get an idea of what it’s going to be like. I am going to attempt my very first triathlon ever, the Rose Brooks Women’s triathlon (a sprint), 3 weeks from today. I’m getting a little anxious, but mostly excited! Like a lot of other beginners, my swim is the weak spot, but I managed 700 M today with only brief stops, so that was encouraging. Of course I had to switch to breaststroke sometimes- my freestyle isn’t that strong yet. I’m a little worried about it being an open water swim, but am hoping to get in a few training sessions at a local lake beforehand.

I’m not sure why exactly I want to do triathlons, besides the fact that they look really fun, and triathletes seem to be a cool bunch! I started running in college ~5 years ago to lose the extra 10 lbs I’d been carrying around, but never thought I’d get so addicted to exercising… I’m not the best at cycling or swimming (or even running for that matter!), I just think it’s a great way to spend time, and I love pushing myself. I’ve run a bunch of 5k’s and some 10 and 12k’s, and I love the atmosphere at races. I watched the Shawnee Mission Triathlon here in KC a couple weeks ago, and it seemed even more exciting there. I probably saw some of you there, too, without even realizing it! Hopefully, if all goes well, I’ll be racing alongside you next year!

Looking forward to chatting with you all!

Linda:

Your story is the story of many here!  You are amongst friends.  Welcome to BT!  The swim can be intimidating but you will soon find it to be the "easy" part of your race with some practice.  Sounds like you have some clearcut plans for the immediate future.  Good luck and again, welcome!

Thank you all for the welcomes! I was so glad to find this site... it's a great resources for all of us (especially us beginners).

Shepherd, that's awesome that Rose Brooks will be your first triathlon too. That would be fun to meet up and swap stories. I'm looking forward to the race so much... but a little nervous too.
I think it'll be a good first race, though, and there will probably be a lot of us first-timers. Have you been out to that area before? I'd like to check it out beforehand, but probably won't be able to. I'm wondering how hilly the bike will be... just got back from a ride and I'm TIRED!

Good luck with your training!

I'm pretty sure several other gals here on BT will be there as well.

Definitely starting to feel the nervousness... but I'm also ready and raring!

As for the elevation profile, I got tired of waiting for them to post it. So I used Gmap-Pedometer and got it myself.

I haven't been out to the site - KC's a good 3 hours away from home.

Good luck with Rose Brooks. I've heard Smithville is a good venue.  Doing some open water swims before the race is a great idea.  It's just so completely different than swimming in the pool: people are splashing around you and you have to lift yourself up higher to see the buoys. Let us know how it goes.  I'm sure you'll do great!! Oh yeah...welcome to BT from another KC'er  :-)

Yeah, I'm definitely going to try to do a couple open water swims at Shawnee Mission Park before the race.
This triathlon has an open wave beginning and also staggered starts (one person every 3 seconds, which I'm doing) based on estimated finishing times, so hopefully that will help ease the inevitable traffic jam, but I guess we'll see... Me, I'll probably be at the back the whole time either way- I had no idea how fast (slow) I could swim 500M, when I registered, so I just guessed 15 min. Now that I've actually been swimming I think it might be more like 12 min, but then again, I might be too tired to keep up the freestyle stroke. Still, I figure as long as they go fastest to slowest, I'll never be able to catch up!

But it's ok with me either way... my goal is just to finish! (Ok, my secret goal is to finish in under 1:30:00)

Just for my own info, could anyone tell me if there is a convention out there for how they do these starts when there is both an open wave and time trial starts? Which goes first? and then do they go fastest to slowest in the time trials or the other way around? I think the time trials might also be grouped by age.
Thanks!

Shepherd- thanks for posting the elevation. That's definitely a good thing to know!
I'd never used that mapping site before, but checked out some of my other routes- very cool and useful, too.
