Subject: Gel packets or Gel Flask

which do you prefer and why?

P.S. I have never used a gel flask before. Reason I ask is that my 140.6 race I am doing next month is not going to have gel packets on the course due to the mess they make, but they are going to have gels available  to refill flasks. Now nothing says you can't bring your own gel packets, but I always have trouble ripping them off my bike and not making a mess. So I am lokoing at a flask.

Subject: RE: Gel packets or Gel threads

There is already another thread going on about this.  I assume your race is Redman?

I prefer flasks because I hate tearing off the wrapper and trying to dispose of the trash properly.  I can also dilute the gel down to my liking in the flask.

If I were doing this race, whether I was planning to use a flask or bring my own gels...I'd plan on bringing everything I needed or putting it in special needs.  The idea of trying to refill a flask at an aid station seems a bit gross and a bit silly at the same time.  It's not that hard to bring your own flask and simply swap them out if you need to at special needs.  Or do the same with your own gel packets.

During the race there will be plenty of opportunities to exchange bottles, so I'm thinking about going with the aero bottle and Gatorade bottle and fill up as necessary. What should I do?

I can't get my gel pack out of my back pocket and then get it open to eat! I know this sounds really beginnerish, but what tricks or tools can I use to be able to have my food more accessible?

Energy bars and fluid replacement drinks have their place – and will surely be the subject of future reviews – but there is nothing quite like the immediate lift an energy gel can provide.
