Hi. 24 yr old guy attempting my 2nd Sprint triathlon in FL. I'm moving to Maine in August/September for a couple of years and am looking to compete in a couple of sprints before the end of the season. I'm looking for insight on purchasing a wetsuit...water temps in that part of the US, a new bike for next season...and a near-term goal of completing Olympic-length Tri's. My first race was a rush and I finished in about 1:20:00 [1/4S, 11.5B, 5kR]. Thanks for checking out the post

Welcome!  Good luck in your move to Maine - don't know what the water temps are, but you will very likely need that wetsuit!  Do research first.  See if you can try some on (maybe do that in FL before your move?).  Consider cost, used vs. new, and how many tri's you plan to do.  Get a better suit if you are going to use it a lot.

good luck!

Thanks for replying btw...I'm looking to do between 2 and 4 Tri's before the end of this season...which will mean cold water of course. I'm more prone towards the full suit for bouyancy and warmth...and looking at the mid-price range for Xterra and Ironman.

Do you have any experienece with either suits? or keys for swimming in them?

I just got a Xterra Vortex.  It comes off very easy and I love it!  I have used the Xterra and a QR suit.  And I've used full suits.  The QR suit was great, but I had a hard time getting it off.

And FYI, Ironman restructured their suits in 2003, so if you go used, try to get 2003 or more recent!  (yes I researched this to death before buying - too much money to not look around!)  I have several friends who have Ironman suits and really like them.

Keys for swimming in a suit....bunch up the material around the shoulder area for more mobility.

Good luck - sounds like you definitely need a suit!

Great job on your first tri!  I also got the Xterra Vortex - and love it too.  I tried the next step down and exchanged for the Vortex - it's way worth the extera cost. I figured as long as I'm investing I'd go the extra.
