I decided to buy a P2. But the question is, do I get the P2 with Ultegra or 105 components? Both are on sale at my LBS. The cost is $400 more for Ultegra setup. Thoughts please.

Buy w/ 105 then either buy an Ultegra rear derailleur on eBay and put the saved $300 into new wheels or probably better yet put the entire saved $400 into new wheels. But that's just me.

A bit off base. What other bikes did you test ? I am thinking P-2 or a Felt B16.
Thanks,
Matt

So I bought my first tri bike a few years back. I looked at Felt, QR, and briefly, Specialized, as well as Cervelo. I didn't know how addicted I would get, so I watched my wallet, but got something that fit me well with good components. I decided on the Cervelo P1. Great bike. But now I want to upgrade to a carbon frame. I really like the P1, and was told if the P1 fit well, so would the P2. Now the question, Ultegra or 105. I have Ultegra on the P1, but that was a years ago so... with the trickle down technology, is 105 essentially just as good as my old Ultegra. I have 105 on an even older road bike, and never had an issue (but it doesn't have as nearly as many miles as the tri bike, so an unfair comment).

$400 bucks is a lot. I actually sprung for the Ultegra on my recently-purchased Fuji Altamira but that decision was an easy one to make b/c the Ultegra version had far better wheels. IMO, that should really drive your decision as 105 is fine.

105 is a good group, nothing wrong with it. Just a hair heavier than ultegra. I would put the $400 towards some nice wheels.

Take a closer look what else is different between the two bikes. Commonly cranksets, chains, cassettes, brakes, aerobars are all downgraded to keep the price point more attractive.

I looked at the Cervelo website and from my 2 second look, the 105 has downgraded crankset, chain and cassette and I'm not sure the aero bars are identical to the Ultegra.

In other words, the $400 may be worth it…. if it's only the front and rear derailleur, then, no $400 is way too much of a difference to justify.

The wheels are my first area of concern and I have started to shop around. I find it nauseating to think of spending the same amount for wheels as my bike. Any help?
