Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 530a. Walked and fed dogs. Had normal breakfast of muffin with PB. Left for race just after 6. Parked about a mile away and just biked over to avoid parking issues. When I got there realized it was not that bad.
Event warmup:

Biked to event and then 10 min of light stretching and easy running. Jumped in water before start to swim a little and make sure comfortable with
Swim
  • 18m 39s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

Was never able to get comfortable on the swim. Used my full suit but really should have gone with sleeveless since the water was pretty warm. Then started stressing about being warm. Was my first ocean swim this year which was definitely a mistake. If I can swim more I can get much more relaxed. Being such a short bike and run, you really need to be a good swimmer to place well in this race. My half races later is the year will be more forgiving for a slow swim.
What would you do differently?:

Do more open water practice and swim more in general.
Transition 1
  • 02m 56s
Comments:

Ok transition. HR definitely a bit high post swim and uphill run into transition.
Bike
  • 16m 45s
  • 6 miles
  • 21.49 mile/hr
Comments:

Such a short bike course so just redlined it the whole way. Knew there was a bunch of guys in my AG ahead but never did catch any. Picked off a bunch os <35 guys. Did an ok job of taking the turns and a good job on the one hill. Was able to carry enough speed around the turn and carry into the hill. This got me pass a bunch of people who had to stand to climb
Transition 2
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

was ok but need to get these under 1 min
Run
  • 15m 5s
  • 2 miles
  • 07m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt pretty good the entire time. I had the first mile paced at 7:06 and a little slower with the hill on second at 7:16. My watch had the course just a little bit long, so an extra 44 seconds.

What would you do differently?:

Not much. My running has been pretty good lately.
Post race
Warm down:

light stretching and walked around to check out the action. Ate and drank a little.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need more swim time.

Event comments:

Was scheduled to do this race last year but skipped due to injury. Glad I got a chance to do it since it's such a great little local race. Was shooting for low 50s and finished at 54:48, so not quite. But happy nonetheless. Was good enough for 7th and considering some of the competition in AG that's not too bad. Good early season practice race. Gives me a chance to evaluate weaknesses.

Nice work, not sure what you mean about getting faster in my report thread , you're pretty darn fast. Sure wish I could run like the in that race. Funny about the staggs and Collins connection. Hopefully we do run into each other. Tough AG for sure

This past spring I realized a few of us were heading in the wrong direction physically. We were getting together for poker games and kids’ birthdays, but that was it.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!
