Hello All,

I recently just stumbled upon, and then face-planted into the world of Triathlon. I recently downloaded a book about Triathlon which drew me in. I went to the gym this evening and watched back to back YouTube videos while working out and saw close to two hours fly off of the clock. Not sure why, but it is something that has really grabbed my attention and peaked my desire to train and accomplish something new. I have also already registered to volunteer at an upcoming Triathlon locally to get a first hand impression and build my knowledge around the sport.

My biggest challenge with this is that I am currently not in good shape. I am 6'1", 32, and tip the scale at close to 270 lbs. I was a multi-sport athlete in high school and on swim teams when I was younger so I know that if I can develop the right plan and strategy and I can start chipping away at the weight and put myself in a position to enter a race. As of now however, I am a bit lost on how to get started and a bit intimidated.

Anyways, I am probably going to be visiting this website a lot to absorb all of the great information so I thought I should register and introduce myself.

Cheers,

Dan

Hi Dan -- welcome to the sport. Just making the decision is half the battle. Don't worry about your current fitness or size because one thing you will find quickly is that this sport is filled with people of all shapes and sizes and it is a true judgement free zone.

Start slow and start small and listen to your body. There are some pretty good plans for beginners on here that should be able to help you get started. Work with what you have and I think you will really enjoy it. Because of your background, your swimming should come back to you fairly quickly.

I would set a goal for yourself and sign up for an event -- a sprint or a super sprint is a good place to start with the goal of finishing. It's easier to train and stay focused if you have a little bit of pressure on you to do so.

And if you have questions along the way -- just ask -- there are a ton of people on here that know a bunch about a bunch!

Good luck and enjoy the ride!

Welcome! I started Tris this year as well. I always envied the Tri athletes, but never considered myself as having the right stuff. Spent most of my life in the military and so have a good base fitness, but a year ago I suffered a back injury and really couldn't do much of anything. Went from 220 lbs to 250 in about six months. Apalled at my shape and condition I bought a gym membership last fall and have reached 205 lbs so far. I have already completed two Tris and an obstacle course race this year and am enjoying everyday. I try to run at leat 5 days a week and work in bike rides or trainer work as often as I can, but not nearly as much as I need. I still love it! I swim once or twice a week, and swimming is my strongest event. Would like to get more yardage in, but running and biking are where I need the most improvement. This has been a great forum so far, hope that you find it so as well.

Thanks for the welcome. I was able to volunteer for a triathlon close to home this weekend so that I can learn the ropes of the transition. It will also give me an entry into another triathlon coming up in two months so I am going to set a goal participate in that triathlon.

I quickly browsed an article in Men's Health that talked about doing a triathlon, and how it wasn't really that hard. With a "tsk!" I quickly turned the page while thinking, "Yeah, right!"
