Age Group Rank = 13/83
Pre-race routine:

Watching the Rugby World Cup Final on the big screen in the park at the start! (New Zealand was playing Australia).

  • Event warmup:

Light 10 min jog, 10 min light stretching.
    .
    Run
    • 3h 30m 53s
    • 42.2 kms
    • 05m  min/km
    Comments:

Expected the very tight L) hamstring to rear it's ugly head in the latter stages of the race and cramp up resulting in a walk/run strategy to the end. I had to stop frequently last year n this course for the same hamstring issue and this year it was worse!

However, I closely monitored it over the early stages of the race and didn't push through the hilly first 10 km. The diligence paid off and I actually got to the end with no hamstring cramp and no stops! Much better outcome than anticipated so very pleased.
    .
    What would you do differently?:

    Nothing on the day.
    .
    Post race
    Warm down:

Beer. Massage. Walk back to apartment.
    .

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Cautious approach to managing the L) hamstring. Was not aerobically challenged at any point so need to get to the root cause of this muscular / neuro-muscular issue to perform better.
    .

    Event comments:

Very scenic course and well organised. Flat after the first 10km.

I signed up for Ironman Frankfurt, next year July - and I am very excited about it. I originally planned to run my first Marathon in the middle of September, but am not sure if this is wise.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.

At one of my last swim sessions the week of my first Ironman, one of my training partners told me how she was envious..."your first Ironman is fun, you have no pressure and no expectations!"
