Overcast
Total Time = 1h 28m 19s
Overall Rank = 10/44
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 1/2
Pre-race routine:

Set up transition. Couple of bathroom breaks. Talk with team mates. Stay loose.
Event warmup:

Swim in lake with wetsuit to get used to water temp
Swim
  • 15m 22s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 03s / 100 meters
Comments:

Started off in good rhythm on outside and sited by tracking movement of group to my right. As I neared the buoy and moved towards pack I ran into lots of contact that through off my breathing. After rounding buoy tried to get back into good rhythm and struggled due to poor sighting. Veered off course to left and then overcompensated and hit rope on right.
What would you do differently?:

I think my start was fine, but would have started move towards buoy later as I got closer to keep the good rhythm. On turn back I should have found a better source to help with sighting.
Transition 1
  • 02m 13s
Comments:

I struggled a little bit with my Garmin. Apparently I need to work with it more to figure out how to start it properly in multi sport. It tracked time and distance, but that was it. I fiddled with it a bit in T1, but then gave up. My suit stuck and bottom too getting off.
What would you do differently?:

Do a couple of practice starts with Garmin to make sure it was operating accurately for race mode,
Bike
  • 42m 49s
  • 14.85 miles
  • 20.81 mile/hr
Comments:

I missed the turn around and it cost me 2.45 miles or so and somewhere between 5-7 minutes of time. My bike ranking assumes correct distance at pace i was at.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure anything. There was no volunteer at turn and so that is why I missed it. I guess if I had memorized the bike map before race I might have had a better idea of where it was.
Transition 2
  • 01m 14s
Comments:

I was still pretty heated about missing the turn and so was preoccupied a bit with that during T2, plus my Oakley lens came out of frames when I removed the helmet and so grabbed the lenses and tried to put those back together as I started the run.
What would you do differently?:

Have a second pair of Oakleys in my transition bucket in case lenses come out of frame when taking off helmet.
Run
  • 26m 44s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 21s  min/km
Comments:

I had to walk up a few hills. I was a bit depressed over bike issue and think my run was slower because felt like I was out of race.
What would you do differently?:

Do more nature runs where there are hills to prep for this course
Post race
Warm down:

I didn't do normal post race stretching. I had to leave to do a bike tour, so packed up everything, grabbed some waters and an apple and after a few comments to race director about bike turn issue, headed out.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Missing turn on bike and not getting Garmin working accurately.

Event comments:

Not having a volunteer and bike turn around was a big miss by the race. They apologized afterwards and will correct that for next year. Otherwise well organized race. It is the toughest run course I have encountered in triathlons.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!
