Set Up Events
85F / 29C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 47m 17s
Overall Rank = 10/27
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 1/1
Pre-race routine:

Drove to site and setup TZ. Had shakeology and slice of pizza for breakfast.
Drive was an hour and I was there about 2 hours prior to race start.
Oly start was at 8 and Sprint at 9
Event warmup:

stretch and brief swim
Swim
  • 17m 32s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 20s / 100 meters
Comments:

tight start due to the abundance of sharp rocks. I actually got three cuts on my foot from walking into the water.
What would you do differently?:

I think the water hazards will likely prevent me from doing this race in the future
Transition 1
  • 02m 14s
Comments:

decided I would swim without a shit and wear a bike top with sleeves on the bike and run. I had trouble getting it on and this resulted in one of the slowest Transition times
What would you do differently?:

Will look for a full zip tri top with sleeves. I always get a bad sunburn even with sunscreen
Bike
  • 55m 19s
  • 18.65 miles
  • 20.23 mile/hr
Comments:

nice course. well marked
What would you do differently?:

Decided to try going all out for the bike and see what I would have left for the run. This plan may have worked better on a shorter sprint course. At 30k it was almost a oly distance.
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

Not sure what I was doing for over a minute
Run
  • 31m 2s
  • 5 kms
  • 06m 13s  min/km
Comments:

Run was a bit of a fandango. They changed the course but gave instructions before race where the turn around was. I turned but don't think many other folks did. I was on the second out and back and hadn't seen anyone. I slowed a little and walked for a second as I wasn't sure if I was going the right way. I finally saw the turn around and timing mat and started back. I picked the pace up a little now that I had confidence that I was going the right way. Finally saw some other runners. Two folks appeared in front of me but apparently RD had sent then in do to getting lost in the woods. Turns out a lot of folks got lost, some ran extra, some probably didn't cover the whole 5k. Either way no shade and even in September it was hot
What would you do differently?:

My bike plan backfired and killed my run. But the time trade off was probably pretty even. I think with some confidence I was going the right way I may have gone a little faster. Who knows
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

heat

Event comments:

RD apologized profusely and took responsibility. Apparently a volunteer told people to keep going at the first turn around. I didn't see him, but did see the giant "sprint turn around" sign. RD gave everyone gifts.

Overall good race. The rocks at the swim start will probably prevent me from racing here again. Although its a beautiful site.

nice race t

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.
