Pro 6838 Tejas | Subject: Dog food and cancer in pets Just put our dog down due to aggressive bone cancer. It seems that there is a link between dog food and cancer; provided you believe everything on the web. We fed her a Purina dry food and she loved her Kirkland dog bones. 'Kirkland dog foods + cancer' really pops when searched in Google. So, we've decided to never feed our new pup Kirkland products. How about regular dry dog food brands? Does anyone have a favorite that does not have a bunch f meal sourced from China? Blue, Science Diet? Recommendations? |

Pro 15655 | Subject: RE: Dog food and cancer in pets Our Lab is 11 years old this year. The Vet says she has the eyes, teeth, and build of a 6 year old dog. She is full of energy and got a full hunting season in at 10 years old. We have fed her Taste of the Wild dry food for 9 years and she loves it. It's grain free and there are 4 flavors so we can switch up her food with no digestive issue process. I have not been without at least one dog for over 40 years. I would not feed my dogs anything else at this point. |

Pro 6838 Tejas | Subject: RE: Dog food and cancer in pets Will try to hunt some down and see if she likes it. We made it one week before getting another pup. The house was just not the same and Cat wasn't providing enough entertainment. The wife went to a shelter Saturday and called me to come see this dog. Here's Miss Daisy. Pro 15655 | Subject: RE: Dog food and cancer in pets She's a good looking hound! Congrats! I've always had pure bred retrievers (mostly labs) and was heavily into training and trialing for many years. I know when my current dog, Rainy, leaves us I'll get another, but I'm pretty sure my days of having the time or desire to do advance training, like they need for hunting, are over. I'm seriously considering a dog or two from a shelter.....maybe one that nobody wants. Time to give back for all of the years of pleasure having a dog has given me. My girl....

Pro 6838 Tejas | Subject: RE: Dog food and cancer in pets Wow, she's beautiful. Bright eyes and shiny coat to boot! We've had mutts my entire life and our last three have been from shelters. We thought the dog we just put down was a mutt until we took her to the kennel and the kid working there asked us how we liked our Anatolian Shepard as she was looking into getting one. Sure as shitte, a Google search provided us with images identical to the dog we had! She wasn't the brightest animal, but a very sweet and protective dog. This isn't her actual pic, but a Google image ( I don't seem to have an image of her on this computer). She looked exactly like this dog. Subject: RE: Dog food and cancer in pets Daisy is a great looking dog! I'm another Taste of the Wild buyer. After getting my girl from the shelter, I had a real tough time finding a food that would agree with her digestive system. I was never able to figure out if a particular ingredient was causing issues for her, but TOTW was an instant revelation for some reason. Like LB, I cycle through the different varieties without issue. I don't know where they source the ingredients, but I think the manufacturing is done in the US. |

Pro 6838 Tejas | Subject: RE: Dog food and cancer in pets It's unanimous. I'll get some at Amazon. Mrs mdg just had some Acana and Blue Wilderness delivered today also. Daisy is in for some taste testing! She had a field day this morning as I was packaging the bacon; probably thinks she's hit the shelter pup lottery. |

Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Dog food and cancer in pets DOGS!!! Daisy is one pretty pup! We feed our dogs Fromm food because of the quality ingredients and because of their belief in selling a safe product. They do their own lab testing to be sure there is nothing in there that could make a dog sick/cause a recall (so like e. coli or salmonella, etc) and only then do they ship a batch. Enjoy your new furry pal! |

Aww, those are great looking dogs. I bet those two pretty much dictate terms and conditions around your house! I'll also research Fromms. Thanks Melbo. Edited by mdg2003 2017-05-12 3:44 PM |

Pro 6838 Tejas | Subject: RE: Dog food and cancer in pets I picked up some TOTW today. Put some in her bowl and she went over sniffed it and walked away. I'm thinking "crap!" Then she stopped dead in her tracks, turned and went back to the bowl, sniffed, only to walk away again. And then she went back and wolfed down the entire bowl. I'm not sure what the back and forth was all about but it seems she really liked the food. Thanks all. |

Pro 9391 Omaha, NE | Subject: RE: Dog food and cancer in pets Sorry to hear about your Dog. We exclusively feed our dog Science Diet and it makes a huge difference in her health. We do a lot of fostering for the Humane society and they always provide us Purina food, and it's absolute garbage because of all the nasty fats and crap fillers they put in it. We had a big pet food issue in 2007 (i think) when they had the massive nationwide pet food recall. We had two cats that were on Hills Pet food and both got wiped out bad. They were in intensive care for almost a week being kept alive by machines due to almost complete kidney failure. They managed to keep them alive, but they had to be on expensive kidney food the rest of their lives. Much to my surprise the Hills Pet food company really stepped up to the plate though. They paid 100% of our vet bills and it was almost $10k. They also gave us free pet food for life for both cats with the promise that it wouldn't happen again.

New user 1351 Austin, Texas | Subject: RE: Dog food and cancer in pets I dropped 10k on my cat (effing cancer...), and would gladly drop another 10k on my border collie if she needed it. But they're our kids, so it's all good. Thanks for the recommendation on taste of the wild. I think I'll go pick up a bag today and see how molly likes it. |

Pro 15655 | Subject: RE: Dog food and cancer in pets I don't know how you guys/gals do that. I have friends who have done the same and I can't comprehend it. I've put quite a few dogs down, at all ages, and always understood that there would be another, and another. I was more attached to some than others, but I know that part of what separates us from our animals is that we can end their suffering.....and I will every time. As I said earlier, my latest (and greatest for sure) is 11.......I'm sitting here watching her in the pool with my kids....man I dread the day I know is running up on us. |

Extreme Veteran 861 Northbridge, Massachusetts | Subject: RE: Dog food and cancer in pets It looks like you have made a choice, but if that doesn't work out, you can always look at www.dogfoodadvisors.com and choose 4 star or better. As far as the cancer, there are more and more studies that are linking early spay and neuter to the increase in bone cancer. This is particularly true in large and giant breed dogs. We own Mastiffs and many of the breeders are putting it in contracts that you are advised not to spay or neuter before 2 years. Early spay/neuter is leading to obesity, incontinence (sp), increased bone cancer and increased cruciate tears. If people can't be responsible with their dogs then they should spay/neuter, but if you get a large breed it could be better to wait. Pro 6838 Tejas | Subject: RE: Dog food and cancer in pets Those guys are gorgeous! I imagine they thrive up there with your mild climate and cold winters. I couldn't dream of owning a Mastiff down here in south Texas; as much as I'd love to have one. I've seen them here, but don't think its fair to the animal. Poor guys usually end up getting shaved down for the summer! Interesting to hear about the spay thing. Our previous dog was a rescue animal that got spayed somewhere between 1 and 2 years old, that was best guess for her age. Also, she was a pretty big dog at 93 pounds and a tad overweight. I think her weight was more due to her eating the cat's food every chance she got, along with her own. Could not get the rest of the household to close the laundry room door to keep her out of the cat food! All the area shelters spay the animals before they put them out for adoption, regardless of age. Our new one was already spayed and the shelters don't negotiate on this policy. I agree with their goal of reducing strays and unwanted animals that have to be put down, but think they should allow the adoptee the option. I had always heard to get em fixed at 2 years, whether that is based on science or not, I don't know. It should be up to the owner and their vet to make that decision. We've had Daisy about a month now. She tried the Blue, Acana and Taste of the Wild brands. She seems to love the TOTW and we just got a 30# bag resupply, so we're going with it for now. I've noticed her breath has improved, her coat is taking on a sheen and she's put on 9 pounds since we picked her up. We are having a lot of fun with her and the cat is OK with the new addition so long as the dog understands her 'place' and doesn't cross that line. When she does, it's a fist full of claws to the nose! |

Buttercup 14334 | Subject: RE: Dog food and cancer in pets If you are still looking for options: In the past, I've fed Blue and Wellness to my dog. He is on Fromm's now. They have a number of formulas (grain-free or otherwise) from which to choose. The results are good - healthy coat, no bad breath. He's in great health (knock on wood). Pro 6838 Tejas | Subject: RE: Dog food and cancer in pets That makes it difficult. Good on you for taking care of him properly. My Mom has a dog that has allergies and she tried everything. It's down to her actually cooking chicken and vegetables for her. Of course a little easier than in your case, her pup is a chihuahua! |
