Subject: Flat kit help

Hey all. I used to have a regular flat kit bag on the back of my tri bike. But, recently, I had a fit done, and the adjustments were such that I can't mount the bag anymore. I'm looking for advice on how to carry the flat kit behind the seat. I'm not interested in something that also holds water bottles, but if that's my only option, well, then so be it.

Thank you.

There are some very cheap behind-the-seat bottle cage mounts. It's not the cage. It's just a "T shaped" bit of aluminum with threaded holes that you can mount the cage to. And there's a piece that allows it to clamp to the seat rails.

They're so cheap, you can buy a few of them, assuming you'll mess one or two up.
They're so cheap of cheap quality that you can bend them and manipulate them.

I did have to add a little foam rubber tape to keep it from scraping the seat post. Also, I because I bent one very near the mounting hole, I did have to retap it.

But, then you have two mounting holes. You can put a cage on there and use a little or a big keg. Or anything else that fits those mounting holes, of which, there are lots or bags, boxes, and doohickeys.

Or, if you have a friend with a 3d printer....

What do you consider a "flat kit?"

Tire patch kit?
Replacement tube?
Tire levers?
CO2 cartridges?

Multiples of the above?

What about ID?

Other tools?

For racing?  For training?  Both?

For a while, I had extra bottle cages on my tri-bike and used a bottle as my tool kit.

Assuming you had something before, and now you're seat is lower and there isn't enough space?  Smaller bag?  The underseat bag on my tri bike is about 1/3 the size of what I have on my road bike, but since it's primarily for races, it's OK.

Pics of your setup?

I was able to find a small saddle bag that looped around the seatpost.

I now have a bike that has a built in mount for a box on the back of the frame.

I also used a water bottle before and had two holders on the frame and used one for the kit.

Just takes some creativity.

Good questions. Replacement tube(s), tire levers, CO2 and the little inflater thing. No puncture kit.

I wear a Road ID, so no need for that space. I don't carry other tools. This is on my tri bike, so it's primarily for racing, but also for some training (all of my riding for the next two months will be on this bike).

My seat went up and it went forward. I used to have just enough space for my saddle bag to hook on the seat rails, but now it's too far forward. The saddle bag is already pretty small.

The only pics I've got are from my fit last week, and I doubt they'll show a lot. Let me know if you want to see it, though, and I'll attach the report.

I had the same problem and had a bottle cage mounted back there. It was a two-bottle cage, but I had them rotate it and remove one of the cages. So now I have one bottle cage, to which I strap my toolbag. It sticks back and up a little.
The only trouble I've had is that when I do a flying dismount, my thigh hits the toolbag and I feel like I'm stuck and can't dismount. I usually forget it's back there and in the heat of a race, I don't understand what's happening. I haven't crashed yet, though. :-)

I managed to get most of a flat kit into an X-lab Stealth Pocket 200. https://www.xlab-usa.com/stealth-pocket-200xp.html

By most, I mean a tube, a CO2 cartridge, 2 tire levers, a tire boot patch, and the smallest C02 inflator nozzle I could find. It's tight, but it all fits. I couldn't get the third tire lever in, but can only remember a couple times when I ever used more than two, and I probably could have managed with two if that's all I had. Also, I taped the foam insulator for the CO2 cartridge under the saddle rails, because it was too tight with it on the cartridge.

If you don't have the mounting bosses on your top tube, the Stealth Pocket 100 is essentially the same thing with velcro straps. https://www.xlab-usa.com/stealth-pocket-100.html

I also use one similar to the X-Lab storage unit. Here's a link to see what it looks like, mounts to the frame just behind your handlebars.

I like this idea. I had ordered the X-Lab Delta 105 with multi-strike repair holder. I liked the idea of having my tube, levers, CO2 back there, and I could put my saddle bag with phone in the cage (or, if a longer ride, another bottle). Unfortunately, my seat is so far forward that there is not enough clearance between the seat post and the bottom of the cage. The pocket might be a good solution. Thanks.
