Subject: Voting age to 16? Dems are in need of votes and are floating the idea of lowering the voting age to 16.
First off, I don't think there are many 16 yo kids who give rip about politics or voting. They are much more interested in who to vote for Homecoming queen than what congressional candidate to vote for. But maybe the thinking is, liberal parents would be more likely than conservative parents to drag their kids to the polls and tell them how to vote. Or maybe the thinking is simply that kids are naturally naïve and think socialist idea sound good to them. Sure, why shouldn't everyone have free health care and free college and guaranteed income.
Playing devil's advocate.....I started working when I was 15. I worked 30 to 40 hrs a week all through HS. I paid SS, Federal and State income taxes. Yet I was lot allowed to vote. Isn't this taxation without representation? Didn't we already fight this war? ;- )
I think what this comes down to is where do we draw the line? If 16 is ok, how about 15? 13? The age of 18 is an age of transition. We graduate HS, go off to college, join the military, move out of the house and get a job, are able to get a credit card, rent a car, etc. I see no compelling reason to change the voting age. |
