There is no such thing as a mandatory evacuation. The gubment has no authority to make you leave your home without any due process. Might be prudent to leave but not “required”.

Some times I am a civil librarian. Or maybe I just resent govment, who works for us, telling us what we have to do. Certainly if you decided not to evacuate you should expect zero help from the gubment but I never have trusted on the gubment to keep me alive. I can take care of myself and my family.

We evacuated for Floyd seems like a very long time ago came back after 1 night in a red cross shelter quite the experience that was. I hope this one does just what Floyd did.

I agree that "mandatory evacuations" are unenforceable, and I agree that you should be prepared, as best you can, to take care of your family and yourself.  That being said, once that order is given, you may truly find yourself alone if it all goes to hell.  I've worked a number of security details, after natural disasters, protecting power company's equipment and people.....and I've seen quite a few otherwise strong people reduced to helpless wrecks when that thing they didn't count on hits them in the face, and there are no resources available to help them.  It's a personal call but should not be taken lightly......the reason those orders are given is basically to grant immunity to govt. agencies (police, fire, EMS, etc) who MAY NOT (read -  likely will not) be coming to your aid just because you call.  As long as you get that part, by all means, carry on!

There is a massive amount of safety and security manpower being sent to the East coast today and tomorrow.  This response is greater than anything I've seen in 32 years.

Totally agree one should not expect help if they stayed after ordered to evacuate. But life is all about risk assessment as we are free to make these calls ourselves. Riding a motorcycle is inherently dangerous but millions of people accept that risk...and thousands die every year. Every house and property is different so to put a blanket evacuation for large areas seems a bit over the top. If I have a two story concrete condo near the coast I probably stay. Sock up on food and water and hope for the best.

Having said that, I would never put my family in harm’s way and would err on the side of caution for them.

Actually, there is a legal definition of mandatory evacuations. By declaring a mandatory evacuation, local and state govt entities are triggered to do things like limit traffic into an area under mandatory evacuation (prevent looting, limit public and safety resources) and redirect the flow of traffic to facilitate massive outflow of traffic. It''s not about dragging you and your family out of your house.

Yeah, because they can't......and they also won't respond to an emergency if it's not safe (read- during the storm)  You will wait hours or days.  I've been to 4 "mandatory evacuation" areas on security missions over the years.  I just sent 2 men to this one.....the "rules of engagement", for lack of a better term,  have never changed.

Personally, I never cared who left or who stayed.....it's your life.....it doesn't change anything for the rescue/security folks. \

AND.....it also relieves govt. entities of any liability with regard to not responding.
