San Dimas, California

Tri Events
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 32m 12s
Overall Rank = 38/142
Age Group = M 55-59
Age Group Rank = 5/14
Pre-race routine:

Nothing special.
Event warmup:

Just a little swim before the start.
Swim
  • 32m 27s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 59s / 100 yards
Comments:

Race tried rolling start with self-seeding for the first time. I'm in favor of that.

Other than course being VERY long, this was a pleasant and pretty representative OW swim for me.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Time was bad on paper, but course was long without a doubt. I placed in about the top 1/4 overall (in a strong field) which is good.
Transition 1
  • 03m 12s
Comments:

Not a bad T1, but time was surprisingly long. I did set myself up to have the longest possible run to the bike out.
What would you do differently?:

T1 is always an epic event for me with socks and all.
Bike
  • 1h 10m 38s
  • 21.5 miles
  • 18.26 mile/hr
Comments:

I got passed more than I would have liked and avg speed was less than target. I didn't really push this, though: Was getting some early signals of hamstring cramping.
What would you do differently?:

Could have opened up on the downhills more, honestly. And pushed a little harder overall.
Transition 2
  • 01m 33s
Comments:

Had a hard time getting into left shoe.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure why left shoe was stubborn...otherwise, this was fine.
Run
  • 44m 20s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

Wasn't sure how this would go after racing a 5K yesterday, but I hung in there. Course was very short, so my sub-44:30 time is misleading, but I would have been right around 45 mins if the course had been 6.2 and that was what I was looking for, really.
What would you do differently?:

Ideally, don't race a 5K the day before....
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around. Packed up.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

A bit out of shape after rehabbing lower back much of August and September. I feel like my bike performance should be better than it was today and in the half iron at Malibu last month.

Event comments:

14th year for this "championship"/"express" combo. They've added an aquabike and a duathlon recently. There's a 5k/10k and a parent/child division in the tri. Tri-Events has been putting on "grass roots" style tri's at Bonelli Park for years and I always enjoy them.

Solid race - especially that run. I wish I could find a race where the swim is too long

San Dimas is my hometown but I didn't start triathlons until I was 42 here in Kansas but I'd like to do a race at Bonelli one of these years. What was overall swim quality and how was the bike course?

If this race is around same time period next year I may put it on the schedule.

This October race at Bonelli was actually my 2nd ever tri back in 2007 and I believe this was its 14th year. There's always a sprint and Oly in mid-October. The same promoter puts on a three race series in the spring at Bonelli, usually March/April/May (same format...sprint and Oly each month). Some people don't like the swim venue because it is used for boating and is relatively small and shallow so there's a bit of motor oil in the mix, but I like it. It's sheltered by the hills surrounding it, so it's almost always calm and fairly warm. Bike is either 1 or 3 seven-mile loops around the park and is very rolling with a lot of poor pavement, especially in the last couple miles of the loop. I like racing there...all of the Tri Events races (LA Tri Series in the spring and the Legends Tri in October) are very much "grass roots" style but well organized and supported and attract some really strong competitors. There's also the "Turkey Tri" (a long sprint) in mid-November at Bonelli, which is a different race organization, but a very good race.
