Elite Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() i did my first "intense" brick of today, which included intense spinning in spinning class followed by a thirty min. tempo run. mind you, this was my first spinning class and although i consider myself in good aerobic shape at the moment, at times, the damn spinning machine had my hr off the wall! i'm now understanding of what a great workout it is...and yet, following the class where i immediately went over to the treadmill and began running, my back in the upper region began cramping...i was def. in pain however in a moment where i tried clearing my mind, i remembered a quote the great Karen Smeyers said in Ironman Hawaii 2002, "everybody, whether they are professional or just someone trying to finish, hits a point..where you begin to question yourself out there...you begin to doubt yourself..but often times, if you hang in there, you can bounce back." so, i accepted how i felt instead of dwelling on it, and just continued to run..and worked through it. i know i'm not the only one out there that has a difficult workout every once in awhile. it's just nice to know, that we all understand. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Needing some inspiration. Had an overwhelmingly great run last Wednesday....and haven't gotten back onto schedule since. I don't know if I will ever be able to repeat what I did then. My husband, who is the runner, was floored. Now I am hesitant to go work out...just got tired. I have lost the "desire" to stay with my schedule. I know it will pass, just hoping it will do so quickly. Any suggestions? :-( Vanessa |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Could you make your off time so fun/indulgent that you would have to get back training? Your logs look like you push pretty hard. |
![]() ![]() |
Elite Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() cut back your training, what you're experiencing sounds quite similar to the first stages of overtraining. you should look FORWARD to training, not hesistant about it. |
![]() ![]() |
Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ok, dorky question time, but when do you KNOW that it's time to go back? I just read the "overtraining" thread and was amazed that I could check off all of the points that one of you made about total insomia, wired and weird (my addition!). I haven't slept in about 5 days all the way through the night. I am highly irritable and feel stretched about rice paper thin - :-( YUCK! Just curious about input. Thanks for the information so far. And big thanks to Ron for making this exchange available. Vanessa |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Vanessa, I haven't experienced this or have any great info, but is there other high stress things going on in your life? If you haven't trained in a week, then over training isn't still your problem. You will just have to force yourself to start back up, but do some easy workouts. When I first started running, I would try to beat my time each workout. I soon came to dread them. When I learned that most of my workouts should be easy (relatively), it made it much easier to train and enjoyable. I even look forward to the hard workouts (currently just 1 run and 1 bike per week). And by hard, I don't mean race pace, just harder effort. MAke an effort to go for a very easy run or bike and get yourself started again. |

Resident Matriarch ![]() | ![]() Vanessa, at the moment I have more family stress in my life than I'd like to deal with. (see ranting post about daughter!) So after many weeks of no sleep or very poor sleep, I went to my doctor and asked for help. She gave me an Rx and I only take it if it's absolutely necessary but have been sleeping like a baby when I do. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for all of the input and support. I got back on the treadmill today, after a 15 minute abs class and just told myself to run...no specifics, no requirements...run until I felt done. I am working on a Ph.D. in Chemistry which does create stress (both good and bad - I mean I want to be here or I wouldn't, but it is still hard) and I have had some trouble with a professor (personality clash), unfortunately, he "outranks" me. Being the rather stiffed neck variety of person (stubborness on a good day equals persistance - required for any endeavor ;-) ), I haven't really "let go". I had a talk with a trusted friend today and the run went very naturally after that. I will talk to the doctor about stressed out and no sleep kind of stuff and see what he says...it's been going on long enough. I really appreciate that people read these posts and respond. I do try to do the same, even if it is just to say "glad you are here"! Thanks again, Vanessa |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() great job with the run. I find that training can be a great stress reliever when not over done. Try just doing that same technique with runs and bike for a week or two until you feel better and it may just help relieve some stress. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ron, My bachelor's was in Biochem, but I am going for Analytical (anal) chem for the Ph.D. I am just getting started....worked a lot between this one and the last, so I am the "old lady" graduate student. The thing that surprises me is that these very young, vigorous students I attend classes with, et cetera, are jaw drop amazed that I have done (and am still hoping to do) triathlons! ![]() Why do you ask? Thanks a million for this site. I never knew how cool an online community could be! Vanessa |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() analytical chemisty...sweet. i asked cuz i am doing my masters in polymer chemistry...2/3 done, almost ready to work on my thesis. before my current job doing organic/polymer chemistry, i worked as an analytical chemist for a tire company...u know, ran Tga's, gc's, IR's mass specs, nmr's, atomic absorbtion...all that stuff...plus a lot of sample prep before that job for an environmental firm...whats funny is my first chemistry job i was sample prep for the gc-ms lab for soil/groundwater and ALL I DID was methylene chloride extractions...i shook A LOT of sep funnels!...manged to explode a few when i didn't vent the pressure...ahhh...memories... anyways, how far r u along and what school? need any help, u know where to find me. |

Resident Matriarch ![]() | ![]() LMAO! OMG, I have no idea what he said either and am glad I'm not the only one! But I read every word of both of their posts hoping some of that smarts will find it's way to me. Oh my..... |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Prior to returning to school, I worked in cancer research - specifically antibody mapping (X-ray crystallography). I also got the thrill of running loads of elisas, all the little blot tests (western, et cetera), electrophoresis, LC and HPLC. Being a biochemist, analytical chemists typically cringed when I got near the "instrument" - mucking stuff up with those messy proteins and what not!! ![]() Polymer chemistry...so, are you a "syn jock"? Tell me about your thesis - I swear I won't snore and I might grasp a little of it!! As of yet, I am attempting to understand circuitry - Instrumentation class has me in fits. HATED the electricity portion of physics and now, it's coming back for it's revenge!! I may have some questions, when I get a little further into the understanding portion...my main one right now is "what was I thinking?" :-O So cool to find other wild and crazy science folks that like triathlon - maybe we'll meet at a conference or an event - how wild! I am afraid I will be the one with the dazed look asking "what was that middle part, again, between the 'good morning' and the 'any questions'"! Vanessa |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() hey...isnt that what u bio people r doing now? especially since the sequencing of the genome? shooting big ole proteins through mass specs? hehe...what in the world do u have to know circuitry for? u have a problem, u call up and 'come in here and fix my #$%$%$ machine!' regardless, i know little about runinng lc and hplc...have this ancient hplc in my lab that is still kicking..it usually has more problems than not...a swift kick usually gets it going again...i will get u on the horn to help me out with my hplc questions. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() HPLC's are so similar to Italian sports cars - oh so cool, expensive and when they are running, they do things that no other piece of machinery can. However, most of the time they are the most expensive paperweight anyone could own ;-) ! I have a mechanical inclination and the PI was very frustrated and broke, so I took the parts kit and tore the thing apart and got it up and running again...I have repeated this scenario several times, although percussive maintenance and a lot (A LOT) of swearing becomes a very real option...the swearing usually does take place. To date, I haven't thrown the machine down a flight of stairs... Circuitry is required, I suppose because someday I will be the professor on a Gilligan's Island type of situation and I will be able to build a radio out of two coconuts, some monkey dung and a palm frond or something ![]() As for MS stuff, I've only seen the big black box sitting in the back of someone's lab going "ping". To shoot what I am working on would require "modification", as the temps required for MS analysis would caramelize the components inside the machine and piss some poor tech off who had to tear into said machine for cleaning because the PI was frustrated and broke... Viscious cycle, this stuff! Vanessa |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() haha...the old gc lab i worked at...ALL the machines were naked...no panels...just guts everywhere as they frequently got outa calibration and required 'getting inside to the goodies' as new calibrations and standard rarely get it back into spec.... hey...if u ever want to know about the best lab idea ever...let me know..i have spent lots of time working on the idea and the other girl i work with is less skeptical about it now... "The Lab Butler" - no talking by them, he/she does all your glassware cleaning, instrament running, maintenance, lab cleanup, ordering supplies, sending samples to get analyzed...so on. COOL HUH? your laughing aren't u? i just need to convince upper management of the funds...that would save us sooo much time!!!! we would be more free to...surf the web, take breaks, go home early etc, etc. r u in? i will set up a web page to get this going...www.thelabbutler.com |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Okaaaaaaaay, Ron and Vmax, you had me at hello....then I felt like I was in a Snoopy cartoon where the teacher goes "blah blah blah blah blah blah blah" meaning it was waaaay over my head, but I can definitely relate to having someone to mind meld with who does the same thing you do so for that aspect it was fun to read. ![]() Unfortunately, about the only things I can relate to people with are who makes a good microbrew, why Sonoma County wines are oh so much better than snooty Napa Valley wines, what's your favorite Seinfeld or Friends episode, and if I was the only one that thought Dave was a total tool on Paradise Hotel this summer. ![]() The final purpose of the post was to thank Trilover for the initial thread. That story helped me in knowing that others go thru those moments of doubts when I'm in the middle of a ride, run or swim, ready to die, hating everyone, everything, every sport and every limb on my body and trying to figure out why I think I can actually accomplish anything. So, thanks. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey crpadiem, Sorry for the chemistry regression/digression! Doubts...I have a ton. Today on my ride (with a local bike club), we went 44 miles. Around the 30 mile mark, I began to wonder if the cramp in my back was going to take me down and I was going to have to be sagged out(oh god the humiliation, the shame, the pain...). It was one of those times when all I can say to myself is "stay on the bike, just stay on the bike...." I probably should have directly emailed Ron with the insane chem stuff! Loved your post, though. I feel like I am in the peanuts cartoon as well when I am in class ![]() Oh, I think my favorite episode of Friends would have to be the one where the girls learned to play poker!! Later, Vanessa |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Oh my goodness....don't apologize...my post was all in fun and jest.....you guys are obviously both passionate about your work...it showed....I enjoyed it and couldn't help teasing. And my fav friends episode was probably the lobster one....when Phoebe says, "he's her lobbbbbster" On a klutzier note I remember a 50 mile road ride with a friend. Pulling to a slow at an intersection stop light after mile 35 I was trying to do the cool, unclip out of the right pedal while coasting slowly to the light and hoping to god it turns green before i have to stop thingie when I lost balance and basically fell completely off my bike in front of an intersection of traffic. Ohhhhhh, yeah, laying there in my too cool bike clothes in a heap on the ground as cars start thru the intersection was a true moment of shame and humiliation. nt Edited by crpadiem 2004-01-25 4:39 PM |
