Subject: Swimming drills--training suggestions?

Can anyone suggest drills to do for a newbie? I mean I get in there and swim but just do my own thing basically. I use fins, buoy, paddles and dont know how many sets of each I should do or to add speed drills or to what...

I would like to build stamina and speed and since I'm a chick, can use upper body strengthening to help with propulsion.

Any suggestions?

I answered a questions like this in a similiar post, try this:

You can build in drills into the 'minutes' given in the plan via Total Immersion or some of the articles here: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/index.asp?catid=19   just pick a short and/or medium swim workout to focus on some concepts and use a little bit of the long workout to re-enforce them at the beginning and finish with some long sets.

Kevnin Koskella has several 'lessons' that you can build-into a workout:

Or look at gsmacleod's series:

Although more of a general article on swimming ideas, Triathlete In Training: Journal Entry #4, focuses on making sure you only work on one or two concepts per session...maybe every week pick one of the drills in the Kevin Koskella articles to work on...once you have improved, the next week focus on a new drill but make the prior drills part of your 'warmup' sets...
