Subject: Open Water Swim Sunday May 20 Hillsdale Lake 4 pmSome of us are planning a Sunday May 20 open water (sortof) swim at Hillsdale lake at 3:30 - 4 pm. Dont know how long we will be there; probably until the last person gets tired. If you want to ride with me from the Switzer/127th area drop me a pm. Otherwise the cost is $4.00 a car, payable at the self-service kiosk at the entrance to the state park. Caution: there are 2 beaches; you do not want the Windsurfer Beach. Here are my notes on the lake I sent to other BTers. I went out to Hillsdale lake, talked to the rangers then went out to the beach area. Here is what I found: There is a nice sandy beach with beach house we can use from dawn to dusk 7 days a week The sandy beach is currently submerged due to all the rains but is usuable; it's just a little deeper and sandier on the bottom. The beach area is cordoned off by a continuous bouy line that is currently out about 75-100 feet from shore. The line extends across the mouth of the bay-beach for 100-150 yards. Beyond the solid buoy there are some more single buoys warning boats off the area. My recommendation would be to do laps following the outside of the continuous buoy line and returning back following the inside of the buoy line. This would give the swimmer something to hold onto either to the left or right in case of difficulty and give you about a 300 yard lap. I am not sure how deep it is out at the buoy but I suspect about up to ones chin in normal conditions, a little deeper now. The season is open there now so you could swim this weekend after work, etc. The cost is $4 a car unless we buy a season pass for 1 vehicle at 24. It's about a 30 minute drive out there from my house I can take 4 people from my house in the 127th Switzer area. I think I already have Veganman and LindaKc. so I still have space for 2 mor.
I checked with Shawnee Mission Park and Kill Creek park and their swimming areas dont open until June 2. I'm thinking do Hillsdale for the Heritage tri then move to SM when it opens. |
