Subject: First century - a few questions
I rode 100+ mile bike ride this morning.  I felt surprisingly good for most of the ride.  I had borrowed my buddy's Garmin GPS so I have lots of stats from the ride.  I've not downloaded the ride yet to get the elevation profile yet but that's the main reason I wanted the GPS so I can compare the elevation of this route to the IMKY route.
Total Time: 6:21:05
One break at convenience store to refill bottles: 4:46

Bike Computer
Distance: 103.22 miles
Average speed: 16.73 mph
Max speed:  29.4 mph  (so obviously no monster hills - up or down)

Garmin
Distance: 101.47 miles
Average speed: 16.3 mph
Max speed:  39.8 mph (strange - I'm guessing it lost satellite coverage or something)

Starting weight: 258
Ending weight: 252

Fuel:  Cliff bar or power bar on the hour - 5 bars ~ 1250 calories + two bottles of Gatorade ~ 300 calories
3 Bottle of water

I have a couple of questions:

1.  I stayed in the big chain ring for the first 71 miles as the cadence and resistance felt comfortable.  After that I was getting tired and used the small chain ring as necessary on the hills.  Are there strategies on using the small chain ring?

2.  About the only thing that got really uncomfortable was my butt.  Any suggestion?

3.  Twice I threw the chain off the rear cassette into the spokes from over shifting.  This only happens when I was in the small chain ring and never in the large chain ring.  Is this common or do I need to adjust something?

4.  Should I trust the Garmin and fudge the wheel diameter on my bike computer?  Any suggestions on how much to fudge for the delta indicated above?

  1. Big chainring, little chainring, I can't think of anything more irrelevant. Find the cadence that you're most important at, and ride the gear at that cadence that results in the effort/HR that you're targeting for your training session or race.
  2. Yeah, ride lots. Your butt will build tolerance. Also make sure you wear proper shorts, and use Body Glide or chamois creme as needed.
  3. Shouldn't happen at all. Take into your LBS for adjustment.
  4. Not so sure a <2% margin of error on a single ride is much reason for concer. Maybe do a rollout measurement on your tire to verify that the setting on your bike compute is accurate.

The Bear covered it,

Tweaking the rear derailuer is not that big a deal.

Rule of thumb is you should never experience that in the Big Ring because you don't want to "cross over" that much. Based on the gear ratios, you should probably shift down from the big ring to the little in the "3rd" or "4th" gear.

BTW nice work on reducing your starting weight over the last couple of weeks.
