I did it! I actually found a pool to do laps. It's actually right around the corner from me on the Coast Guard base. That is also a plus because it's free for all us Marines here at our unit. I finished my first workout a couple days ago. I wanted to see how far I could swim. I made it 200m and had to stop. I was tired. Knowing that it was my poor form that made me wear out so fast, I did 4X50's with rests between. I figured that if I took it slow that I could consentrate on my form and mabe learn something from the first workout. I got more confident being in the water and kept myself rested enough so I knew I could make it through the 50 meters without too much struggle.

I'm looking forward to my second pool workout today. I hope it's true what they say about improving fast at the beginning. My boss is a former competitive swimmer and I hope to recruit him to the pool with me. I am talking to him about coaching. And of course the other bonus of having a training partner. Good for the both of us, you know.

Sweet! I hope your right, and I'll do my best to Tri. I'm way too competitive to do anything slow.

Welcome.  Everything I've read on swimming says that it's all about form, technique and efficiency, as opposed to brute strength.  I've been swim training a couple times a week for about 2 months and have reduced my stroke count to about 24 for 50 m.  So, yes swimming efficiency does improve fast.

if for any reason you get transfered to san diego or if you are sent here for training.. the fleet pool at 32nd street naval station is a 50M pool

happy training

And the pool on the "Dry Side" is also 50m, but it's outdoors

The swimming is super hard in the beginning and then it just seems to start working. Just this past week I feel real comfortable in the water with a consitant stroke and breathing cadence. I'm no expert but here are somethings that have helped me.

-slow it down in the beginning. Try to get a consistant stroke and breathing pattern. As slow as possible worked for me
-cup your hands in the water
-make sure you exhale when you head is under water so you can inhale the whole time your face comes out
-when bringing your head out keep your chin close to your shoulder
- a long high stroke lets me take a deeper breath

2 weeks ago I couldn't do 250 meters without a break. Yesterday I did 1500 straight. It was all about the breathing pattern for me.

Hey, thanks everybody. I will try some of these tips today!
One tip I got from a friend is to spit in your goggles so they don't fog up. Anyone else do that?

well done keep it up, I am a newbie and I am doing the slow steady approach, I am such a land lubber now it takes all my energy to work on my breathing, and focus on my form... 99.9999% of my swim work out that is...It is such a challenge that it is fun...
