When I was 14 I competed in a triathlon with my dad. I think that was before most people had even heard of tris (I'm now 34). It was really sweet because we crossed the finish line hand-in-hand. Anyway, I kind of got out of a lot of the activities that I used to participate in when I started college and never really got back in to them. So, here I am, not quite starting from scratch, but I feel pretty close to it. I'm very excited to be getting back in to the swing of things, so to speak, and I've been cruising this sight and finding great information through it. I look forward to posting more and reading others' posts.

Chris

Hey Chris,

Welcome, I came across this site through a friend at work, it's been really useful for me,. This will be my first year of triathlons, the forums have really taught me a great deal and I've also come to find the training log priceless, I really recommend using it if you don't have some other training log in progress.
I have always just decided on the day what I would do and keep no track things, it's taken a while to get serious enough to log my workouts, but now I log everything, even take a notebook to the gym (used to think the people who did that were real tri-hards).

Hope you enjoy this site as much as I have and good luck with the training.

My goals are pretty simple. I should start by saying that I competed in a triathlon with a friend of mine on a whim last May. I didn't train for it, and thank goodness it was a sprint distance, because I thought I was going to die at a couple of points during the race. I finished in just over 3 hours in 3rd to last place. Having said that, I really was just glad to finish. So, I've signed up for another tri that will take place in 2 months. I've been training off and on, but since I sent my entry fee, I've been training much more consistently. My goal is to finish this sprint tri in about 2 hours. This one is going to be 825 swim, 12 m bike, and 3 m run. I think this is a reachable goal because my swim time should be around 18 minutes, I think I can do the bike in about an hour, and if I can run about 12 minute miles, that will put me in the right time range. Of course, I haven't calculated for transition time - that's why I say about 2 hours. Running is definitely the hardest part for me (as you can see if you look at my training logs that I just started). I'm very slow at it and it's not something that I particularly enjoy, so I'm in the process of changing my attitude about it.

Great to have you on the site chris. Running seems to be a lot of peoples troubles, but as long as we keep working on it we will get better.

If you take it easy when you run to begin with, don't push yourself too hard (using a treadmill can be good for this) and keep your HR in the lower intensity zones of you lactate threshold at first and steadily build, you may find running becomes more enjoyable over time. Many people push themselves too hard and then get put off running because it's so painful for them and they expect so much. Small increments at first worked for me.

Good to hear you have a goal, training with a purpose is easier when it comes to those 'I want to quit' moments.

Good luck.

Great goals! It is great to have specific goals. Makes it much easier to train for. Take the running slow as mentioed above. But add walk breaks! Depending on where you are at now, start with run 1 min, walk 1 min and slowly increase the run time. This will allow you to increase your distance without feeling so bad. This will help you to recover faster and you won't dread the runs so much! I hated running before last May. I now love it. If every run is hard, you will dread it.
