Comments: My plan was to ride straight through until the mid-way point, then stop for lunch before riding to the end. Overall I was hoping to average 15-16 mph. But, before getting to the mid-way point I ran out of water, so I stopped quickly around mile 34 to refill. That was not the lunch stop, though, so I stopped again around mile 50 to eat. By then I was feeling tired because I had been averaging 17-18 mph, so I decided to take it easier for the rest of the day. I stopped at the remaining rest stops, and focused on getting my average HR down. Unfortunately, along the way I missed a turn and got lost, which added 2-3 miles to my distance and added to my stress level a bit. What would you do differently?: Work harder at keeping my average speed lower and on target, so that I can do a "negative split" for each day and for the weekend. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Got to the overnight location in Newport (Salve Regina University), dropped off the bike, found my luggage, threw on my running shoes, and went out for a quick run. But, my lower back started hurting as soon as I started running, so I called it quits after 5 minutes. Last updated: 2007-03-28 12:00 AM

Had my alarm set for 4am, but I hit snooze a few times and got up around 4:20. Thankfully, I had finished packing and set everything out the night before, so it only took me 20 minutes to get ready and leave. I arrived in Cranston around 6:15 and signed in. Finished getting ready for the ride, then brought my overnight bag over to the luggage truck. While I was waiting I noticed that there was a tent set up by a local bike shop for mechanical assistance, so I brought my bike over to get a quick check of the derailleurs. Since I swapped out my shifters for bar-ends, I had not had it professionally tuned, but the mechanic said that everything was in perfect order. Hung out with some guys from my company's team and waited for the start.
Since this was a ride and not a race, I chose not to warm up beforehand. The first few miles were slow as the group spread out, so that served as a warmup itself.
