Subject: Knee'd help
I have completed on Tri todate (a beginners tri consisting of: 200yd swim, 10mile ride, 2mile run). I truly enjoyed it but I have one problem, a sore knee while training. I have seen an Ortho Specialist and nothing has shown up on the test. His suggestion is to go in and take a look and maybe clean up if anything is found. The pain is not debilitating and usually wears off about 1/4 mile into running but returns an hour or so after training(training) Aleve solves the problem but Doc doesn't seem to like that idea. I have pretty well had this same problem for about 4 years but have managed so far. I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience and what did they do about it.

Should I get the Scope done? I am pretty heavy at 230lbs 5'11". However the problem was there when I was 200lbs so I don't believe the weight is the whole issue. It is not Illiotibial Band (that's the other knee that can be stretched into behaving). I want to continue with the Tri's but I dread getting out and running because of the pain. I also have new shoes New Balance 715's.

Any suggestion on how to procede, training through ideas or options would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

I was wondering about my shoes. I have pretty well worn New Balance for quite some time. I have also noticed that a couple of pairs of shoes I wear for everyday activities have shown excessive wear on the outside edges.

Any suggestions on a brand that is designed for overpronators.

Chris,

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately even in a city the size of mine, none of the footwear stores are equiped to test any kind of running styles or look for potential problems. I will check the site and see what I can dig up. Thanks for the help!

What ever you do dont buy cheep ! Asics are great for your problem. I to have the same problem. Point to note, I do a lot of running with work, it does take time to warm up, even after stretching. Also try to train on grass rather than the road. I train half the time running around football ovals, or cross country. The impact is far less.

I appreciate all of the advice. I am going to try adding some more stretching to my routine and look for a more stable cushioning shoe. I do appreciate all of the advice.

Having a knee issue myself I feel your pain and frustration.  Some physical therapists are able to identify any gait issues that may be contributing to the pain in your knees. That is are you overpronating etc. I am a huge fan of PT and would try them first before an exploratory surgery. Did you have a MRI? Good luck!

Here we go  !
Only my experience--60 y/o out of shape ex-----  sound familiar with most of overweight and out of shape friends

My knee diag is "DJD"  degenerative joint desease a number of issued rolled into one Don't discount this and be too quick for a "fix"--miniiscus,etc.

Age
prior athletic wear and tear
Arthritic
And most importantly as explained to me a lack and deteriation and lack of flexibilityof both the hip ,pelvic and glutes leaving the knee the only shock absorber left !!!!!

Again only my two cents worth but when I began to strengther, stretch and condition my hips and glutes increase range of motion and do some gradual suplinatioon (sp) of the knee I not only felt my knee was beter but my overall balance and flexibility increased

Please before we get to critical of my response understand it was done at the diag of both MD and DPT

While it may work for me it is something to put in your "memory bank":
