Pre-race routine:

I will call this triathlon a learning experience as I made many mistakes that cost me time and energy. I am glade to have made them though so that I can easily improve time for future races.

Went to bed the night before at 10 but could not fall asleep until 11. At 3 I woke up to my lungs being completely locked up with asthma and did not get it cleared up and back to sleep until 4. Woke up 6, got dressed and ate some steel cut oatmeal with dried cranberries. Left my dad's cabin at 6:30, arrived at the event at 6:50. Got set up and went down to the beach.
Event warmup:

First mistake, I didn't warm up, socializing seemed more fun.
Swim
  • 14m 29s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 39s / 100 yards
Comments:

I didnt know that I would be in the last wave out and realized that I ate my breakfast to early as my stomach was growling just before the swim. I also forgot to eat my powerbar before I came down to the beach from the transition area.

Here was my first big mistake/learning experience. I was too excited when the horn blew and completely forgot about form at first. for the first 150 yards I worked to hard, even though I swam slow and was too tired to spot so I went 40 degrees off course from the bouy. At this point I finially calmed down, concetrated on my form, caught my breath and started sighting the bouy. Seeing that i was way off course and 75 yards to the right of the group, I stayed calm and swam/sighted perfect from there to the turn around. At the turn around, I noticed that I rounded the bouy with they guy that was next to me at the start and was about in the middle of the pack. From the turn around bouy to the final beach bouy I swam fast and straight and made up a lot of lost time passing many swimmers.
Then, I made my bigest mistake. I stood up way to early in waist deep water and ran in for 30 yards. This was the worst thing I could do. Not only was it slower, but it required a huge amount of energy and really tired out my legs.
What would you do differently?:

Eat properly.

Stay calm at the start. Swim focusing on form and sighting properly.
Swim up to the beach until my hand touches the bottom and maybe even learn that "dolphin diving" technique to maintain speed and conserve energy.
Transition 1
  • 04m 9s
Comments:

4 minutes is embarrassing. My Olympic race last year had a 2 minute T1 time.
I think the extra time came from being exausted from running in waist deep water.
Bike
  • 37m 28s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 19.90 mile/hr
Comments:

2 things slowed me down a bit here. The first was my tired legs from the run through the water. The second is that my legs never really warm up until about 8 miles into a ride. My average was in the low 18's on the way out and I pushed it up to about 20 by the time I got back. If I was doing the Olympic, I would have had a faster time because I would have had more miles to ride after my legs had warmed up.
Is there any way to teach my legs to warm up faster? Just ride more?
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Transition 2
  • 01m 50s
Comments:

Last year I had to pin on my # to my shirt for the run. This year I had is pinned to a second shirt, removed my bike shirt and put on the #ed shirt. Problem is the pins pulled through the paper while I was putting the shirt on. LOL Guess it is time to get one of those elastic waste bands that the race # attaches to.
Run
  • 26m 20s
  • 3.11 miles

Comments:

This was just the best I was able to do. My body felt fine, but my lungs just could not give any more oxygen. In fact, I was seeing in tunnel vision during the run as I suspect my head was not getting enough oxygen.
What would you do differently?:

Do more brick training to get used to running after biking.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Mistakes and tight lungs from asthma the night before.

I know your not terribly pleased, but it was your first tri this year.  As for not being warmed up, you should really try to get some jogging and biking in before they close the transition area.  I know it seems like you wait forever, but it does get the muscles awake and ready to go, shakes off the cobwebs from the night before.

Good Job regardless!!  You'll do better at ludington.

Don't worry Shortyy, I had a lot of fun. I was just trying to point out the mistakes I made and what I learned from them. Your right about the warm up. Last year at Ludington I biked from the hotel to the event, did a short jog and i swam a bit to get warmed up. It was much better than starting out cold.

Hey Blue - good report. I was there too. In the swim wave ahead of you and made the same mistake standing up. I was tired of swimming though, it seemed kind of long. I was in the water three minutes longer than Motor City three weeks ago. Did you get all the high fives on the run from the little cheerleaders? That was fun.

Hello Slick,
I saw your numbers, you did well. Once i started swimming right, I actually enjoyed it. Kinda wish I did the Olympic for the swim and the bike. not sure how I would have taken the run at the end though as I was having tunnel vision at end of the 3.1 mile run LOL.
yeah I saw all the kids giving high fives. It was difficult for me to concentrate on much but the run, but i didn't want to dissapoint them so I slapped as many hands as I could. All in all it was a pretty nice race. I think I will be back again next year.
