Subject: OWS options in Grand Rapids area
I just bought my first wet suit and want to get some practice in open water. The question is, where are good places to do this in the Grand Rapids area?

I've read where some folks advocate swimming in a pool with their wetsuit as long as you thoroughly rinse it and others who are adamently opposed. I'm holding off on the pool but not much longer.

Depending on were you are in GR, Reeds lake may be an option.  I live farther west and try to use lake MI as much as posible.

I have heard of a 555 swiming group that swims in reeds lake at 5:55 in the morning. They swim twice a week but I am not sure on the days. Check with Tearrince Ruban at metro helth sports medicine he put this togather.

I know a lot of people go to Jenison and swim in Georgetown Lake off 8th Ave and Chicago Dr.

Has anyone ever swam in Versluis Park? It's a portion of the man-made lake off of East Beltline/Northland drive. Behind the Blue Water Grille.

Someone told me it's a private little beach but I haven't checked it out.

I swam at Versluis Park as a kid. It is a man made lake from an old gravel pit - i.e. very, very murky water. From what I remember it gets deep pretty fast. It used to have a small public beach (nice sandy area). When I used to go there it wasn't as built up with condos as it is now so I don't know if there is public access anymore.

You can swim at versluis, however it doesn't make allot of sense because they won't let you past the swim area bouys. It's gated now at the public area and there's a life guard there. Great for families not so great for tri--geeks.

I heard there was a group trying to get an weekly open swim group going, but they were running into problems with the township and concern for safety.

I heard the same things recently, the lifeguards get loud if you go beyond the buoys. I ride out Knapp East of the Beltline a lot and each time I cross over the Grand River I think of trying to swim in it. It looks kind of nasty in spots but I'm getting desperate to OWS close to home to save on time.
