I might DNS my Sprint ("C" race) next weekend in favor of a long bike/run for my Oly and HIM ("A" race).  Anybody ever DNS a race in favor of a longer training day instead?

fwiw: I didn't know what I was doing when I made my schedule and weekends are the only time I can do Long rides/runs.

Personally, no.  Races are training.

Do the race and then do a long ride after.  A couple at one of my races did the sprint (they kicked everyones butt, I guess they always finish 1 and 2) and after the race the wife rode 60+ miles home.  Unless the race is so far away it prohibits doing more later, I don't see the problem.

+1 to all... just do the run course twice or something along those lines.

you get a brick workout at the race. question is do they have an oly distance race also that maybe you can switch do and make it a really long brink work out?

I had 2 races in mind for this weekend (although i had not signed up yet) and I am in the middle of some real build weeks for my A race so I didn't race this weekend, instead I did a long ride on thursday and a long run on saturday....I think that was the right thing for me.

Unless the race is a sprint and you are training for a IM I would not skip the race.  But I am cheap and would not want to waste the money.

I don't race that often, so no, this has never come up for me.   I learn something about myself from every race, so I would race and add on if I felt I needed some more build.

I hold fast to the creede: DFL>DNF>DNS

No, the only time I DNS'd a tri was to recover from bronchitus.  I 2nd the vote for doing a long ride/run after - or even commuting to the race, if you wan't to maximize the day.

When faced with this problem, I do the race, and then do the long workouts on a day during the week that would otherwise be reserved for hard workouts. By racing, you still get hard workouts in that week, and a race is a better workout than you can ever do on your own in training. It's just the ol' switcharoo.

I haven't been faced with this exact situation, but I can definitely see skipping a C race in favor of an A-race-specific training session. That's why we prioritize the races - so that we know what our training priorities are.
