Welcome to the Running Challenge

Whats Halloween without some ghosts? Human or vague in appearance, they can be both good or evil, what kind your team wants to be is up to you J

This team is also one of two (mostly) newbie teams in the competition, put together by your requests.

Your team line up is:

1. Antti asu

2. BunnyB

3.Cleavitt

4. Gailg (team cheerleader)

5. Lastcall2003

6. Morgenrr

7. MrsUSMC

8. sk2a2005

9. TriAya

10. wurkit gurl

11. zipp1

Please introduce yourself to your team below with your goals for the challenge and running in general, what they are training for as well as names and any other general info.

You will also need to nominate/select/volunteer a Team Leader whose role will be to collect the commitments for each runner and collect your team results every Monday.

Your running time must be logged in your BT Log for verification purposes, but you are responsible for reporting your weekly results to your Team Leader on Mondays, this is done by posting an update in your team thread in the challenges forum unless the team prefers another method.

Attached to this post is an excel excel spreadsheet to be used by the Team Leader for your team tracking and should be sent to me on Tuesdays AM so I can get an challenge update post in the forum by Wednesday each week. The spreadsheet includes the details of any team members who have already made a challene commitment.

I will be maintaining a Team Leaders thread for any queries, questions etc so if there are any problems please let me know.

This is a team competition so please support your team mates with inspires, motivation and encouragement as well as pledge your allegiance in your sig line, log and even avatar!

Good natured sledging and competition with the other teams is part of the fun so feel free to stir up a bit of friendly rivalry,

Most importantly this is all about fun and you reaching your goals!!!!

So…time to get running! Let the challenge begin!!

Wohoo! First team post! Glad to see a couple fellow Barlo-peeps on my team, and a few people that I don't know at all I pledged 50 miles for this month, because I HATE running, but I want to get better at it. This might be a light week, because I have a race on Saturday, so I don't want to overdo it, but after Saturday, I'll probably be doing 3 runs a week - albeit most of them on the short end, since I'm not a runner. Um, not sure who I nominate for team leader. Yanti (TriAya) was an awesome team leader for the Tour de France challenge, but it's up to her if she wants to do it again.

Subject: RE: The Things That Go Bump In The Night Team Thread

I am definitely something that goes bump in the night; I haven't slept through an entire night in so long I can't remember the last time!

I am official team cheerleader; I am having a hard time picking a goal for the month because I train with a coach (the best one in the world), and he tells me what to do, and I only get a few weeks at a time.  Plus I don't believe in high-volume training, which puts me in the minority here at BT.  But, I am going from leg surgery on Jan 2 (both legs, see my album) to a half marathon Dec 2 and wanted to join the community of runners this month.  I couldn't run at all before the surgery (for like 20 years) and hope to be inspiring to our newbie team!

Here are some suggestions for team morale ...

  • It is against the rules to say you hate running.    Penalty points will apply (as in, we'll make you run sprint intervals).
  • It is against the rules to say you are "not a runner."  Penalty points will apply (as in, we'll make you run longer distances per run).
  • It is against the rules to overtrain just to meet your goals ... if it hurts, stop.  If you're just whiny, go.   No penalty points, because you'll discover the penalty for overtraining on your own, if you do it (which I know you won't...).
  • You should report the music you run to, the places you go (with pix if possible), who you passed, how you feel, etc., with AT LEAST ONE positive thing to say about every run.
  • If you are having a bad day, you should beg for inspiration.

Looking forward to playing with y'all...

Gail

I will probably be running mostly at the gym, only because during the week, daylight is running super-scarce already (dusky by 7pm and it's not really light out until 7am) and unless I can find folks to run with, I don't feel safe running alone outside - unfortunately, most of my tri-friends are much faster runners. So no fun pics, since the track is very un-exciting-looking Though I can probably conjure up a pic of my upcoming race on Saturday Not necessarily of me on the run leg, but I will be running through the finish line

Oh, and I forgot to post earlier, I am probably doing the "Jingle All The Way 10K" here in December, so that is my training goal. Even if I'm still a slow bugger, I want to be able to finish the 6.2 miles without having to walk any of it.

I'm Terri. I have to agree with the Bump in the Night from not sleeping all night long as well! I started running 7 weeks ago. Right now it's back to walking though since I've developed plantar faciitis. Woohoo! My first sports injury, ever!

I run at 5 a.m. (6 on Sat/Sun) I started doing it at this time because I didn't want anyone to see me. Now I do it because it gets my day going and I feel really good about myself all day long. When I miss a day (like today) I feel off. I also know that if I miss my run in the morning I'm probably not going to feel like doing it in the evening after working all day.

I'm married to a triathlete so am very familiar with the life. He's great inspiration and motivation and I consider him my "coach." I don't know what I'm going to do without him when he leaves for Iraq! He's great support and I think my wanting to do this and getting out there has brought us closer.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to contributing to our group. I'm really motivated since I have my first 5k on Thanksgiving (with BunnyB) and kind of consider that race the beginning of my "season."

Oh, and I don't hate running, but I'm very new at it and it's hard and it hurts! LOL

We're lagging down at the bottom, so I thought I'd bump us up!

And lately, I've been going bump in the night too - and since my room is on the lower level under the kitchen, on the days I sleep in (until 7:30), I am woken up by my roommate tramping around. I'm a really light sleeper and everything wakes me up. I worry about earplugs, because then I'm afraid I wouldn't hear my alarm.

I think it would be tough to sleep with Earplugs!

Weird, weird dreams woke me up in the middle of the night!  I dreamt I had been killed and then I was a ghost - maybe it was a premonition of my October Challenge team being "Things That go Bump in the Night"

or

it could be that I watched a few too many episodes of SVU and Criminal Intent - I'll admit it, I'm a total junkie!

So, I woke up in the middle of the night because of my nightmare and couldn't get back to sleep

So, I realized I didnt' really introduce myself

My name is Beth and I'm from Omaha, NE.  I have 3 kids, a freshman in college, a senior in HS and a 7th grader - Boy, Girl, Boy.

I am just finishing my second season of tri'ing - I now have 6 races under my belt (well technically  5 & 1/3).  My last race was a team effort, I did the swim leg.  Our team came in 2nd in the women's team.  (I actually met my two teammates via BT.com!)

Per the rules of engagement, I cannot say 'I am not a runner', so I will not say it - LOL.  Truthfully, I had made a ton of progress and was at the point that I could run 6 miles fairly comfortably when I started suffering from Plantar Faciitis.  I've been trying to kick it since late May/early June.

I will be contributing my time toward the run on the eliptical.  I really want my foot to completely heal before I start running again.

I LOVE to swim.

Looking forward to doing the challenge with all of you.  I just finished up the Sept Swim/Bike challenge and found it to be a great way to stay motivated and to meet some really cool people!

Haha, I have horrible dreams sometimes too (or get really freaked out about being alone, etc) because I watch too much SVU and CSI

I watch the crime shows too, and although I miss him, I can't blame Mandy Patinkin for quitting Criminal Minds because of its complete creepiness.  I live in the mountains and often hear bumps in the night, which can include roof-bound deer, coons, coyotes, skunks, foxes, possums, bears, and mountain lions -- all of which I've crossed paths with lately while out running or cycling...

What does everyone have on tap for this week?

Subject: RE: The Things That Go Bump In The Night Team Thread

hello everybody, my name is antti, and i'm a sports-aholic. this time. need to get back in shape. my wife's been having kids lately (two boys, 2y4m and 11m) and while she was breast feeding them and rapidly losing weight, it all came in me. seriously. i started my new life, or actually we started our new life early august. now i've lost already almost ten kilos and aila some five.

i did one sprint last year practically without training - overweight also - here in bahrain. i'm a reasonable swimmer, used to compete some 20 years ago, i have biked my whole life - commuting and tracking but never ran intentionally. i was in military for ten years, so i do know how to run. and now i need to like it, right gail?

we live as expat here in bahrain, now for three years already and i work as an air traffic controller.

anyway, lets pump it all!!!

Hello antti (and aila). Congratulations to you both on your family.

Chrissy, have you thought about getting a noise machine? They make a low pitched noise, sometimes like the ocean, that helps to drown out noises around you.

I'm usually awake because of my 2 dogs. We had one attacked by a coyote (it jumped our fence) a couple of years ago, and just about 6 weeks ago one charged the fence with my husband standing there, so when the dogs get up and go outside at night I wake up, then have a time getting back to sleep.

I like crime shows too, but normally watch them as re-runs on Spike or whatever channel has them, since they usually come on at my bedtime. Haven't gotten TIVO yet, but we've been talking about it more.

As to what I'm doing this week, training wise, walking Tues, Wed, Fri, Sat. a.m., strength training Tues evening, Thurs a.m. and maybe Saturday. Sunday if my free day, when I go to WW and do my grocery shopping and just laze about. However, I'm starting to feel guilty about that. I'm hoping to go to the Y this week after work and talk to them about swimming. Gotta get husband to go with me so will work that around his schedule.

This week, I'm taking it mildly easy because I have a race on Saturday and don't want to wear out my legs, but I do want to get them back in the game; I've been lazy lately- but this is a fairly easy (read: mostly flat) race, so considering I didn't die or come in last at my last race which was RIDICULOUSLY hard, I'm not terribly concerned. This is just for fun, to say I did two triathlons in my first season I'm doing 3 miles tonight and will probably do a very short run on Thursday (literally, like only a mile or so) and then the 3.1 at my race on Saturday. Next week though, I'm starting a much more structured plan, which will begin with prep weeks for some serious base building leading into the winter (cuz swimming is my only semi-strong suit) and then once I have my races planned out for next year, I'll go into race training mode, but that's not for awhile.

Oh, I should check out a noise machine. White noise shouldn't bother me, though I don't know how well it would mask the thumping from upstairs, but it's worth a shot!

Oh, and I am also hoping to lose some excess flab that I've gained as of late, with all this running, since it's the ultimate calorie burner, even more so than swimming or biking.

Okay gailg,   Sounds like you're captain cause you're running a tight ship the first day out on our challenge!

I actually love a good run-got into the tri thing by injuring a sesmoid overtraining to run so I know what that does to me...I have a 10 K in 2 weeks and an 8 K early Nov, after that I'm looking for local events to meet my "race a month" goal.  Long term goal for triathalon is the Patriot HIM in Williamsburg next September and the RIchmond SunTrust marathon in November.  Which of course means the 10K in March and I think there's a half mary in Virginia Beach in March or April too...but I digress.  Hello to my former Barloworld buddies TriAya and wurkitgurl and welcome aboard sk2a2005, glad you came along for the run.  Looking forward to getting to know you all...

Hi everybody! I am SO excited about doing this challenge with such a great team. Oh, and don't worry about spokes or those other silly TANers ... the picture says it all ... big mouths and ugly. I've had the privilege of being with some of you on past challenges--hello again dearest zipp1, wurkit_gurl, Lastcall2003, and antti asu--and I look forward to getting to know the rest of you!

BTW zipp1, wurkit_gurl and I are the QUEENS of smack talk (hey gail! You know, you're welcome to yell wonderful things at us and not-so-wonderful things at those other teams too ) ... so don't be surprised if things get lively around here. Take it all as a fire under your butt to RUN! (Or walk or trot, or, as I do, waddle quickly).

I'm doing the Santa Monica 5000 later this month and some undetermined marathon later this year (there are some very ugly rumors flying around that I might be doing the California International in Sacramento with some TANers that shall not be named. I deny everything).

Other than a raving obsession with tris and running ridiculously long distances ridiculously slowly, I am like Rain Man about lists of numbers. So I'm happy to be the slave number cruncher team leader, but I am also going to nominate gail and wurkit_gurl (zipp1 too, but if I were you and had to deal with crazy people AND their stats all day long, I'd shoot myself if I had to keep track of all we crazy BT people and our numbers, too).

Cool runnings to everybody!!!
