Pool - salty / cloudy water?

Champion  23360      Taser-World |  Subject: Pool - salty / cloudy water?What does it mean when the pool water is cloudy and tastes salty? I'm assuming it means the pool isn't clean, but what specifically could cause this? And how can it be corrected? (And no, I don't deliberately drink the pool water.) It's the only gym around. So I don't have a lot of options. Thanks!  Dee |

If it's bromine, I'm ok with it. The chart they post says chlorine: (temp, pH, chlorine). But they probably wouldn't write bromine because people would be less familar with it. So that could be a possibility. I'm hoping it's bromine. Pee or sweat would be much more, um, icky. Thanks! Dee |

Master 1420 Running trails in S. Ontario | Subject: RE: Pool - salty / cloudy water? You are fortunate if it is bromine, as it is much gentler on the skin than chlorine. You may also notice that your skin may feel a tad slimy after being in a bromine pool. |

Cure is they need to up the chlorine, add a stabalizer if they dont have it in there, add a solution that binds with the growing algea stuff (if it is white cloudy the stuff is probly dead but not filtered) if its green and cloudy they need to shock it with double the base chlorine, maybe even add an algacide and then the blue stuff that binds with the small dead algea particles so that they will get taken out by the filter. Up the chlorine - They add a LOT already. I'll shower after swimming, and shower again the next morning, and I can STILL smell chlorine. Stabilzer - Don't know if they're using that. Will ask. Binder solution - Don't know if they're using it. But the water is white cloudy, not green cloudy. Filter issues - That's possible. I don't know how often they clean it. Several times, there has been a smell to the water too. Can't describe it other than it wasn't "minty-fresh." The water is particularly cloudy/salty on those days. So maybe it's a filtration issue. Where did you learn so much about pools and pool chemistry? (Hey, I thought you were going bike shopping today?) Thanks! Some good suggestions in your post. I don't drink the water, but I can help but get water in my mouth when I'm swimming. I have to wear a nose plug to keep the chlorine out of my sinuses. It hasn't been that bad in a long while, thankfully. The last time it was that bad was in the spring, and soon after the local swim lagoon opened up, so I didn't have to swim inside for a while. Since I've had to switch back to the pool, it hasn't been like that. If it's "icky" you should talk to the manager. |

This comes from using chlorine bleach for thier source of chlorine- Sodium Hypochlorite. It can break down to form NaCl-table salt. I saw the following on that page: "Household bleach and pool chlorinator solutions are typically stabilized by a significant concentration of lye (caustic soda, NaOH) as part of the manufacturing reaction. Skin contact will produce caustic irritation or burns due to defatting and saponification of skin oils and destruction of tissue. The slippery feel of bleach on skin is due to this process." Um. So basically, they are disinfecting the pool using Drano and Liquid Plumber. (Don't believe me? Check the bottles. The two main ingredients are sodium hydroxide (lye) and sodium hypochlorite (bleach).) Yeah, bases, such as bleach, would be slippery on the skin. Saponification is how they used to make soap. Animal fat + lye --> soap. So our skin provides the fat, and the pool provides the lye. Delightful...... Especially since I swam 28,900 yards in there last month. Dee |
