Run
Comments: The race is on 11/11 at 11:11 and a USATF-certified 11K. After the runners lined up at the start, we did the pledge, then taps while they set the flag to half staff, then the cannon start right at 11:11. COOL! I wanted to do a better time than last year when I started to run more seriously than the occasional :30 min cardio. Last year I did it in 1:00.55, which were 8:55 miles and I've been running mostly 9:15's over the summer. And during the oly triathlons, I was doing just under 10 min/miles. I didn't quite feel completely hydrated when I lined up for the race, but decided if I wanted to do better than last years, that I wouldn't stop for water - I could survive an hour running without it! As fortune would have it, I ran into a woman who does spin class with me and qualifies for Boston every year. Her husband and 14-yr old son were running too. I told her I wanted to go under an hour, and she said "Oh you will!" I mentioned I'd be happy with 9:20s and she said that's what she wanted to roughly do that too, as she'd been off from running due to plantar fasciitis on one foot and a neuroma on the other (yikes). Anyway, we kinda ended up running and chatting together (how I could talk at that pace was beyond me), I decided I was pushing it, and she decided she was "just right" for her injuries so we ran together. (Actually she paced me!) The one long uphill and last mile and a half were tough....but I managed decent splits and was extremely happy with my time. Gonna be tough PRing this next year! 1 - 8:12 2 - 8:21 3 - 8:29 4 - 8:25 5 - 8:40 6 - 8:05 6.835 - 6:20 I also found out over the course of our conversations during the run that our spin instructor is NOT PREGNANT as I'd previously thought. Thank god I didn't say anything to anyone at the gym!! This woman can spin! I learned that she's "just fat" (not my words!)- thyroid issues. Doesn't matter. My spin instructor is still HOSS! Post race
Warm down: Our husbands were standing at the finish line when we finished so we stood around waiting for Ann's son to finish who came in at 1:03. We introduced husbands and chatted for a while. Her husband said that he thinks he'll register to do the 1/2 Iron that I'm going to do in June! He did the 11K in 53 min. Event comments: Thank You Vets! This is kind of a fun race for me because I grew up a military brat, and all the key men in my life have served during major conflicts, so it was always around me....until I moved up to New England and it seems non-existent here. OTOH when I go back home to Va. Beach, I get OD'd on it (but I never get tired of hearing the jets going/coming from sorties from Oceana or seeing the ships lit up during Christmas time at NAS Norfolk). Something about military protocol that reminds me of childhood I guess....I remember playing on base or somewhere and hearing taps and we'd all have to stop and stand at attention....I digress... The proceeds from the race go to the Vets here in the area, so I think it's a great cause. When I registerd, on a whim I signed my husband up for the race because he liked the t-shirt they have. No, he didn't run, but we gave the vets another $20 and now he has a shirt :) Last updated: 2004-11-11 12:00 AM

Couple cups of coffee and some oatmeal.
Sat around with husband and chatted for a while. This is the only race he'll really come with me to since it's the next town over and starts at 11:11. Close and not too early!
Of course, in timely fashion, I have to listen to old military stories. His favorite is Grenada......"There I was, yankin' and bankin'.........." (good lawrd) :)
