Overcast
Total Time = 56m 42s
Overall Rank = 115/210
Age Group = F 30-39
Age Group Rank = 13/25
Pre-race routine:

Couple cups of coffee and some oatmeal.
Event warmup:

Sat around with husband and chatted for a while. This is the only race he'll really come with me to since it's the next town over and starts at 11:11. Close and not too early!

Of course, in timely fashion, I have to listen to old military stories. His favorite is Grenada......"There I was, yankin' and bankin'.........." (good lawrd) :)
Run
  • 56m 35s
  • 11 kms
  • 05m 08s  min/km
Comments:

The race is on 11/11 at 11:11 and a USATF-certified 11K. After the runners lined up at the start, we did the pledge, then taps while they set the flag to half staff, then the cannon start right at 11:11. COOL!

I wanted to do a better time than last year when I started to run more seriously than the occasional :30 min cardio. Last year I did it in 1:00.55, which were 8:55 miles and I've been running mostly 9:15's over the summer. And during the oly triathlons, I was doing just under 10 min/miles.

I didn't quite feel completely hydrated when I lined up for the race, but decided if I wanted to do better than last years, that I wouldn't stop for water - I could survive an hour running without it! As fortune would have it, I ran into a woman who does spin class with me and qualifies for Boston every year. Her husband and 14-yr old son were running too. I told her I wanted to go under an hour, and she said "Oh you will!" I mentioned I'd be happy with 9:20s and she said that's what she wanted to roughly do that too, as she'd been off from running due to plantar fasciitis on one foot and a neuroma on the other (yikes).

Anyway, we kinda ended up running and chatting together (how I could talk at that pace was beyond me), I decided I was pushing it, and she decided she was "just right" for her injuries so we ran together. (Actually she paced me!) The one long uphill and last mile and a half were tough....but I managed decent splits and was extremely happy with my time.
Gonna be tough PRing this next year!

1 - 8:12
2 - 8:21
3 - 8:29
4 - 8:25
5 - 8:40
6 - 8:05
6.835 - 6:20
I also found out over the course of our conversations during the run that our spin instructor is NOT PREGNANT as I'd previously thought. Thank god I didn't say anything to anyone at the gym!! This woman can spin! I learned that she's "just fat" (not my words!)- thyroid issues. Doesn't matter. My spin instructor is still HOSS!

Post race
Warm down:

Our husbands were standing at the finish line when we finished so we stood around waiting for Ann's son to finish who came in at 1:03. We introduced husbands and chatted for a while. Her husband said that he thinks he'll register to do the 1/2 Iron that I'm going to do in June! He did the 11K in 53 min.

Event comments:

Thank You Vets!

This is kind of a fun race for me because I grew up a military brat, and all the key men in my life have served during major conflicts, so it was always around me....until I moved up to New England and it seems non-existent here. OTOH when I go back home to Va. Beach, I get OD'd on it (but I never get tired of hearing the jets going/coming from sorties from Oceana or seeing the ships lit up during Christmas time at NAS Norfolk). Something about military protocol that reminds me of childhood I guess....I remember playing on base or somewhere and hearing taps and we'd all have to stop and stand at attention....I digress...

The proceeds from the race go to the Vets here in the area, so I think it's a great cause. When I registerd, on a whim I signed my husband up for the race because he liked the t-shirt they have. No, he didn't run, but we gave the vets another $20 and now he has a shirt :)

LOL Lara, I did run in a dress once! It was an ivory colored beaded and sequined, off the shoulder number with a beautifully long train. I just didn't run fast enough!!

Yeah guys, holy s**t those are FAST splits for ME. As for Hyannis I could never last a half marathon that fast for damn sure and I'm not pretending that this race is normal performance for me. At best I'll be good for 9:45s for a half. Provided I get that day off and can do Hyannis, I want to run it for fun among friends (not for times) And I'll do it in a dress, Lara. WE HAVE GOT TO FULFILL THOSE BRIDESMAIDS DRESSES' DESTINIES! ("oh you can wear *this* again!" Is velvet breathable?

May - Fantabulous race!!! You busted 9 minute miles faster than a master sergeant making a break for the STD clinic after a weekend in Tiajuana!! (The best vet's day analogy I could come up with in a pinch) Now ... would you please stop lamenting how difficult a new PR will be next year ...? Will you please stop repeating how you can't believe you ran that pace ...? You did and you can. Again and again. You can't imagine the success that lies within you when you just believe!! If you can run those splits for 11K, imagine what you can do in your next 5K. Way to ROCK!!!

what is going to be interesting is there is no F*ing way i am running in a strapless bra...  we should find that pic. and post it

I WON'T even run with a regular tri top on let alone go strapless. I was gonna throw the thing over my running clothes and pin the shoulders to my top - it would be too cold to run in the dress alone! Oh honey please!! I gotcher pic right here!!!!

No, but sometimes I wear high heels to bed : )~   LOL   (just in my dreams really)

ROFLMAO we're turning my race report into a cocktail party. I love it!!!  Talk about "holy SPLIT, your SH!TS are fast!" (I missed that initially from Gary)........ Staff Sgts running to VD clinics....... he he he....strapless bras falling down to your waist and avoiding projectiles....wearing old bridesmaids dresses to races because the bride swore we could wear them again....and wearing heels to bed..........what else?

Ellen, I don't know if Mike would approve of your wearing your wedding dress to the race. I think those are one-time dealies. If you do, I GET TO BE THE MATRON OF HONOR!!!!!!!  Ha ha ha ha ha haaaaaaaaaa SHOTGUN

May -- great race! I'm going to put it on my calendar for next year. I love the 11km at 11:11

I've heard of playing football in bridesmaids dresses, but a half-marathon?? Well, why not??

I might be able to join y'all in Hyannis -- but I've never been a bridesmaid, only a bride. Can I play anyway?
