Barns Green Half Marathon - Run

View Member's Race Log
Barns Green,
England
Overcast
Total Time = 2h 00m 35s
Overall Rank = 925/1270
Age Group = Senior Lady
Age Group Rank = 92/180
Pre-race routine:

Ate small portions of high carbohydrate foods for breakfast and on train to event, supplemented with water. Brisk 2.5 mile walk from station to event. Drank carbohydrate drink in hour leading up to event.
Event warmup:

Chatted to other club members and shuffled about a bit to keep warm.
Run
  • 2h 00m 35s
  • 13.11 miles
  • 09m 12s  min/mile
Comments:

Event started late, this combined with liquid intake and usual loo queues meant I needed to dart behind bush at about mile 9 for loo stop. Felt much more comfortable for having done so. Used race to test out SiS Go energy gels - don't much like texture but able to get it down. Orange flavour tolerable, Tropical flavour (and texture) not nice.
Overall the run was good. Took first 5 miles at under 9 minute mile pace (though hilliness made pace difficult to judge at times). Don't think that going slower at that time would have enabled me to pick up faster pace towards end as weariness set in. Considerably less muscle soreness in hip flexors than at Cabbage Patch 10M.
What would you do differently?:

Re-join loo queue as soon as left it the first time!

Post race
Warm down:

Jogged around field for approximately 10 minutes, then stretched. Changed quickly, starting consuming post-race carbohydrate, then brisk walk 2.5 miles back to catch train home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Experience and ability.

Event comments:

Well organised race with plenty of local support and lots of drink stations. Mile markers every mile, nice T shirt, excellent value for money.

Using official time, but didn't cross start line until 1 minute 27 had elapsed. So unofficially under 2 hours (1:59:08/9:05 minute miles) in debut half marathon. Both times under training plan target time (of 2 hours and 2 minutes).
Course: Very pretty but definitely undulating! Hardly a flat metre the whole way round.

Jane, Way to go on finishing your half marathon. That is really incredible, don't know if I could ever do that. That's great you got in under 2 hours That must have been tough with no flat ground to run on. ugh! Keep up the great work!
