Subject: Different sorta Abs Challenge?

Come January 1, the holidays will be over and many of us will have eaten our way to a few extra unwanted pounds.  I have an idea for a really easy but possibly very rewarding challenge.

The "Lose The Love Handles Challenge"
Specs...
1.  Good nutrition.  You don't have to follow a strict p/f/c plan or split, but just concentrate on eating clean. Try to cut out high-glycemic carbs (processed sugars, white bread, etc.) and processed/hydrogenated fats (junk food, fast food, etc.)
2.  Twice a day, four days a week minimum, complete the following mini-workout...
20 low-to-high woodchoppers each side (if you don't know what these are, ask)
20 side bends on each side
20 crunches that involve obliques (bicycles, lying oblique crunches, half twists, etc.)
This entire workout should take less than 5 minutes to complete.

You'll still train abs and core with your regular workouts, but add this to your regimen to target and tone the obliques.  You choose the time and days you do them, as long as it's a minimum of twice a day for four days a week.  You can do more, but those are the minimum requirements.

No scoring, no teams, no spreadsheet...just post progress and results in this thread.  It would start on 1/1/2008.

Any takers?

Woodchoppers? Please explain

Seconded.

Also, I'm new here, but consider me in. Got some stubborn fat around my middle that needs to disappear.

Woodchoppers:

Starting position: OK, you can do this one at the gym with light (5lb - 10lb) dumbbells, or at home with bottles of water.  Hold the weight in your right hand.  Stand up straight.  Put your left hand on your left hip.  Now bend over about 45 degrees and let your right hand hang down.  In the bent down position twist your torso, so that your right hand is just about touching your left knee, keeping your legs facing forward.  That's the starting position.  Your right arm should be across your body.

Movement: The exercise is performed by twisting your upper body all the way to the right (your chest should be pointing 90 degrees to the right), keeping your legs facing forward while your hand and arm comes up to where you'd bring it in doing a lateral dumbbell raise (hand and arm pointing straight out, keep a slight bend in elbow).  Do required number of reps.  Repeat for other side.

All the exercise really is, is a lateral dumbbell raise with a torso twist.  It just puts the emphasis of the weight on the obliques and lower back.  You get a little bit of shoulder involvement too, because of the raise.

If you do these at the gym, you can do the with dumbbells, but the best way to do them is with cables, and you can do them low to high OR high to low (high to low just reverses the positions but the movement is equal and opposite).  I do both on my shoulder/abs day since they involve both.  They're a great little exercise.  They also help strengthen the transverse abdominus, so planks will get easier when you do these too.

Since I have 7 days until the 1st, can I just eat garbarage until then so I can have a 'good' before picture? OK, maybe not. I'm just staring at all this food and want to go nuts.

I got a kick out of this. Eating fatty foods is bad for you. It's even worse if you're obese and your body is worn down from all the abuse its received. I'm quite shocked as I try to comprehend an 1800 calorie fatty meal. I could have downed one of these ten years ago and not even flinched. Now I wretch at the thought of putting that junk in me.

Of course, I say that as I eat cookies like they're going out of style...

OK, I am in with the caveat that I may need to bail out as sometimes twisting/oblique type thnigs, like bicycle crunches, etc., tweak my lower back and if that happens, well its not good.

Side bends and the woodchoppers are not that big a deal, its just the twisting crunches that sometimes do it to me. Q, any other options for that?

Another question: what is the benefit of 2x/day? Or is that simply part of the challenge?

Anyway, as noted, I am in and look for advice re: options.

Merry New Year everyone.

I have problems developing my lower abs. My obliques are fine and my upper abs are really strong. I mainly do floor wipers (300 style), knees-to-elbows, and sit-ups. Any tips?

Unfortunately the cookies were a "success". I taped myself today and I gained 1.5 inches on my waist since I taped myself 4 months ago. I attribute some of it to increased core muscle size, but I definitely have more fat than I did before.

I'll join this challenge - it will be a good to have a frequent reminder of what I'm eating after the Christmas season is over (I'll start on the 1st but take a pass for 6th because I'm eating a holiday dinner that day.)

Among the contributors to the junk at work was Curves gym. I think they were trying to drum up business. They sent boxes of goodie bags with chocolate and candy into all the wards.

I think I cheated by starting early.  I have a trip to Orlando in 2 weeks so I figured a couple more days of this will help tighten things up.

I'm trying to gain some lean muscle mass while losing fat. I am hungry before I go to bed and I like to have a snack but heard that I should limit carbs before bedtime. Any thoughts/ideas?

Thanks,
Steve

ChicagoMan65 - Yes, definitely some alternatives.  Lying oblique crunches would be my first suggestion.  Now, if the ones where your legs are in the fetal position and your back is flat would hurt ya, you can try them this way...

Extend your legs all the way out, secure your feet under something heavy (like someone's hands) and lie on your side with your hand behind your head like you were gonna do a situp.  Now crunch up to your side from the floor.  This is an advanced move but it hits the obliques HARD!  It's a Trixie-level exercise.

If that still hits your back too much, then just do an extra 20 woodchoppers on each side.  That should be OK.

Also, no REAL benefit to twice a day...just part of the challenge.  Certainly won't hurt ya.

Steve - You're right, carbs before bed can be bad.  I usually have a protein shake in 4oz. of skim milk and 2oz. of water.   Some sugar carbs in the milk, but a little bit of lactose in there will help you digest the protein...plus the protein in the milk is a mixture of whey and casein and will help slow down the whey protein digestion and keep your muscles fed thru the night.

Hey everyone. I hope you're pumped about the challenge. It's always hard to get off to a good start on the first. Especially when you're watching football... and your team then makes you have craving because they get beat. But to analogize Dr. Sears (The Zone Diet), You're always One Meal away from being back on track.

BTW - the abs workout is a lot more taxing than it looks.

Okay, first day done, and yes it is more challenging than it sounds.

No woodchoppers in the Exercise descriptions. I put them in as standing twists.
