Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Alice - sorry to hear about your foot - stinking snow - it needs to go away! Looks like we will be ships passing in the night, I am headed to California on Thursday. My folks have a condo in Palm Springs (about 2 hours east of Pasadena) in the desert and my son and I are headed out for some short lived R&R. I am very excited about the prospect of being able to SBR in 70 degree weather. Pat, I am glad to hear that you and your daughter are on the mend and you should try a spinning class - they can be a lot of fun. I hit one this morning at 5:30 am - oh how I despise mornings - but after the hour spin class and a 30 minute swim I was in a great mood. Good luck on your easy run - don't push too hard and have a relapse in sickness - that's the worst. Hope everyone else is doing well. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() @ Pat, sorry about your bout with the crud and kids with the cooties. Too bad they don't vaccinate for chicken pox in the UK.@ Alice sorry about the foot. Do you have an ortho boot? It takes the pressure off the joint and allows you to walk. So, my husband and I learned a valuable lesson about the bike fit. I bought a hybrid bike in the event that I hated the tri experience, I would have a bike I could ride around in with the girls and Tim; my husband asks that I refer to him henceforth as Tim-Almighty.We chose REI because they have an excellent return policy for members. I purchased a bike that would not break the bank. After reading Alice's blog about the bike fit and seeing the same advice in Jon Friels' book and failing to conquer the small hills in my neighborhood, we went for a bike fit. My husband just thought I was VERY out of shape, sweet man that he is, and that I needed to bike the hills more often. I WAS VINDICATED. HI FIVES ALL AROUND. The fitter raised my seat 3 inches, moved my handlebars forward an inch and leveled my seat. The fitter said, "I bet your quads were burning right away." I replied, "Yeah, I can't make it up the hills." Turns out I wasn't doggin' the hills like my husband thought. But I'd better not gloat too much until next weekend when he takes me back on the hills :-) Edited by dajotkjo 2010-02-22 8:06 PM |

I had to stand against some contraption and a bunch of measurements were taken. The printout looks like a blue print. It turns out that my bike frame is one size too small but with a $30 change of a tube, I could make the bike work for the tri. I did not have enough leg extension so I wasn't getting the benefit of using my legs to their full capacity so I was working a lot harder and was not as efficient as I could be. I'll let you know how the hills go next weekend. |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ahohl - 2010-02-22 3:38 PM Spinning class is just riding stationary bikes in a group, with some music and an instructor. Each person controls the tension on the wheel, so you can go at your own pace. You should try it! It's fun!
Ahhhh - I had a misconception of a room of special bikes with big heavy flywheels that needed to be spinned at a million miles an hour for an hour - might look into that now. Pat... |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well I've booked my 1st event - a Duathlon. It's not until April and is a 2.7 mile run (1 lap) 16.2 mile bike (6 laps) and a 2.7 mile run again. Now the training really starts! Pat... |

How exciting, it's great to have something to work toward. FYI: I flew out to California yesterday to see my folks and let them visit with my son. I am very excited about being able to SBR in beautiful outdoors! I'll keep you all posted of my adventures. Hope everyone has a great weekend. TGIF |

I arrived in sunny Palm Springs, California last night - got out for 5 mile run this morning a personal best at 8:59 a mile, yahoo! Hope you all are enjoying the weekend. |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Durrrrr........ What's the weather like over there? I got up and went for a 4 mile run (furthest I've run in 6 years) in the snow and before a lot of people were out of bed - just the odd old (er) person out getting their paper. Are we all mad? I know that until you cross the finish line on your 1st duathlon or triathlon, you're not officially a duathlete or a triathlete, so what are you? Dua-curious / Tri-curious? Pat ;-) |

Pat ;-) I toally love that Pat and I think that is a perfect way to describe us - Tri or Dua Curious, I am totally stealing that. The weather in Palm Springs was nice yesterday 79 degrees, although a bit hazy, unfortunately it is RAINING today and I am very bitter about this ![]() |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Was my b'day today and I ended up with some elastic laces, a new computer for the bike and a turbo trainer. Had a 30 minute turbo session and tried to do one legged runs and couldn't manage more than 30 seconds per leg - is that normal? Anyone got any good turbo sessions I can pinch - suitable for a beginner please! Pat...

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Coaching member | ![]() Hi all! I'm back from Pasadena (biz trip) and I've learned that travel can really screw up a training week! Wow! I did get lucky and get to visit a Master's team two days in a row out there and swim under the sky in a HUGE pool. But my foot was not feeling better (no thanks to sitting for hours on airplanes) so no running at all this week. It is starting to feel better today. Between the conference sessions and the flying (3 days for Cali trip? = bad) I didn't have any time to visit the workout room and do biking or anything. The only way to salvage my week was doing TWO bike trainer sessions today. One with dh during kids' naptime and another one while we all watch a movie together later in the evening. Ddiamond - I can't believe you are in Cali now! I hope you get time to do tri stuff! I REALLY wanted to run there. It took all my discipline to keep myself from further injuring my foot by going before it was ready. Avoneer - Nice birthday prizes!!! |

Totally normal to do one-legged drills for 30 seconds. I remember having a hard time making it to 30 seconds the first few times! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Coaching member | ![]() Book Recommendation: Workouts in a Binder: Swim Workouts for Triathletes by Gale Bernhardt and Nick Hansen This is a small, spiral bound book with lightly laminated pages and a fold out card you can use to make the whole thing stand up on the pool deck. The workouts themselves are pretty extensive, but keep you from doing the same old boring thing in the pool. When I first started, if I had a 30 minute swim session, I would barely make it through the warm up, and I got a little discouraged. Still, nothing wrong with doing the warmup as the main set. Now that I have an hour, I can make it through the "B" main set. Each workout has an A set and a B set and the B set is shorter. |

New user![]() | ![]() So I have been out of the pool for about 2 weeks now with a sore shoulder. I have to believe the bad shoulder is because of poor technique because I dont swim that much. Anyone else experiencing shoulder issues?? |

New user![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If it's still hurting 2 weeks later, I'd get myself to Physio and see what they say. Then perhaps take one or two swimming classes to point you in the right direction and see if that helps or aggravates the shoulder - might be a problem you've had for a while and swimming has just highlighted it. Pat... |
