That much water is way too much. Proper hydration, depending on your sources is anywhere from 80oz to 160oz (2.5 to 5 liters) of water a day. Everything I have read says for a man proper hydration is about 125oz or 3.5 liters.

A gallon is 4 quarts, 1 liter = 1.05 quarts. There is no way that your body could use 2 1/2 gallons of water. It would serve no benefit to you except for more bathroom breaks.

Alternatives to Energy Gels? Does everyone use gels? Or does anyone use alternatives? I'm looking at the cost per packet/serving and starting the research to lower it.

What do you use?

My bro in law was a road cyclist in college and he went the pbj route a lot in training.  That doesnt help a lot on the run though.  Bananas too.  Some folks make their own 'gels' too.  If you search the forums or post something, you might be able to find something.  I just go with the basics and gels.  Helps to buy in bulk to drive down the cost per unit.

So Joe when do you start your taper for IMWI? This week (giving you a full two weeks for full recovery), or next (1 week)?

Anyone making any plans for '08 yet?

Technically, I am in taper, but I bumped a long ride to this weekend cuz a fellow donkey is riding the course and I was beaten down something silly the last time with long hours of training and a cold.  Havent decided if I am doing 4 or 6 hours, but then I get two days off and hours get way shorter.

Oh yeah, starting it next week gives me two full weeks to tear bark off of trees and pace incessantly.

End of this year
09/16 First Oly: I know I am ready for this and will finish. Hopeful time > 2:50:00
10/21 First Half Mary: It wont be fast but I want to run it

This is what I am thinking for '08. Starting at the end of October - off season. I plan on training consistently. Length will be limited due to colder weather but I am planning on strength and speed training. I think that the weight training will help me on getting faster on the swim and I need the speed training badly on my runs.

As for the season... This is what I am planning but we will see what time tells.
2 Sprints
2 Olys
2 Half Mary (or 1 half and 1 full)
? Metric Centurys
1 HIM

Things needed:
Cycle trainer, wetsuit, TT testing, HR zone mapping. (looks like I know what to ask for for Christmas)

Right now my plan is the White Rock Marathon Dec 9th (this year). I'll have to merge part of the marathon training in with my Oly training but it should be okay. Probably swim & bike at least once a week as cross training.

Starting in Jan., I'm looking for a Masters swim (reasonably priced, of course) for Jan, Feb, Mar.

As for races in 2008 - I'm looking at a race series that has a Sprint in June, a Oly in July and a HIM in Sept. Probably pickup a sprint in either Apr or May. I'm still debating (with myself) the Half.

Plans for 08 include first stab at a 50k run in early spring so I have something to do all winter, 2 HIMs and some sprint and olys sprinkled in, along with a bike tour or 3.

Good bike tour in Columbus I am thinking about next year would be two century rides in two days. TOSRV or Tour of Scioto River Valley. Columbus to Portsmouth and back, 212 miles or 106 a day. I know a couple of people that did it and enjoyed the experience.

Plus it would be nice to say (read to watch the reaction of people I tell) I rode the length of Ohio in a weekend.

You are so lucky to live in Texas. You can train outside all year round basically (Yeah I know it gets cold but you don't get snow) and can get a mary in December with out a second thought.

Joe and Jason have it worse than I do and Kristin worse then all of us.

Just sayin you're one lucky ba... athlete... yeah... athlete

And this year we've only been over 100 degrees a handful of days.

Normally by this time, we've been there at least 50 days.

I actually have grown to enjoy running in the winter, as long as it doesn't get down below 10 above - that's my outdoor winter running threshold. I know other folks who will run outside in colder temps than that, but at that point I don't like the way my lungs feel.

That said, it is a long bunch of months spent on a bike trainer. In fact, when I think about it that way, taking a break from the bike doesn't make sense right now, but that's what I've decided to do. I'll hop back on in September/October for a bit before the snow flies.

I was gonna say you are probably about 5-10 colder than us in the winter time and spring hits you guys sooner.  Mathematically, Suck-5 or 10 still equals at least Suck.  I used to have a 20 degree cap on running but cuz of this site thought it was ok to to do an hour at -5.  Tech fabrics are awesome.  I pulled the trigger on a computrainer last fall and plan on strapping myself to that thing all winter in hopes of gaining a mile or two on the avg.

How does that thing work by the way. Fluid v. Wind? Cable lines to computer then line to TV for course data or just on computer? Do you have to buy a separate trainer and the computer hook up is separate?

Yeah I know I could probably search on-line for the answers but this seems easier.

No idea how it compares to anything other than a magnetic trainer that I barely used.  I have a pea brain, short attention span so it kinda convinces me I am playing playstation with some kind of sick ability to beat you up.  Lines just go into computer.  The trainer comes with cables to plug into the PC, but you can also just use the small computer that the CT comes with for some of the programmed workouts.  The CT simulates hills by jacking up resistance or decreasing it accordingly.  Software for the PC includes tons of courses to ride too and there are more you can get online.

I have the same attention span. If you want to download my Oly's course you can go here
http://www.hfpracing.com/computrainer.php
It is the Akron International Sport Festival Course. Probably not as hilly as you are used to.

I think it will probably what I go with as well. Plus I can ride the courses that I would race on without actually traveling there.

(using the voice from IM Kentucky) Congratulations, Ted. YOU ARE A TRIATHLETE!

Sorry, I've got his voice stuck in my head from watching the live feed on Sunday.

One question Ted, did you have fun this weekend with the race?

Are you kidding me, I had so much fun it was unbelievable.  What an incredible feeling.  It felt like a true accomplishment and what was even greater was the sense of community.  Sure there were a few guys cutting me off in bike portion but the majority of triathletes are just great.  Thank you so much to you and to everybody for their support, advice and humor.  I am definitely going to keep going.  Thanks!

Definitely would like to do another sprint and then tackle an Oly.  Haven't thought anything this year yet.  There is one in Sarasota where my in-laws have a place, it is the end of september.  Maybe that one.  Who knows just basking now!

Again, congratulations Ted. It is a huge accomplishment and you should be really proud. Best of luck with your continued training and we all will be looking forward to more of your race reports.

Looks like Joe (IM) is next. You getting nervous yet? I like the Terry the Taper Tapir, it is a nice touch. (Yeah, I know he doesn't have a name on your blog but I like the alliteration)

Then it is Ken (Sprint) and me (Oly) on 09/16.

Kristin is done with tri'ing for the season. Any running race plans or is it straight coaching?
Jason looks like he's still training. You have another race coming up?
Christine is still AWOL.

I am working on putting together a half-mary training plan after my Olympic. The race is Oct. 21 in and around downtown Columbus. Haven't registered yet but I want to have a good plan built before I commit.

I cant say I dont get nervous, but I have gotten better at just being resigned to the fact I have put in the miles prescribed more or less and that I have a plan to race and survive based on a very long summer.  All I gotta do now is show up and hope it works!

Let me rephrase. You getting excited and anxious to get out there?

I still get pre-race jitters... but again this is only year two for me being fully involved in the sport and I still am at the smaller scale of things when you look at the spectrum of the sport.

It has to be an amazing feeling to know you are ready to do an Ironman. I am definately rooting for you and will be waiting for the results. Do you know if they are webcasting this like they did IM KY?
