I have something exciting tonight.  I am getting swim videoed.  There will be a world-class coach on site to analyze stroke.  There are only 4 of us, so lots of personal attention.  This is a start up company that gave me and 3 friends a great deal.  They are going to repeat this after our first tri of the season and then at the end of the season to gauge improvement.  This should be interesting.  I hope the coach doesn't start laughing too loudly when he sees me.

No problem....From what I've heard on other boards, it works best with MS Internet Explorer.

Jo- how was the swim video session?

End of the week. We're heading out to our annual meeting for the local tri club- a potluck dinner, followed by a meeting and beer and wine. Just nice to be around other people who understand our obsession.

Everyone have a good weekend!!!!

Swim video was really good.  It was so cool to see.  They did an on the spot analysis, even showed us how the angles of our arms should be.  We swam for 1.5 hours and they filmed us 5 times to see improvement.  I am struggling to download the video but I have a kid (much more computer savvy than I) working on it.

Question for the group:  I ride at 16-17mph on a tri bike.  I have the oppourtunity to buy an aero helmet.  Should I make the investment?  What have you heard?  Will it help?

Jo-

THE AERO HELMET is a HUGE discussion at our house.

Mike: "It's The Cheapest Way To Buy Speed." He even said that, at the Troy Jacobsen clinic, Troy said 2 things to buy to get faster- wheels ($2000) and an aero helmet. Obvs, the helmet is the cheaper option.

Me: "Mike you will look RIDICULOUS in an aero helmet." I believe that it's the ENGINE that is important. You, your legs, and the time and workouts you put in. An aero helmet is never going to be in my future, mainly because I am in this to just do it. I'm not trying to be faster. And Mike??? Every second counts.

So- Jo- do you want to get faster? Get the helmet. Mike is getting one too.

Okay, Peeps- I'm recommending an article on this site. GREAT READ.

It's on nutrition (my favorite obsession) and a sports nutrition expert's take on The Biggest Loser, a show I personally detest.

Interesting discussion on a helmet.  I need to go out and buy a helmet.  I don't ride very often and have never worried about having one, but knew I would need one to compete so I have been looking at them.  I plan on getting one before I get the bike out this spring.  (After hearing about Natasha Richardson, who  wasn't wearing a ski helmet and I ALWAYS wear a ski helmet, I figured I need to get on the stick with the bike helmet too)

Great article about the Biggest Loser.  I personally watch the show because I love to see the after's.  I usually get it on DVR and then fast forward through a lot of the drama and product placements.  But you're right it is so unrealistic.  I really hated when last week they had them all run a 1/2 marathon on no training.  And here I am killing myself to get all my training in.  And the one girl ran it in about the time I'm hoping to hit this year.  This after 2 years of running races and working up to it.  I did hear that one of them ended up with a stress fracture, but they did not show that on TV.  You're average tv watcher, probably now thinks that anyone can just go out and run 13.1 miles and be fine the next day.  (ARGGH!!)

After 25 miles last week, this is a recovery week for me.  Topping out at 20, woo hoo.  I'm looking forward to some shorter runs and more rest.  Hopefully less miles will also mean less hunger and I can drop a few pounds.  I have put on 4 lbs just since starting training.  Talk about frustrating.

You are building muscle, Ginny. I really have stayed in the same weight range since I started training- I just drop sizes. Don't get down on yourself. And enjoy the recovery week!

I have to take a time out from training, but don't think that means I won't be checking on everyone! Keep up the good work!

Agreed - I just had to buy all new pants because I've dropped from a 36 waist about 8 months ago to 32's.  Woo hoo!  Still can't fit in to the regulars though...too much glute and quad muscle!  I need the relaxed fit!  This is a good problem to have!  Definitely don't mind buying smaller pants every now and again...

How is everyone's training going? Mine is suspended indefinitely. I'm not feeling well and am officially banned from running, but I can bike on the trainers or swim. Has anyone guessed yet? No tris for me this season....I'm sidelined.

My poor, sad, new-to-me bike.

This is a total surprise to us. BELIEVE ME. A girl does not get a new bike with something like this in the plans. I have a history of miscarriage, though, so I am being monitored already (blood testing and ultrasound) and we are just crossing our fingers. Did I mention I'm banned from running???? SIGH. I was so close to breaking a ten minute mile regularly.

Congratulations Anne!!!!!!!  What a better reason to be sidelined?  You will have your own personal tri going on (TRI-mesters).  I am very excited for you and your family.  Make sure you sideline.  NO RUNNING!!!! Who cares about the 10 minute thing?  Your children are your greatest accomplishment not some time barrier.  I am so happy for you!!!

That's awesome Anne!  I was worried when you said you had an unplanned week off.  Glad it was for a good thing!

Swimming and biking is great.  (I'm really starting to think this whole running thing was over rated    I'm ready for training to be over!

Congratulations!  That's great news!  Just look at it this way...In a few more years, your family will have one more age group covered!  Better chances for hardware coming home from races!

Ginny, I love the swim/bike/run combo. Can't be beat. I think you might like tris better than the long distancy running races....but, are you getting excited for your first half??? I truly admire that you are doing that (and have put so much time into training your body for it).

I managed to do a nice, slow bike on the trainers today. I'm still waiting on official word for what I can do exercise-wise. My body can't go from exercising 6 days a week for over a year to doing nothing. Although that is tempting....

Hope everyone is having a good week and your weather is decent. At least with the cooler Spring temps everyone can run outside some more!

Jeff- we miss you!

Jeff, good to see you back.

I thought I was the only one who referred to my kids as spawn. My daughter did the same thing, the day before her first day of middle school.  (daughter, pre-teen, self-esteem, you get the picture).  She is now in 11th grade and just did a whitening procedure, so now she has to have the bonding work redone so they match.  I give up too.

Just got back from my lunch time run and had a 'remember when' thought.  I started running last summer with the c25k program.  The first time I ran 20 minutes straight, I thougth that I was going to leave a lung in the street.  Today I get back from a "short and quick" 4 mile run and have barely broken a sweat.  I was really just trying to keep my legs loose for tomorrows 11 miler.  I rode on my trainer pretty hard last night and didn't want my legs to get stiff or sore...

Sweeeeet.

Matt- isn't that feeling fantastic??? I had a conversation with one of my nurses this week and told her I was hoping to still fit in some short runs (2.5 miles). I remember this time last year a mile seemed like FOREVER and 3.1 miles seemed insane. Congrats! And have a great run today.

Jeff, I'll get to your logs. This is our oldest daughter's big birthday weekend. She turns 7 on April 1st, so last night we hosted a Mystery Party for 8 screaming first graders. I'm still amazed that everyone survived and we didn't just follow Mike's plan of locking them all up in the playroom and telling them the mystery was how to unlock the door from the inside.

Jo, I'm still laughing about your comment on me still doing tris...as in trimesters. I am not a good pregnant lady...my first trimester I'm high risk. Second trimester goes prettywell, then I'm in and out of labor for most of the third trimester.

Plus I have to admit I'm still a little mad about having a new bike, and one race paid for, and not being able to race. My goal is to maintain my bike and swim levels as much as possible so I can race next summer (the baby would be six months old). We'll see. Maybe our Surprise Baby will be a sleeper and I'll be able to train and not be exhausted.

Ginny, still enjoying the biking and swimming? Gator, you still with us?

I'll check logs later this weekend when we get a break from houseguests and birthday celebrations. Everyone have a great weekend!

Still plugging along on my 1/2 training.  Just a little more than a month away.

Did  9.3 miles at race pace Sunday.  Was able to hold just below 10 mm, which is what I'm hoping for on the half.  If I can do that my time should be just under 2:10.  I was really happy with myself for running that far for that long.  The furthest I have ever held that pace has been a 10K and that was in the fall.  Really looking forward to getting this race behind me and being able to put more time into other things like strength and swimming.
