Hi all,
Race was fantastic today. My goal was 2:50:00, but my dad said "I think 3 hours is more realistic". When I felt that 2:50:00 was in reach, I gunned it and got in at 2:46:04.
The weather was horrible though. At least it didn't rain while I was on the bike. Race report is up....somewhere. Somehow, my run leg was my best overall, but my bike was the best in my age group.

Now for a couple of weeks off, before I get stuck into the half mary training. After that, it'll be a few months off to prepare for next season.

Thanks for all the support team over the last few months. It's been really great.

What does HR play?  Is my max higher than yours(genetics) or did my lactate test tell what data to use?

Why did you move your TP and RP zones down 5 beats?

I may have missed this on the previous posts, but, is the format of these results the standard for VO2Max tests? Do they all give you the amount of fat and carbs being used at the different heart rates? Is that simply a calculation based on the VO2Max figure/heart rate/body stats? -or is this why the blood samples are taken?
thanks!

What's with the new format? I logged on and was like "ok, that's different". How's everyone's training going.

With respect to the VO2max question, you can determine amount of carbs v fat being burnt by calculating the volume of oxygen expired vs the volume of carbon dioxide being expired. It doesn't tell you that automatically, but it's easy enough to work out.

Great job on the race, Stuart! I've been behind in my emails lately, so sorry this congrats is a bit late. That's okay that you didn't stick to your plan. A goal is just that. You try to push yourself a little harder than you are comfortable and see how close you make it. The key is to not beat yourself up and just remember that we do all this stuff because we love it.

I was just in the Dells for a family thing and actually got back into the water! No, I didn't melt. Whew! It's been a REALLY long time since I managed a swim and the good news is I didn't forget how. I even outlasted the other chick who got up at the crack of dawn for the lap swim before the pool got way too crowded with kids. My swimsuit sort of fits but I'm worried about the wetsuit. Haven't managed to squeeze into it for fear the baby fat will impede said objective. Mom fed us way too much. (yes, it's all her fault) So, now I've got to start logging my calories again. It keeps me honest.

How is the baby Bama?? Mine is teething or something and isn't giving me any sleep. Fortunately, exercise helps in sleep deprivation situations.

Who's race is next?

He's doing well.  He like to sleep with pops at night.

Aaron raced IM Cali 70.3 yesterday and was like 5 hours and a few seconds.

VCO2/Vo2

v=volume expired in the minute.

were you hooked up to a gas chamber to measure your expired air? if not, i'm not sure how he calculated it.

dividing o2 by co2 gives you your "respiratory exchange ration" RER, or respiratory quotient, Q (two different things, but have the same value). a value of 0.7 means you are burning 100% fat, 0% carb (ie rest), while a value of 1.1 means 100% carb, 0% fat. Anything in between is a proportion of each.

qslye--Wow! You have done what I dream to do some day! I won't be finishing with nine minute miles though--I'm way too slow. What would you different next time if anything? Did you have fun? I did a half marathon and this old guy ran with me and kept me going. He gave me lots of parenting advice like "keep them guessing, surprise them so they never know what you will do. If you stay unpredictable, they are less likely as teenagers to manipulate you." It's really good advice! He had run marathons since he was in college and later sent me a card with pics of him running track as a young man and one of his latest marathon, which was just one week after the one I was at. It is something I will treasure, because it made the running so much more fun and interesting. At one point we had to go different routes as he was doing the full and I was doing the half, and those last miles I sort of fell apart with my pace and started to notice my little aches and pains, etc. I will try to pass it on someday and keep someone company when I am older and wiser and have a few marathons under my belt.

And Aaron-- you aren't even human. Geesh. Does kryptonite slow you down or what? Same question for you--what did you most enjoy about the experience??

Bama--Phoebe sleeps with us for about half the night yet. When she's 20 we'll get her her own bed. I got her a cute little red swimsuit, but she doesn't like water much...oh well, maybe she'll just have to stick to biking in the trailer with us and sit with daddy while I swim. She broke out in a rash from the chlorine we think. Some folks just throw their kids in the pool and teach them to swim as infants that way, but I am too chicken to try it.

Hi team. Hope all the training is going well. The signup for my half marathon opened today, so I had a look at the race map. Then I used the route planner see how far 21km's is. HOLY CRAP IT'S A LONG WAY!. For me at least; my longest run has been only about 15 or 16k's. Oh well. I've got 12 weeks to get there.

Good luck to all for upcoming races! Keep up the good work.

Also, I don't like the new layout. I can't change my goals and the table in the goals section is retarded, even though I haven't changed anything

That's a lot of hours I see.. Good stuff!

Training has been going well. Time has been flying by and now the countdown has started. I'm trying to finish the next couple of weeks strong and then ease into the race with the taper. We'll see how it goes..!

The countdown has started for me as well. My sprint tri is in June and my (gasp!) 25th class reunion is in July. I haven't been back at all as the folks I went to high school with were all jerks. I was NOT athletic at all back then. And so my goal is to go back looking and feeling like a triathlete. You see, the dude that is in charge of sending out all the reunion letters was the very same dude who called me a hippo in third grade (of course, he was gorgeous, smart, and extremely athletic). I guess any motivation to get the lead out is good, right?

My fitness is creeping back s-l-o-w-l-y. Did you all know that when you work out, even a little bit at a time, you eventually get more strength and stamina? Amazing.

What motivated you guys to start triathlon? Were you always athletic? Who is your inspiration? I might be strange, but Rocky always makes me motivated. Adrian...it hurts!!

Wow nearly a month since anyone has posted! Where are you all. I'm only in run training, not tri-training so I have an excuse! I did my longest run every last week (1:52:30 - 19.5km) but I have strained my left hip flexor, and it still isn't right almost two weeks later. I'm not doing a long run this week because of it. My half marathon is 6 weeks away on Sunday, but I haven't entered yet.

What motivated me to start triathlon? I asked my friend at uni if he wanted to do a tri, and he said yes so we did.
Have I always been athletic? I've always been into sport, but have never been the best at anything.
Who is my inspiration? I can't say that I think of anyone when I go out and train, but whenever I see people who are disadvantaged in some way (physically) that always impresses me and I strive to improve.

Keep up the training everyone!

Hey Stuart! Congratulations on your long run. Sorry to hear about your injury. Six weeks may be enough time to heal up but I imagine your body will tell you if you can do the half when the time comes. I have a hamstring that tells me when I've done more than my body wishes me to and it was injured 2 years ago.

I am at a place now where I realize I may not be ready for my sprint tri in June and I'm okay with that. It is just not my top priority now--my baby and family take first place followed closely by self employment obligations and there really isn't much time or energy left for me. This won't always be the case so I guess I am learning patience. We go on family walks or short bike rides when we can but I haven't been in a pool enough and I haven't been doing long enough workouts. I am slow, so I need to plan for my time to be about 2.5 hours and so far my training is 1.5 hours at a time. I could make myself do the tri, but it wouldn't be my best effort. So I'll decide for sure when the time comes.

Is anyone else in a bit of a training slump?
