Lisa - WTG!  sounds like you are starting the year off on the right foot for sure   we'll enjoy hearing about your progress

Yanti - tracking outgoing money sounds like a resolution i should try as well

Rebecca - thanks for the tips and i hope you get to feeling better soon! and congrats in the swim

Melyssa - sorry your year has gotten off to a rough start, hopefully it will turn around - hope the baby feels better!

Lynne - you crack me up!  glad you're feeling better!  i think an IM goal for 2012 would be awesome - you can totally do it!

Lynn - i'm jealous that you get to train outdoors and it's nice - it's been sooo cold here BRRR

Marcea - good to hear from you! you have plenty of time to get ready for running 3 miles in June

i'm still plugging along - the new year has gotten off to a good start, nothing specatular one way or another

Dyou guys have any ideas on how to estimate distance and/or speed while on rollers? Would a cheap bike computer provide a decent estimate?

okay... totally demoralised by swim training with tri group this morning!  first open water swim, managed to hire a wetsuit and organise babysitter and get there.. I had sort of assumed swimming was my best (least bad??!) bit, but today soon cleared up that misconception for me!
The water was cold, i think about 10 degrees (50 farenheit) and I had borrowed goggles that didn't quite fit,so filled with water so the sighting I had learned yesterday was pretty much ineffective, and the cold and choppiness was incredibly exhausting... everyone else seemed to be a stronger swimmer than me today.  to be fair I haven't been doing ANY swimming... I thought 300m didn't seem very far, but it looks like a long way in the open COLD COLD water.
I'm definitely going to have to schedule in some swimming training time.. but it's completely different from the heated light pool out in the cold choppy dark water with people churning and splashing all around you!
still at least I didn't get eaten by anything... and I'm pretty impressed I was even out there doing it, even if I was the last out of the water today...

kia kaha everyone

oh and I forgot to mention that it's supposed to be the middle of summer here!!! but we're so far south that the ocean temp doesn't shift much... and it even hailed and sleeted today - must be climate change?
baby is over the pox but now my son has had it for a week.  Still I'm hoping to return to work tomorrow (this translates as having childfree time to train and get a coffee in peace)

Do others find that training makes them really hungry?  I feel like I'm always hungry and eating huge amounts.  (I am still feeding a baby also).   I could probably drop ten pounds more to go faster, but i find it hard to be motivated because i like food and I always rationalise that i have a normal BMI..
motivate me?!!

hope everyone is well

Mia--all your training sounds great, like you're really getting fit. I find it hard to get into a morning routine, too, I have to do it bit by bit, like an hour earlier every day ... or bribe myself with a breakfast cereal I really like!

Oh by the way, my Swedish friend here saw me eating some pea soup last Thursday and he said it reminded him of home--it's a tradition to eat yellow pea soup on Thursdays. Really? Do you know about this? I'm very curious!

Rebecca--yep, cheap-o bike computer will do fine and it's a super tool to have, anyway.

Melyssa--SUPER JOB on getting in the water. That is COLD, COLD, COLD and you did great. It's very hard to be the last in the group, but frankly, most people wouldn't even DREAM of getting in. It really only does get better from here on out!

Uh, yes, tri training famishes me. (And swimming most of all). And for goodness sake you are still feeding a LITTLE 'UN. Eat away, good doc, eat away. Make good filling healthy choices and spoil yourself once in a while as you like to.   I wouldn't worry unless you are consistently gaining weight without getting firmer/faster.

Bethie Love--glad to hear the year is off to a peaceful start! This is a year of new balance for us, of more harmony with ourselves and those we choose to have around us, than ever before. I feel it! We are each other's luck, I think.

Yes Thursdays and yellow pea soup is a tradition in Sweden. There is supposed to be bits of bacon (or fläsk as we say in Sweden) in the soup and we eat it with some mustard on the rim of the plate/bowl.
After the soup there is pancakes (Swedish pancakes, like crepe, thin) with raspberry or strawberry jam and whipped cream.
So it is almost in all lunch resturants that you can find this every Thursday.

I did some bikeing yesterday, about 10 miles (30 min) and then some walking and running on the treadmill (1% incline) for about 2 miles (20 min) and then 10 min rowing and then 15 min arc-trainer 0,5 miles.
And it felt good.
To run and walk after biking feels good, I am starting to see how it will feel in a race.

Hello Everyone! Just saw Yanti's post and saw where it reads "champion" under her name. Fitting, no?

Amazing cold, cold swim Doc. I'm impressed. The coldest I've swam in (with a wetsuit) is 60 and my lips couldn't move to speak for about 20 minutes after. I just read a bit about cold water swimming that advises drinking warm drinks before swimming to warm your inner temp. Then, I figure when it comes out it will warm you then, too!

I do have a question about when to start my OWS sessions. Yanti? Beth? Anyone? I'm used to swimming OW, but have just been pool swimming lately. My HIM is 12 weeks (or so) out. When would you recommend adding in the OWS swim session(s)? I usually use those for practice sighting and my endurance, distance swims. Thanks.

Happy Sunday (at least it's Sunday here in CA)

Lynn

FIFTY DEGREE water?! da-mn woman, you are tougher than I am!

I have been hungry constantly since I started training. I remember an old thread "You know you're a triathlete when..." and one of the responses was "You have enough food in your desk at work to feed your entire office, or yourself."

i'm going to leave this up to her 'yantiness' to answer - being a girl from the midwest (and not yet having an 1/2 IM under my belt), i have lots of pool and lake experience, but not true OWS like you are looking at

seems to me (if i had to guess), it would be good to be getting in the open water at least 4 weeks before your event - get comfortable with the sighting and the water - and of course be safe - swim with someone else or someone sighting for you (it's the old life guard in me )

Awww, you're so sweet!

For Oceanside? As soon as you can tolerate the temperature, frankly. If it's a major hardship for you to get the OWS in, then three (minimum) before the race. I know I'm just guessing here, but this is based on my own swim training in essentially the same waters and then having done that race. The swim is deceptive. It's COLD and you do not get a chance to get used to the water or warm up. The more you can get your body used to getting into cold water and going, the better.

And on that short loop that's outside the harbor, you may get major swells. (Or not. But better to be prepared for a moving sea).

Here are some tips for Oceanside--I'll add more if I think of them!

- wear SOCKS on your hands while waiting in line for the swim and bring OLD SHOES to wear covering your feet. You can discard the items on the boat ramp before you go in. You will be grateful for this tip above all others.
- stay on the OUTSIDE during the swim. If you're not Front of Pack, no matter how fast you are, you will be fighting for space.
- step ONLY on the RED CARPET when you exit the swim. Do NOT step on any exposed part of the boat ramp.
- go MUCH slower than you think you need to on the first half of the bike. If you get into the hills and THEN feel like hammering, go nuts. Besides, there's always 13.1 left if you have lots of energy remaining
- If they have the sand part of the run this year, it may add up to a full mile of running on sand. You may want to occasionally take a short part of a run on sand to build up the ankle stability and get used to the feeling.

Thanks so much for the tips Yanti. That water is cold. I'll be getting my arse to the cove for swimmies soon, promise.

I cut and pasted your tips into a word doc for reference as the race gets closer. I'll start holding back old shoes now to wear down there.

Champion-Melon Presser....I like it. there are very few who could pull that name off, maybe only one.

Hi everybody!

Well, I'm back. The last week was a mess. Between work, home repair (plumbing, I hate plumbing. Trust me, you don't want the details) and the last of my family Christmas get togethers, I didn't have any time to breath, let alone train. The good news is it is over and I just got finished with an hour on the trainer. I feel a little better now.

I'll catch up with everything tomorrow. Have a good day!

Poor Lynne!

Being sick is miserable and it's even harder when the mind games set in. PANTS, I say!

Really get your rest and heal well, though ... it's even worse to carry on half-sick for much longer periods of time.

I think I need a new seat on my bike. It's an 11-year-old bike, the seat is original, and it doesn't adjust. At all. I got tools and tried. It comes off the bike, and it goes back on the bike. That's it.

Time to start saving up. I shouldn't have to pick between my bike and my sex life.
