aquagirl - 2009-12-22 12:12 AM Hey Suzie !
Glad I am not the only one awake!
What manuscripts?

Oh...nothing too exciting or earth shattering.  I am working on submissions dealing with hammer throw technique.

Meaning? Now I am intrigued. Hence the avatar??

Seriously,, spill it.. that sounds so cool... I"d love to go to Home Depot, pick up a bunch of Hammers and just start throwing them at stuff, like all those cool light displays,  or even randomly walk around throwing a hammer or two then claiming I'm Thor

Gary, unless you are willing to toss a seldge hammer around Home Depot, it wouldn't be worth it.  Hammer throw is a field event where they basically throw a shot put attached to a cable with a hanlde that is the weight of a bowling ballroughly 65-75m (220-250 feet).  The first pic is my friend Adriene throwing the long handled hammer.  Adriene threw shot competitively.

The next pictures are of my friends Loree and Amber.  They both have thrown the hammer competiviely for 10 years plus. I fell in to this while I was in grad school.  It's a lot of fun.  It's a lot of hard work but I don't mind.  So, it's nothing really earth shattering but it's a break from the other stuff I do.

And the last is my buddy AG.  He's an awesome guy.

So. Cool.

 ditto.

that is so awesome,,

waay off beat question-- I always wondered when I was in school, why the hammer throw, discus people would spin in a circle, but the shotput people didn't ... The best I could figure out was centripical force since they are either at the end of something, either the arm or rope thingie.  and the shot put was more like a straight line.    In the past few years I even see the shot putters doing a spin.

Bopper - I am nowhere near the athlete most of y'all are.  I averaged about a 9 mm pace.  yesterday was no workout (just didn't work out) but today took a long lunch and did 2.5 mile run, followed by 6.3 bike, followed by 1.0 mile run.  All on machines, but all fun and very sweaty.  clothes were heavy at the end of lunch.

Merry Christmas folks.

enders_shadow - 2009-12-22 4:16 PM I have bike envy. I'm on my first bike - a WSD Specialized (Baby)...we bought it ~4 years ago when we moved out of the city and I finally had somewhere to ride. (We live 1 mile from horse country now - great riding.) I'd love to get another one some day, but first must convince hubby that the bike would be a good "mistress"...what is it when women have a 2nd lover? A mister? That doesn't sound right. Baby is purple though. I love purple.

I fondly refer to my P2 as sexy girl........cause she is...........we are having a torrid affair...........

I'd be elated if I were running 9mm. I used to run close to 8mm but that was long ago (30 years). I hope to get there again but now I'm between 12 and 13mm but that is better then the 15-16 mm I was doing this past summer.

gojogo - 2009-12-22 7:29 PM My last post was supposed to be connected to Garryy's reply to Mojo11's swim stuff.  I may need some Tech help Bopper.

Hope eveyone had a great Tuesday.  Went snowboarding today for a couple of hours.  It was great to be outside.

Hey Kelly... here's my techy help. I think you pressed the "reply" button at the top of the post you wanted to respond to. If you want the original message to be in your message you must click on the "quote" button.

You will then have the original message in your reply with a couple meta tags at either end (the word QUOTE in square brackets at the beginning, and /QUOTE in square brackets at the end. Either put your response before or after those tags. You can also add more tags in the message to respond to various parts... but that's a little more complex. If you want a lesson on that I'll give it another time.

Hope that helped?!

Yep, that's it
Thanks

Love the hammer pics, very intense looks on their faces.

Nice job everyone on getting in a some type of workout.  I agree with Mav, 'me time' is much needed to keep my sanity.

Yoga and a massage for me today.

Decorating the tree and making cookies tomorrow.

Uh... I'd say that very good actually,   I think everyone falls into the trap of thinking that they are not as good as others. While it's true that there will always be someone stronger, faster, younger {fill in the blank with anything}.   When you compare yourself to others in that way you will always lose, Take pride & celebrate in what you are doing, your milestones & achievements.

I need to apologize for not being around much... There are those "things" called "life" and "work" that keep getting in the way...   I will certainly catch up once the holidays are over.

I haven't trained at all this week, except for those loooong walks with my dog.  It's been a busy week on the personal and work fronts.  As for my foot injury, I got myself the Strassburg sock and it has worked wonders for me thus far.  I think I will be able to kick off that run challenge on cue with the rest of my teammates on January 1st.

On this note, Macha the Dog and yours truly would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a New Year filled with happiness, laughter, peace, love, health and prosperity!

Travel safe everyone! I will hit the road early tomorrow morning for a 10 hour drive so that I can spend the holidays with my family.  I hope to make it on time for dinner!

Well said! The way I see it EVERYBODY is  striving to do their best and improve ....and no matter how "fast" you are there will always be someone faster. Unless of course you are Chrissie Wellington !!

Triathlon's are about improving yourself... and the ONLY benchmark that counts is your own. If 10min miles are what you are your goals... then doing 9.9 m/m is FAST... ANYthing less then the norm is fast.

One thing you should remember tho'... getting fast is a VERY slow process. I know guys who run for years at the same pace... building their mileage and ability to run for 2-3 years before they even think about adding speed. Your body is  a marvelous machine, but it does take time to adapt to new situations. Take it slow... enjoy the ability to run... never take that for granted. If you do everything by the book for your body, you'll be able to enjoy running for many, many years.

Caveat.... this is coming from a guy who DIDN'T follow the rules and is paying the consequences now. Injuries SUCK!!!!

I am in agreement with all previous posts.

I find my pace doesn't start to drop until I am consistently running 30-35 miles per week with the longest run being in the 8-10 mile range.  But, it takes time to get to those higher levels.

One thing I think we forgot too many times is that we are all very unqiue individuals: structurally, physiologically, mentally, etc. We compare ourselves to each other. We use what has worked for others in training and racing. We expect those to work as well for us. And, when we don't have the success they did, we misconstrue that as failure and become frustrated.  The thing to go back to is that unqiueness that is you. Remember training that works for another may not work for you.  Tweaking those things to fit you will bring much better success.  And, redefining what success and winning are, is important.

Hey Group!!! Hope everyone is getting ready for the Holiday and getting all those last minute errands done. I was a total sloth yesterday and didn't do a thing other than work my shift. Another two deputies were shot Monday night so everyone is kinda edgy!!
Working today and looking forward to the bright shiny faces tomorrow!!
My two cents for what it's worth. When you're out there training or racing it's always you against you!! You can use other people as motivation but in the end it's your decision on whether you hold the pace, kick it up, or throw in the towel.
I hope everyone one has a happy and safe Holiday and that you get to spend some time with the ones you love!!

Thank you all so much for this reminder. I feel slow at everything, and find that the few  times I dont enjoy SBR'ing is when I am straining to reach a level probably before I should.

My dear sister was stricken with Transverse Myelitis out of nowhere five years ago, rendering her unable to walk. I am hyperconscious  and appreciates of my ability to SBR, however STILL find myself taking it for granted or beating myself up for not being at a certain speed. It's a privilege!

Enjoy the holiday, everyone. I am going home soon to cook and wrap and drink and be merry with my loved ones.
