i think no money would be a more pressing problem. The gym has a 15 m pool ... :|
We have a 100 m outdoor pool in the summer though, which is great for practising in a wetsuit!
Juts working on running and cycling at the moment.

I assume these "internal" challenges are not limited to swimming...

The East might beat us because the West is too busy getting injured trying to beat themselves...LOL

Ha... thats why I've been swimming so much the last three months.  I got injured training for the Big Sur Marathon.  I had to cut out running for almost a month and reduce my cycling.  So, that left the pool for me.  All in all, I think the injury has helped me.  With lessons and a lot more pool time, I've become a much better swimmer.

wouldn't that be ironic...

I fully intend to reach my other goals as well.

I'm planning on joining a spin class this evening.  I also have a 50 mile bike ride scheduled on the 14th.

I always wanted to try a spin class.  Seems like a nice way to make an hour or so go by faster.  I don't know if I would totally be into the whole "routine" that they do, but grinding it out with others is always better than solo.

We actually have a triathlon spin class at my YMCA...not sure what it's all about, but I want to give it a try.

I love spin classes , but it is SO SO SO dependant on the instructor. We used to have a brilliant instructor and the room was a room with like disco lights and stuff, and very supportive. Sometimes though you get like someone covering a spin lesson and its like a school PE class where they take the and shout pretty much abuse at you.

Its always worth trying it once see if you like it, i mean you set your own pace really. Just remember, no free wheeling, you must always hvae some resistance on teh wheel or you'll knacker your knees.

That sounds just like my off season.  I didn't run hardly at all for two months.  Hit the pool 5 days a week instead.  It seems to have paid off.

I hear you on the no money issue.  I hardly did any swimming until I got a scholarship at the YMCA.  It has a 25 yard pool and there are always at least 2 lanes available for lap swimming.

Now that you topped 5,000, here's the next step.  Found this workout posted by Kalyn Keller:

Warm-Up
300 easy free
900 - (300 kick/300 pull/ 300 swim)

Kick Set
3 x 100 @ 1:50 descend (each 100 is faster than the previous one)
4 x 25 @ :40 sprint kick
3 x 100 @ 1:40 descend
4 x 25 @ :40 sprint kick
3 x 100 @ 1:30 descend
4 x 25 @ :40 sprint kick

Stroke-Specific Set
20 x 50's:
1 - drill @ 1:00
2 - build @ :45 (get faster throughout each interval)
1 - strong (90 percent effort) @ :45
1 - easy @ 1:00
(repeat through four times, varying strokes)

Main Set
15 x 300 (one minute rest between sets)
3 @ 3:30
3 @ 3:25 (pull)
3 @ 3:20
3 @ 3:15 (pull)
3 @ 3:10

300 Easy

TOTAL: 8,200 yards

Hmmm... Let me split it into two days and I might have a chance at completing it.  Look at the interval times for the 300s after all the other yardage.  CRAZY!

I think I could pull it off...if the rest interval was 1 day.  Wait...nevermind...I can't swim a 3:30 300.

Sweet.  Mine was in yards.

I think getting to 4K was the hardest part.  Once I got there...then I just cruised the last 1000...just trying to smooth out the stroke...and taking my sweet old time

Got my swim in last night.  Things going good on my goals so far.  My back is tightening up a little though.  Mostly lower right side.  Any suggestions for stretches/exercises that will help?

Wow.  All these people doing sooo much swimming.  Makes my workout look pretty lame.  I've never been a swimmer and never been able to do more then a length of a pool at a time until this last year or so.  Maybe some day when I grow up I'll be able to swim like you guys.  I'll just sit back and watch the competition.

We're getting behind on our posting competition. East is ahead by 40 posts. We need to get going again.

Hey... Where did Bill go? Haven't seen much of him today. No wonder our post count is low.

Ha ha ha!!!  Knacker your knees!!!!  That cracks me up!!!!  I'm gonna use that phrase!!!

Myself and Yanti are both Spinning instructors.  Try going to several different classes with different instructors.  Ask yourself this simple question at each class.......

Would I do this outside on my real bike?

If your answer is yes, then keep going to that class.  If your answer is no, then run away as fast as you can and don't go back to that class.
