tri808 - 2010-04-09 12:47 PM Question for the group...

Do you take any vitamins/supplements on a consistant basis.

I take the GNC mega man multi-vitamin and glucosamine.  Once in a while I'll buy some protein powder to make shakes that act more as meal replacements so I can have something immediately after a workout...but haven't done that in a while.

A store brand multi-vitamin when i remember.  Not because I feel I really need it, but because its relatively cheap and can't hurt.  My roommate and I have gotten in the habit of splurging at Sams for whatever supplement looks most awesome.  We've tried fish oil, ginko biloba, flax seed with fiber, glucosamine (he thought his knee hurt...).  Needless to say, I've not been a repeat customer of anything yet (though we're on the flax/fiber now, and I'm not sure, but the ole GI track is feeling good).  We also get the protein powder and sometimes bars.  I do like them because who has the time to make a meal/snack all the time?  A protein shake/bar is better than a soda or candy bar in my book, and when I'm not done working out until 8 or 9, cooking  a real meal is just not a possibility.

I don't think there is anything wrong with trying something if you're curious, but just keep it mind if you don't feel like anything has changed, it probaby hasn't.  The science guy in me is a firm believer in the placebo effect though, so if it makes you feel good/positive whatever, and that leads to good/more positive workouts, keep doing it!  Thats much the same reason I like my calf sleeve compression dealies for recovery.

I finally took some pictures of my new ride!  Please excuse my photography skills.  They are nothing compared to David's.  The thread is in TriTalk!  There are quite a few pictures so I figured that I wouldn't blow up this thread.

I'm probably really going to jinx myself here, but here goes.  I started taking a multivitamin every time that I cannot get the nutrients through food that I need and I haven't been sick since.  The company is millenium nutrition.  I bought this one because they are well known for their bioavailability.  I also take fish oil, but have been for a long time.  And eating the building blocks to protien is always a good idea. Period.

I have tried everything from condroitin to flax seeds to ALA.  Not much change except for the multi and fish oil.  If you have a balanced diet, you'll be all set.  Unless you are naturally deficient in something...which is sometimes the case.

Nice work carl...I'm a big fan of that bike.  I wanted it as well, but was just out of my fit range.

Dan thanks for the list - that will be very helpful when I get a chance to put everyone in as friends!

I will be out of the picture for the next week or so.  Have a trip to D.C. and will have limited access/time to a computer.
I am hoping to get a few runs in - I am staying in the Georgetown area near the University and I hear it is a really cool place.  Also, hope to run the mall - looks like fun.

Good luck to all who have races planned this week and next! I hope to read your race reports when I get a chance.

Cheers! Robin

When I remeber I take a multivitamin and an omega 3 supplement (either fish oil or flaxseed).  I am also trying to dring a glass of milk after my workouts for the extra calcium and protein. Also, the occasional bar when I am in a hurry and need something fast.

I'm oogling over the B16 or the P2 right now.  But for now it's all about engine upgrades...aka...training.

Oh man...any excuse to drink chocolate milk, count me in.  I can't do the chocolate at night (after 8) because it'll keep me up.

I take the same mega multi-vitamin as mentioned above (GNC).  I also take whey protein after a good training session.  I'm thinking of adding fish oil, after watching the latest article linked on the BT site.

Other than that......nothing.

As my training volume increases, I'm finding that it's harder for me to find time to add more training.  I run about 4-5x per week, bike 3x and swim 3x a week.  So already that's like 11 workouts a week.  I really want to up my bike volume, as I think it's an area where I can see the most immediate gains.  I normally do my LR Sunday mornings...would it make sense to just go out for an afternoon spin at easy effort just to log a few more miles on the bike...or am I better off just resting.  I don't feel totally wiped out after my LRs, and I know I could do an easy 1 hour spin...but I'm still trying to grasp the balance of reaping benefits from recovery vs. reaping benefits from additional workouts.

ETA:  Monday is usually my easy day...where I only swim masters...no running or biking.  Every other day of the week I'm either running and or biking.

I would consider cutting back my running to 3-4x per week, but I want to keep my running base around 25-30 mpw so I can transition into marathon training much easier after tri season is over.

Thanks.

Both are beautiful bikes.  The P2 is my dream bike but the B16 was easier on my wallet.  But I don't regret the B16 one bit!

I got an '09 P2C used over the winter   Risky buying a used bike, but its has (fingers crossed) worked out lovely.  I was basically waiting til I saw a used P2C or Felt in my price range to jump on, so it could have gone either way really.

My plan has me doing little gear EZ spins for an hour or two after hard runs or the day after hard bricks, so I have to imagine its a good thing.  They are super boring, but I feel good the day after.

some good stuff posted so far. Just so everyone knows, I don't have inet during the day unless I stop in somewhere that has a hot spot, so my posts come earlier in the day or late in the evening. I'll be active posting, just not as much as others.

Same here, I'm on the road most of the day too.

I've got a P2C and love it.  It was a gift from the insurance company of the 94 y/o lady that sent me to the hospital last year.

I would say the intensity of the other rides are moderate to high.  My tuesday/thursday rides are just on a long 2 mile stretch of road that many cyclists use since there is very little car traffic.  So a lot of times I'll do intervals, or steady state moderate intensity.  Saturday I do a group ride...and depending how the group goes, I'm usually pretty tired by the end of it.

So if I did do an additional ride after my LR...it would be at a much lower intensity...partly to loosen up the muscles...partly to just accumulate more miles.

Wow!! What a wealth of information and experience.  This is great!

So after a complete rest day yesterday and sleeping 10 hours last night I feel ready for a run and bike this evening after work.   My new running plan is to just run at a comfy pace for 45 mins to 1 hour until I can build up a base mileage.

I have a question about everyone's sleeping.  I find that I'm need at least 9 hours of sleep every night to feel fully rested.  Is this normal due to all the training?  I find it hard to always get that much, but if I only get 7-8 I'm tired by the end of the day.

I try to get a minimum of 7 hours...I find that is enough to "get me through" the day.  But if given the chance...8-9 hours is my sweet spot.  10 hours and I start to feel sluggish and lazy...unless I had sleep deprivation the day before.

X2 on the 7 hours. but If I can I try to get 8.

if I sleep any less than that I dont go too hard on the training.

x2

I usually have an early morning Wednesday swim where I usually go to bed pretty late Tuesday night.  The only reason I make it through the day is because I don't have many classes on Wednesday so I have a few opportunities to nap throughout the day.
