I use the Garmin GPS/HR monitor for both running and cycling. 305/HR strap here also. i use it almost religiously, but i find it uncomfortable to wear for more than about 10k. i have a habit of thinking im working harder than i really am. my RPE is almost always high. speaking of, have any of you ever worn one while swimming? i havent researched to find out if the unit will work in the water. |

Hand built MTB wheels : DT 240 hubs with ceramic upgrades, DT Aerolite spokes, and DT XR400 hoops. The scale reads 801 grams rear and 694 grams front for a total of 1495! Congrats on the nice wheels! what is your race bike? What's it weight ready to go? Are you doing Sea Otter this weekend (I see it's in your training log race list)? |

I'm hoping to build a hardtail real soon that would easily be under 20 pounds. Yep on the Sea Otter. I'll be heading out tomorrow morning. The family and I will be staying until Saturday afternoon. It's a great event if you haven't been. I believe it is the bigggest event on the West Coast. Lots of activities and races for the kids. I want to take the kids to see Ryan Leech this year. The guy is frickin' amazing. I'm not expecting much as far as times this year though. I'm still coming off my injury and my bike volume has been low. I'm going to be shooting for a sub 1:35 time. We'll see what happens though! I'll try to take a bunch a pics to post. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I had to do my stress EKG for work this morning. According to the cardiologist, I had significant improvement over my previous test two years ago. I actually never even hit my lactate threshold before he stopped the test. Its nice to get concrete evidence that your training is paying off! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Taken from JorgeM, Personal Best MultiSport Training:WU: 15 min easy warm up MS: 30 min all out test CD: 5' min easy warm down Total time 50 min The 30 minute Bike Time Trail Test: Remember that the goal of the test is for you to ride as fast as possible but at a pace which allows you to complete the entire 30 min test. Start the test and start recording your heart rate for the entire test. The average test is what you’ll use to calculate your Lactate Threshold Heart Rate. It is very important that you should finish knowing you gave it everything you had. Make sure your trainer is properly set up; you have a fan or something to cool you down, enough fluids and a towel. Calculate your Lactate Threshold Heart Rate – take the average heart rate for the test and multiply it by 97% and the results will be your estimated LTHR Example: Jorge’s 30 min avg HR: 178 hence LTHR = 178 * .97 = 173 |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LTHR for running: Warm up: 10 min easy jog Time Trial: 30 min full effort Warm down: 10 minute jog This is basically your 5k race pace. You need to find an all out pace that you can hold for thirty minutes without decelerating. However, you don't start recording your heart rate until after ten minutes into the time trial. Its the last twenty minutes of the time trial that we are concerned about. So, you start your heart rate monitor 10 minutes into the time trial and stop it at the end of the thirty minutes. The average HR over this 20 minutes is your LTHR. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ^^ i can see myself going into burnout on those tests :D did my first swim today. love the wetsuit. hate the actual swimming. it was a very humbling experience. even moreso than i had anticipated. i can hardly swim 50 yds w/o being winded to the point where i need to grab some wall. i have got some major work ahead of me on this! |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() No wet suit yet. I have a Garmin 305 w/HRM and use it in training and races. I set my zones up by LT using my HR from a 5K I did back in February. I just use the HR to track long term progress and see if my PE matches my True effort by HR. The GPS is all that and a Peanutbutter Sandwhich though. I love the fredom to just run new routs and know how far I'm going. It was also great in the race cause you know exactly how far you have to go at any given point so you can judge when to start pushing the pace. Tim I wanna see some of that MTB porn with the new Wheels!!! |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Masters swim with Alex today. This was what she calls her "Happy Laps Workout"... another words lots of sprints paired up to race. I followed this up with a TM run. Log is posted. AOTD: Yes… and No. I have a Garmin 305 and quite frankly I wouldn’t understand how to use the HR data (and Zones) to my benefit. I use my Garmin (on my wrist) for MTN bike rides to develop maps and evaluate elevation. I wear the HR monitor on occasion just to see what it says. On Road rides I’ll toss the Garmin on my Aerobar mount to track time & distance. Again, occasionally I’ll use the HR monitor. I have also used the Garmin on a few runs for my upcoming Sprint but that was to ensure I was running the correct race course. If I understood how to use the full power of Garmin’s technology I would definitely use it and the HR monitor with regularity. In fact I was going to attend a Club Clinic on using a Garmin but got paged by the City that night and missed it. Any tips on a “Garmin 305 for Dummys” would be greatly appreciated. |

No problems other than I tend to veer to the right, so I can see where sighting is going to be an issue. Any tips? How are you currently sighting? I will take a sight breath every 3-4 breathes. Let's imagine your next breath is due your left side. So, at present your left arm is extended in front you and about ready to start the catch. Your right arm is starting recovery. As you prepare to sight, direct your eyes forward in the water toward the surface. As you right hand passes your head through recovery, start to look up. At the same time, direct the catch of the left arm slightly downward instead of straight back, which will help propel your head out of the water. After you sight, turn your head to the left while getting your breath and finish the extension on your right arm. Tough to explain! I'll try to clarify any questions. Also, from shore, try to identify landmarks on the horizon to follow. This really helps if the bouys are small, stuck in a big pack of people, waves, or chop. |

QUOTE] When running, I normally train by HR, not necessarily pace. So, for instance, if I go out for my long run, I will not let my HR move out of Zone 2. However, when on the bike, I like to use the HR to minimize the amount of time I perform anaerobically, especially in endurance races. I will let my HR control my pace by staying away from Zone 5 work. Also, when on the trainer, I do my workouts by HR. I can't afford a PowerTap after having my new wheels built. ![]() |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey guys, John mentioned that he does yoga on a regular basis. I do some yoga based stretching as well. What do the rest of you do to keep the muscles loose? On the QOTD, no heart rate monitor here. Maybe as my training progresses a bit. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Anybody doing yoga as part of their training program? Just curious.... I've been hitting an hour long class over the past week and I gotta tell ya.... it really helps. I've got a screwed up lower back and several times each week I have to sleep on the floor because of the pain. The yoga seems to be strengthening my core and improving my flexibility... and I'm about as flexible as a 2 x 4. I also like the meditation component.... helps clear the mind. |

I took Martial arts and then got off into boxing and full contact kick boxing from about 19 years old until I was about 30. I have managed to remained pretty flexable by just doing a few basic stretches after a workout. |
