Ahhh heaviness there and here. Just the vibe right now. I'm sorry Duane honestly for the kid and even HIS OWN SAKE, he needs to go lockdown.

Completely understandable with the case you're dealing with.  Such a sad situation.

Where ever you are - the States, Australia, New Zealand....

If you read in the paper that a kid (now 21, 20 at the time) was drinking and driving - BAC of .099 - open container - ran from the cops, did more than double the speed limit - killed a man sleeping in his bed and seriously wounded his wife (she's had 5 surgeries, one more planned - broke both legs - had a toe amputated and contracted MRSA while in the hospital) and had to move from her home of 40 years and his sentence was not prison, but probation your reaction would be________

There is no right or wrong answer - it's tough - I know - but this is not an "accident" - accidents are unavoidable.  The end result here was the unintended consequences of his intended actions.

crimefighter2 - 2010-10-30 12:04 PM I feel for the kids parents, for his brother and sisters.  For all the people that say he is a good kid - that he follows rules (really?  drinking, driving, underage, smoking dope, running from the law? but I digress)  - that he was a good kid when in cub scouts and I just want to scream what our victim witness coordinator said:

"Ok, other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the show?"

Ugh. No kidding.

Agreed.  I've seen this first hand, if they don't get a severe punishment the first time the behavior won't change.  In high school we had a kid take a 90 degree turn at 60mph, 4 times the speed limit for the turn.  The kid in the passenger seat ended up brain dead and his parents had to make that hard decision of cutting off life support.  Driver walked away, was never charged with anything even though this occurred late at night and he only had a restricted license which meant he couldnt drive past 6pm.  Not 6 months late the kid had t least 2 speeding tickets for going at least 25 over the speed limit... I just don't get how in the world he felt he could still drive like that.

Fry him?

That's my REACTION.

Such such horrible tragedies. If they are taken seriously, this kid has a chance of becoming an okay person. That means being responsible for his actions.

He gets let off EVERYBODY including him loses even more.

I would have more sympathy for the kid if his first reaction wasn't all about self pity - his life being over - he's almost got his 2 year degree....he's going to jail....he's not going home....

and then the going away party.

Not kidding.  We had a "mole" that was a facebook friend of his.  There was a going away party that "they" (I think his mom) advertised for him on facebook.

I would feel worse asking for prison if in the 5 months his been out and posting on facebook - that somewhere there was a public posting about the dangers and stupidity of drunk driving - something telling his friends and the world "don't be like me".  But there isn't.

He had/has a forum he could use for some good and hasn't done it.

He needs jail time.  A man is dead, his wife severely injured.  He needs to serve time for what he did.  No innocent person deserves to die or be injured, have their life turned upside down because you decided to get behind the wheel of a car intoxicated and then run from the cops.
