Elite 2998 Fishers, Indiana | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread cordova78 - 2011-08-20 1:57 PM So, I finished my first race of the season - a small, local Olympic distance. I took 2nd in AG and 9th OA - my first "podium" finish. While am happy with the 2nd AG finish, I am more impressed with my 10k run off of the bike - 7:08/mile. Now, I know that is not impressive for many on this site, but I am NOT a runner! Otherwise, I am back in NY from my business trip to FL and back to my training routine. I am PUMPED for my HIM next month. In a response to the Don Fink plan - I am using the plan, and obviously happy with my results. My bike has been my strong suit since starting this thing. The only supplementing I do for the bike is ride a much harder effort on my Saturday bike. I feel I can get away with this because my cycling base is relatively strong. You could always add more to the easy Sunday bike if you were looking for more. Nice job, Chris!! That is an awesome 10k run in an Olympic! Those can hurt!! Looking forward to seeing how your HIM goes next month! Today I did my longest ride since Coeur d'Alene, 81+ miles and feeling pretty solid, so that's good. This week was my "back to serious" training after some recovery/maintenance stuff post IMCdA and traveling and all. Run tomorrow and it'll be the end to a solid week back to it! |

I have a 2.4M OWS race in a couple of weeks, which should be really fun and am looking forward to my HIM on Sept. 11th! Hopefully all of this training will pay off! |

Great job on the podium! |

Regular 83 Chesterfield, MO | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Did an OLY this past weekend (which turned into a bike/run after the swim was cancelled due to weather) and finished 2nd in my division. For the first time, I really feel like I'm building some endurance. My bike split was solid on a hilly course with lots of wind (19.7avg) and I was amazed how I felt on the run. I am not fast (9:08avg), but found a comfortable pace early. Stayed in the zone and told myself to push the last 1.5 miles if I felt good. Neg split the run big time and felt great at the finish. Then ran 13 miles yesteray.....not so good! Oh well, good training for the marathon portio of the IM. Hope training is going well for all. |

Master 2621 Almaden Valley, San Jose, California | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread 12 weeks out! Everybody picking up the pace? Hard to believe that all of our IM friends are almost done.....and we've still got 3 months of training ahead of us! Riding 105 tomorrow......lots of hills. Thinking that after that, I should start looking for flatter training routes, with wind, to better train for the AZ course. What do you all think of that plan....especially those of you that have raced AZ in the past? |

What do you all think of that plan....especially those of you that have raced AZ in the past? I know last time I trained for AZ, I rode all the hilly routes where we live. When I finally got down there, I felt like it didn't fully prepare me for the more continuous-pedaling nature of the course (+ the wind, which is sometimes blocked more in the hills here). Granted it was my first time out and I wasn't that strong a cyclist, but I've been trying to hit more long uninterrupted flat windy routes this time to see if it makes a difference. I'm going a girls training weekend in AZ in October with friends so we'll see how I feel this time on the course! |

Master 1529 Living in the past | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread I'm looking forward to the next 12 weeks. I'm technically scheduled to do MOO in two weeks, but a bike vs. car showdown ended poorly for the bike and rider and I'm doubtful for the race. Sitting (limping) around this last week has got me stir crazy for some tri training and I'll be welcoming the return of normalcy. Be safe, be seen, and wear your helmet! |

Regular 83 Chesterfield, MO | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Hi Molly, I've been training the same way. I've spent more time on the flats with wind than I have in the hills. Did 60 miles with lots of climbs this past weekend, but mostly for building endurance. I've found that long flat rides with no free wheeling are sometimes just as difficult (and mentally more taxing!). I'll be in AZ Oct 22-24 to ride and run parts of the course as well. This week is my first "big" week. 5hr ride/5mile run brick this Sat followed by a 13 mile run on Sun. Happy training to all! |

I rode my first 100-miler of the year yesterday (and ran ~15.6 on Thursday) and thankfully now I get to taper for a 1/2 IM on Sep 11th. After that it'll be back to the big time again - these next 12 weeks are where the meat of the training is at! |

Extreme Veteran 610 San Francisco CA | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Is it really 12 weeks, yikes! I did an 85 mile ride Saturday and a 15 mile run Sunday so it's starting to feel like the training is getting serious. I'm also trying to get away from the hills and do some more flatish rides, though those are hard to find up here in SF. I'm heading to Napa to ride the Silverado trail next weekend to get a good flat ride in. A bunch of my friends did Ironman Canada yesterday and watching them on the live feed got me pumped up for IMAZ! |

You will like it - 1 stop sign in the entire 27 mile stretch makes for some good long uninterrupted training time. |

Extreme Veteran 710 Wilmington, NC | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Hi Guys, This is the first time I have posted in the IMAZ official thread! I will be doing IMAZ for the second time this year. I did in it 2009. I'm not sure how this year will go as I am just getting back to running after suffering from a labral tear in my right hip followed by a stress fracture in the same hip a month later. I am super excited to be coming back to do it though! It was a great course and lots of support! Less than 11 weeks to go! Woohoo!

Extreme Veteran 605 Centennial, CO | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Looks like lots of people getting in some long rides, etc. I got in a 2.5 mile swim Saturday and it really felt like nothing. I wasn't even a little bit tired. Sunday did a 90 mile ride/5 mile run. Volume is creeping up. 15 hours this week. Loads of 4+ hour rides coming up on Saturdays if anyone lives in CO and wants to get a group together just let me know. Riding alone that long is really boring Edited by syscrash 2011-08-30 7:59 PM |

I have no delusions here, just trying to "finish" my first IM. |

I had a slow start this month due to tapering for the Boulder 70.3. Looking to carefully ramp up the hours this month. A lot of work to do with less than 3 months to go!

I have no delusions here, just trying to "finish" my first IM. If there's anything I learned last time training for an IM, it's DO NOT worry about everyone else's #s (part of why I don't contribute my training numbers, it's kind of meaningless). Some people have done this a lot and handle high volume well, some people don't, some people are overtraining...the most important thing is to prepare YOUR body to handle the race and meet your goals while making it to the start line uninjured. Last time I trained for IM AZ, the goal was to finish and my coach made sure to get me there healthy despite all my weaknesses - this time I've spent 2 years strengthening and working a lot of those problem areas so I can do more - it's no better or worse, just different! |

Regular 83 Chesterfield, MO | Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread Hi Molly, I completely agree!! Luckily I have a coach and I trust and believe that she has me doing what's best for me. My training habits will not change to try and compare to others, I just am in awe how much time some put into IM. This is my first, and probably only, IM. I promised myself that I would enjoy the day no matter what happens. I starting training for this race at the end of August 2010. No way will I put that much time into something and NOT enjoy the experience! I know I will be ready, but as this is my first, I have no idea what to expect. Just follow my plan/nutrition and hope for the best. |
