Weekend is almost here!

Let's hear your training plans for the weekend!

Also, I've got a silly question for you folks... How do you organize your tri clothing? I feel so disorganized right now because mine is simply in milk crates... and I am looking for better ways and hanging doesn't work best.

Saturday - 45 minute run with 30 second strides every 5 minutes
Sunday - 2 hour bike, 45 minute run *might do this one as a brick if I'm feeling fresh in the morning

Hopefully I don't have to donate too much time at the office this weekend!

As far as clothing, all my workout gear is just thrown into my bottom dresser drawer pretty randomly. Recently, half of it is usually in the hamper at all times.

This was my week:

Monday: 5 am swim; 5 pm run (treadmill) and weight train
Tuesday:  5 am swim
Wednesday: 5:30 am bike; evening run
Thursday:  5 am swim
Friday: Brick 5:30 am bike/run (treadmill

Weekly Total: 7.5 hrs
Swim (3hrs)  Bike (1.5 hrs) Run (2 hrs) Weight training (1 hr

I made all of my planned workouts this week, so my plan for the weekend is to rest and relax :-)

There was a question earlier this week about what bike we were riding.  I have a Gary Fisher hybrid right now, but that's going to change shortly.  I'm adding a steed to the stable.  I'll let you know more soon and hopefully post some bike porn :-

tri clothes, swim kit in a bag rdy to go to the pool, run stuff is now in my work bag(just in case) and everything else is either hanging up or in a draw

this weekend its my wife's birthday,so i doubt I'll do any training tbh

I got a 3550 yd swim in today and still had a decent band practice.  Well besides throwing my sticks about half the time.  The swim had me cramping pretty badly in my calf but I eased through it and did and extra couple of sets of Pulls.

Jayne,
Sounds like an amazing week training for you.  I couldn't keep from doing training on the weekends if I had all those sessions in already.  I would have to find a couple more workouts to do just for some extra training........gotta get faster ya know.

Adam,
Make sure that you take of the wife before the training.  She''ll thank you for it later and you can play it off as "you're more important than my training Honey" and ohh the brownie points you'll earn.

Most of my tri clothes are mostly hung in the closet or folded and put in the drawer.  The others are hanging on the back of my bedroom door, in the bath room or in the laundry baskets.

Plans for the weekend are 9 mile run tomorrow morning followed by another 3000-3500 yard swim, Saturday a 1.5 hour bike and round the weekend out Sunday with a 5 mile run and a 1hour bike.  All that and my daughters conference swim championship all day on Saturday.  BTW, she swam a PR for her 500 tonight in a dual meet.  Time: 5:59.4  My PR for the 500 is 7:16....yep she can drown me in the water!!

Plans for the weekend are:
Saturday - Go to Adam's wife's birthday party
Sunday - (if not hungover) a 38min run in the morning and maybe a swim in the afternoon (probably about 1000-1500m)

It WAS a great training week, and I'm planning on adding a couple of minutes to my running intervals next week, but my right knee is feeling kind of funky.  It needs a good rest.  Goal #1  STAY INJURY FREE, right?

I have to admit, I did think about getting in a long slow bike ride, or a swim (the pool where I swim is closed on Monday.

I guess I'll have to see how I feel after we all go to Adam's wife's birthday party!  Yea!

Might go see B.B. King in concert Sunday night.

Oh, the clothes. . .

Swim stuff stays in a bag, biking/running clother in the dresser, and random, not tooooo dirty stuff, on hooks in the bathroom waiting to be worn again.  (laundry conservation plan), everything else either on the floor or in the dirty laundry.  Since I work out early in the morning, I always get things set out and organized the night before.  That way I can just get dressed and grab things in my morning stupor.

My laptop isn't functioning properly so I'm not able to use it, and as a result not getting online as often... what is the life expectancy of laptops typically???  I got it in May 2008, and I'm not sure if I should attempt to get some more life out of it by taking it into Best Buy or something, or just get a new one...  I guess I should take it in just to see what the problem is either way...

I swam yesterday, I *think* my shoulders are fine, I feel like there may be something wrong, but I also feel like I'm making it up in my mind because I'm just expecting it to be there!

I agree with the injury free thing and that's why I cut my 9 mile run to 7.4 today.  I wasn't liking the idea of cutting it short at all but it has been bothering me for a couple of days and this morning was just a little bit more.  I did more of a warm up than usual and it seemed to be fine except for running in the semi-packed slushy snow for the first mile or so and them the last 3/4 of a mile.

I have a higher end laptop for work that I have had for a few years and it seems to be doing alright.  It could just need cleaned up some but I am by no means any kind of expert.  If something needs fixing with tools other than a hammer and pliers it's better I don't touch it.

I hope the shoulder issues are a thing of the past for you.  You probably should just take it easy for a while to make sure there are no problems that surface until there has been a a little more healing take place.

Laptops can last a long time but my dad who's my go-to computer genius (seriously I don't know of one computer he's not been able to fix and some have been completely dead) says 2 years is good so unfortunately it may be getting old.

Got a run in today... been a bit of a slacker this week but between the snowstorm and being back with my friends, having fun before the stress of school became my first priority.  Back into training again but then today I found out the pool's closed because some pipe burst and now I probably can't swim until the end of January

Dirk, you'll be glad to know I didn't take the entire weekend off.

Got a short swim (1300 yd) in today and focused on form.  I've noticed that lately, I've been lifting my head a little before turning to take my breath.  Working to correct that.

Tomorrow is a run/lift day.

Having a "quiet" weekend.  Took yesterday as a rest day but still ran 2.5 miles during my gait analysis and took today as another rest day although I lifted in the gym and ran 20 minutes as a warm up on the treadmill.  Since ive been unemployed if I don't do 2 workouts a day I consider it a rest day.

Bodyfat testing done.  Looks like I have attained one of my goals without "trying"  I added weightlifting into my routine these last 5 weeks and boy has it really really helped!

My mini winter sprint is in 7 days so this will be a light week for me.  I do need to get out on the mtn bike on the snow.  Ive only been out once.  And I have found a new sport....XC skiing!  What a joy!

Happy training everyone!

No training for me today and here's why:  Drunk driving doesn't pay!  This guy broke an 85 foot pole and dropped power to 500 customers and many of them were businesses that will sue for lost revenue.  The cost for us to replace the pole will be $150k.  I wonder how many drinks this guy had and what the average cost of those will be after he factors in all the additional costs incurred at this pole?

I worked 17.5 hours on this pole......double time.

Ohhhhh my! that doesn't sound like any fun! Good money for you though!

A little bit of warmer weather (34*) here in Indy has me about to head outside for a run. I've been asked to run track for my University this spring so my Multisport activities have dropped significantly (ie no swimming and barely any biking). I am trying to build my running base right now. A mere 10 miles last week. BLAH, Hopefully this week will be in the 20 range and by the end of January I will be running ~25-30 (I know, 10% rule, but, if I am going to be in any shape to race a 5K by March... I need miles. and lots of them) My goal is going to be to qualify for Nationals in the HM. Run in the 1:16 range before the beginning of May. Lofty, I know.

I hope everyone is getting out there and training, the new years resolutionists will be starting to taper off, so enjoy the room at your gym!

With the work I had yesterday I am behind the eight ball already this week.  I am trying to force myself to accep that I am not going to be able to get what I would like in this week.  My daughter has 2 meets this week and since I didn't do anything yesterday I am dying because I know I will come nowhere near my targets for the week.

I am going to ride the trainer for 1.5 hours tonight and maybe another ride tomorrow night after the meet and a swim team family dinner, but I'll have to see what time all that is over before I can commit.  My mileage on the run will be way down but my swim volume should be the same because the only time I can get my swims in are back to back days.

I would have done the same thing.  I can't have open days and not train on some discipline.  I know, I have some type of psychological disorder.  Those focused days where you can get some intense form focus can really pay off later.

Well that's exciting!  I didn't even know there was a half marathon race at the collegiate level.  What is your PR in the half marathon?  What type of weekly mileage have you done in the past when you've raced that distance?  My own curiosity.

It was more of a desperation ask by the coach, he needs numbers... and I train with the team sometimes, so its an easy fix.

NAIA has the Marathon as a scored track event, to qualify for the Marathon, you have to run a half in (IIRC) 1:16:30. I've yet to race the distance in a dedicated season. I've done a couple while my mileage has been in the 20's and 30's. I would like to be in the 50's for about a month for me to feel confident in my ability. In HS I was a 40 MPW guy that ran a PR of 16:30 in the 5k, Ran 27:27 for 8K in college on 35-40 MPW but was in the 50-60 range all summer base.

Dirk,

Your job looks dangerous and cold, but the double time sounds good.  Don't stress about missing some training time, you have the rest of your life, right?

Tom,

Good luck on the team.  Are you at Butler, or IUPUI?

Everyone,

I have a swimming question for you all.  Keep in mind that I'm still really new to swimming and have what seems like NO endurance in the water.  I've been using fins for most of the workout.  The give me enough speed that it makes breathing easier.  And I think it helps mentally, I can concentrate more on form over a longer distance instead of getting tired so quickly.  I have been doing a few laps here and there during the workout without them.  But, I'm wondering if there will be problems down the road as I transition away from them.  What do you think?

Jayne,
The job is pretty cold this time of year but being outside much of the time makes things a lot better for me.  I don't like being locked up inside all the time.  I have to say I spend much more time in the office than I used to but that really just started last June (long story having to do with a severance program) but I have been a line crew supervisor for 6 years now so I am inside some of the time.

As far as the swim goes, I would start getting out of the fins for the bulk of your workouts.  IMO, you will develop a sort of dependency on them by using them all the time.  fins are a good tool to develop leg strength and a good kick but you need to learn good balance in the water without them.  I wouldn't get hung up that your not breathing tight without the fins, just keep practicing breathing (preferably bilaterally) and get used to the motion and your body will develop the muscle memory to do it right all the time  Just keep doing it over and over focusing on proper form.  Don't worry about speed, that will take time to develop as well,  Keep your form right from the start and it will be better for you in the long run.

Tom,
I am hoping to get to around 50 MPW later this year for a couple of months before my next marathon but I am not sure that will happen without giving up some stuff in other areas.  I had to give up the swim when I was getting ready for my marathon last year.  One day I would love to be within 10 minutes of 1:16:00 on a HM.  I am going to do the Geist HM in May and I will be shooting for a 1:35:00 or maybe a tad better if I'm lucky.

Jayne, I actually attend Marian. WAY less well known. As for swimming, I would echo what dirk said and urge you to try and get away from the fins. They are useful for portions of your workouts, however, I wouldn't say that using them for the majority of your work is helping you out.

Dirk, 1:35 is a nice time, and I've heard Geist is a nice race. Best of luck with that. I will probably be there volunteering. Is 2011 going to be more run focused for you? I'm going to try to run my qualifier at Sam Costa. And Swim will likely also be the first to go for me.
