I like the Clif shot blocks...Orange and Lemon-Lime are my favs.  I like GU gels...orange, lemon-lime, espresso, but I hate the chocolate flavors.  Just the thought of it makes me wanna hurl!  I am not a big chocolate fan unless it's white or dark or unless it is my wife's Ultimate Choc Chip cookies.  They are INCREDIBLE!!!!

Long rides I like Clif bars.  My fav by a long, long way is white choc macadamia but I will eat the most common and be okay with them.  I was in Cali in Oct. and found boxes of the white choc. and bought them out to bring them home so I could have them.  Back here they must not be as popular because I can't find boxes of them, I have to buy them individually.

Since we are talking drinks too, What are some good drinks and flavors for the road?  I usually carry Gatorade but I know it's not the best for you.  At home, to keep the carbs low and change the flavor up (I drink tons of water) I'll drink Powerade Zero.  The bottle says it's "good for you" but.....well....it is advertisement.  And, as Melanie said, "I can pronounce everything on the list."  Most of everything listed is either electrolytes or B vitamins.

I haven't experimented too much with energy bars other than Clif bars... they were a must during our 4 hour lactate practices on Saturday.  Chocolate Chip or Peanut Butter.

I don't like straight gatorade, I always buy the powder and water it down a bit.  My coach used to put some protein mix into our drinks during morning practices, but I don't remember what it was.

Finished my trainer workout this morning...it was rough...but I did it.  I wanted to fall off my bike when I was done with the last set...had to force myself to actually do the cool down.

But...I'm not dead...and I proved to myself that it's doable...so no excuses going forward.

Here's another random question for the group.  Now that we know what our favorite healthy snacks are...what's your favorite form of food/nutrition while training...like gels, drinks (gatorade, heed), or bars.

Well, that is an interesting question.  I've never had gels.  I've always heard they are like goo in the mouth and I've been reluctant to try them for fear they would make me gag.  I don't like the taste of most of the energy drinks.  I would go with a bar.  Unfortunately, I cannot recommend any because I haven't found one I really like.  So I am seeing a lot about Clif bars (a brand I am familiar with but just haven't used regularly).  I try those.  I just don't like to eat a lot of processed foods.

Along this same line, which protein powder do you like?  I've bought several.  My favorite so far is GNCs Amplified Wheybolic 60 (chocolate or vanilla), but I never know that what I am getting is actually good or a salesmen pitch.

Gels actually aren't that bad.  I was reluctant when I first took them...but some actually taste pretty good.  You just swallow it by chasing it with water.  Everyone's different though.

As far as protien...I haven't taken it for a while.  The way I eat, I don't really need it.  Although it can be a very convenient way to get in calories right after a workout...which is important.

I've tried GNC's AMP Weight gainer.  The guy at GNC said it's good for endurance athletes because it has a 2.5:1 ratio of carbs to protien (most people agree that 3:1 or 4:1 is a good ratio for endurance athletes)...unlike other protein mixes that have more protien than carbs.  I told him I didn't want to gain weight, but he said just to take half the recommended serving...which is still 375 calories.  So yeah...if 750 calories is the recommended serving...I can see how it would be a weight gainer.

It tasted really good for a protien shake (chocolate), but I didn't notice any difference from normal food.  The good thing about it is that you can mix it up in advance, throw it in a cooler, then drink it right after a long run or bike ride.  Hard to do that with normal food.

I had a 'more than decent' run last night. since I am going slow I am focusing on my form and I think it is helping with the pain I had cause its gone .
I noticed my stride was way to short, I made it a bit longer and focused on the turnovers. was done with the run much faster than I expected!
seems to me that running is now on its way and I have to think about the bike now!

I've been sick with a head cold for 7 days, but still getting in some workouts.  Felt really weak on parts of the bike ride today, but managed to get 2 hrs in and felt strong towards the end.  Weather here is 60-70.  Razzle dazzle!

I thought the speedplays were for people with bad knees because they have better free play, But I could be wrong.

There's actually a thread in Tri Talk about this now.

Looks like I may have been mistaken.  Or maybe I just heard backwards...LOL.  Like I said...I've never used speedplay before...so I was just going off what I heard...or maybe what I "thought" I heard.

Nice job finishing the workout!
Hit the gym for 2 1 hour spin classes, can't wait till it clears up hear so I can ride outside. I had 12 inches of snow on my driveway that I scraped last night. That was a good workout!

As far as stuff I use training, Cliff bars, Gatoraide, Muscle milk after gym workouts to get calorise and protein easy. I only used gu's when I ran the marathon but they were pretty good.

the way I eat.. I dont need protein.
I take some once in a while but only when I am doing lots of weight lifting. (now not the case).
as for training I can usually survive with Gus and G-ade.

Finally just got back into the swing of things after working 2 days and nights in a row.  Did a bike and a run at the gym.  Winter in Chicago sucks.  It is hard to get motivated to do anything when it is 20 degrees outside.
Looking forward to starting a new year and gearing up for alot of good workouts, a few races and shedding some pounds.
Happy New Year Everyone!Laughing

Alright, I just signed up for Galveston HIM (April 10)... no turning back now!  I just started triathlon in feb and have only done 2 sprints.  I've never biked more than 40 miles and I've never ran more than 10... so needless to say, I'm a little scared inside and I've got a lot of work to do... Help me Oprah!

Congrats.

Certainly doable...but you'll have to be disciplined about sticking to your workouts, and making them quality workouts.

You've announced your intention to 20+ people in this group...so you gotta deliver!!!

I got an easy 5k run and an easy bike in again today.  The run was kinda terrible.  I was on an empty stomach and didn't have any energy about half way through.  It was good thing it was an easy run.  My pace was over 8:00 miles which was my target.  I am getting a few extra miles this week and I want to make sure they are easy.

The bike was pretty easy to but mainly because it was short.  I only went for 45 minutes and kept the intensity low but a just a bit higher than yesterday.  I went 13.3 miles and my HR stayed in Z2 for almost all of the ride.

I have a 8-9 mile run scheduled for tomorrow and 1.5 hr. ride on the drainer on Saturday.  What is on everyone's plate for the long weekend?  I mean besides the New Years eve parties.

I'm going for an 8ish mile run after work today and going on a 45-55 mile group ride tomorrow morning.  May throw in a quick swim afterwards.

Saturday...whenever I wake up and recover...I hope to get in a 6-8 mile run at a real easy pace.  Just get out there...ignore the watch...and think about the year to come.

Sunday will be another morning group ride.

Just got off the trainer. Did an hour long ride and it felt good to finish. When I looked at my watch around 10 minutes I felt like cutting it short but I felt better as I went on and finished!

Standard can't go wrong gels is anything chocolate flavored.  Hard to screw that up...it's like chocolate frosting.  I recently tried the mandarin orange GU and really liked it.  I also like strawberry and tropical fruit shot blocks.  For really long rides (70+ miles) I'll use gatorade and cliff bars (chocolate chip) to mix things up and provide added calories so I don't need to eat 7 gels.

For my half marathons, I would just use vanilla GU. During the Baltimore Half, there's this one point where this person hands out gummy bears. Being an advocate of not doing anything new on race day, I never tried them....until this year, the third time I ran this race. They were yummy and didn't cause any problems!

Going to try and a get a short run in and see how my legs feel.

Plan for the day:
Watch UM get beat by Notre Dame (my dad and brothers are Hurricane fans)
Then watching my Seminoles walk all over Spurrier - this should be a good game

Happy New Years to everyone!
