I biked on the trainer last night for 30 minutes and could not get HR above 107.  Believe its due to low sleep (3 hrs due to getting called in to work)  Go off oncall at 5 today but back on call Friday ( loss lots of people) .  Just wondered if any one was going to see the Movie"HOOD TO COAST" tonight. I believe its a one night event. Its about the run from MT Hood to the Pacific coast.

Looks like a cool movie. Not playing in our town. Playing in Green Bay, Pam, are you going to see it?

Will have to wait for it to come out on video.

sozzie - 2011-01-10 7:49 PM Decided I didn't want to run inside tonight so I braved the cold weather and got a 9k (5.59m) run in.

Temp: -8c/17f
Temp with wind: -15c/5f

Shawn 1 : Winter 0.

Way to go, Are you shooting for double digits numbers in the Shawn column?

Getting out there in the cold is difficult for me the first couple of times but now it doesn't bother me. I just want to keep track of the coldest day I run in this year. (since I hated it so much before)

So far this season the coldest air temp we have been out in has been -8F, I know we have had some colder wind chill temps. Looks like next week we could double that figure.

Anyone ever been to the web site; dailymile.com (forum spammer)?

Cool site. I wasn't on there for all of 2010 but it says I burned over 900 donuts.

Today proved to me that I have committed to the training stuff. I got to the gym this morning and there was a sign posted on the window to the pool that said that the pool heater was not working and that maintenance was working on it. I decided to think about whether I would brave an unheated pool so I went and did 2 miles on the treadmill. As I was heading to the locker room I saw that someone was swimming so I decided to check it out. When I got to the pool the same person was still doing laps. I sat at the edge of the pool and stuck my foot in... BRRRRR!! it was ice cold! The problem was I had changed into my swimsuit and the pool looks into the gym... so I did not feel I could simply pick up my equipment and head back into the locker room so I said what the heck... how bad could it be! It took me 2 laps before I could breath regularly!!! At least this will be good practice for my first open water tri which will probably be in November here in AZ. I managed to do my 1000 meters.. but I am not sure I am willing to repeat it again on Thursday!

For a non-weather question, I am curious how you all treat recovery?  Any tricks for a relative novice?  Thanks in advance!

Chocolate milk and an ice bath.

Never tried the ice bath but I hear it is supposed to help speed up recovery, I like chocolate milk.

For me after a race I can't take anything. For the first few hours I just try not to puke, which is a bummer because I never get to eat any of the food they have at the finish. I guess it has something to do with lactic acid that builds up in the system during a race.

After a regular workout I drink chocolate silk, not as bad as you would think.

So how is everyones weight loss going?

I have been holding at 174.5. New Years Eve morning I weighed in at 172, think that must have been a fluke.

Dropped 3lbs. I have learned when I work the crazy hours with little sleep I don't want to trust the scale much. Got my first full 6 hours of sleep last night (was getting 2 to 4 a night since Thursday)

Movie was great!.  It even motivated my girlfriend to think she might want to incorporate more running. Our triathlon 20 week training starts next week.  She was thinking of how many people we could get to have our own team to do that race.  There was a paper handed out as we walked in about one something like it in Indiana called the cork and run.  www.corkandrun.com  So we was look at it. we are schedule to do that first tri at the same time the race is being done or I think she would have been trying to get a team built for the cork and run.
I was looking at my training log and seen where I had  screwed it up, it correct now. Do you keep your own log besides the one on this website?

Woke up this morning with a small stomach issue, decided not to run but postpone until this afternoon.

Let me answer some questions that have been thrown out:

(1)  Weight loss - I am at 3 lbs for the year, shooting for 20 lbs
(2)  Sleep - I have been trying to get anywhere from 7.5 to 9 hours a night.  I can't train on less than 7.5 and when my training hours increase to above 10 a week, I need the 9 hours a night.
(3)  Log book - I do keep a log book in addition to the training log online.  I don't think you can print out the comments from the BT log (or at least I don't know how) which are usually what I like to go back to look at.
(4)  Recovery - Love the chocolate milk;  I have done the ice bath, but only if my body is really hurting;  usually I just use a recovery shake or drink and rest for a day or two.
(5)  Swimming water temp - The pool I use is relatively new (1.5 years old) and when they were opening it up, the heater would stop working all the time.  The pool temp is normally cold (they favor lap swimmers) but this was crazy.  I actually wore my wetsuit in there once, just to stay warm (it is a saltwater pool, wetsuits not recommened in a chlorine pool).  I better get used to swimming in the cold, just found out that the Whirlpool Ironman 70.3 Steelhead water temp is normally 64 - 72 degrees F.  My wetsuit is shortsleeve and I don't see any room in the budget for a long sleeve one.

BTW, I just crossed over from Regular to Veteran on BT, still have a ways to go to be an Extreme Veteran like Lumber Dad.

If you are doing an Oly or a sprint tri I don't think the max finish time is that big of an issue if they even have one. When you get to the Ironman & Half Ironman is where you have to worry aboutmax finish time.

What are the distances of your race? Some races say Oly but will have a differant distance. For the swim you can look at your ave pace for 100M, then add a few minutes for the open water swim. What is your ave mph on the bike? Unless it is a hilly race you should be able to keep close to your ave. Depending on how well you run off the bike you might want to add a few minutes when you figure your run time. You will want to add a few minutes for your transition. Swim to bike may take longer if you try to dry off. It is a good idea to practice these before your first race. Make sure you take your helmet off after the bike, before you start running.

Hope some of this helps.

You can also look at the results from last years race to see where the back of pack people are finishing if you are worried about the time limit.

I volunteered at Steel head last year ( I believe water was on the warm side. ) It is a great race and I am looking to do it next year. Girlfriend and I will probably volunteer again this year so let me when you know your registration # and we will be looking for you and cheer you on.

I have log books dated back to around 1987. Last year was the first year that I stopped using a book and just used BT. I am trying to print out the monthly calendar and keeping that in a file.

It is cool to be able to go way back and see my weekly running miles. Back when I was young and putting in 60 miles a week running.

Oh don't worry, I'm going to beat winter down this year. The marathon training group is starting at the end of January. I'm going to be running with them Wednesday and Sunday's from the 30th of January till May 22nd.

My PB for a 5k is 28:17, I want to get it sub 25m and I want sub 50m for my 10k.

I've been doing well with my weight loss for the year, I'm about -5lbs since NYE. Need to keep that going. I want to be 175lbs before I go to Mexico in March.

Got the run and weights in, feel good.  When I got home, the shoes I ordered from Runner's Warehouse came in (my shoes are a 1/2 size too big, found that out after I started running).  I realized yesterday that I bought Asics Cumulus and not Asics Nimbus, which I need.  Why does Asics need to name their shoes so similarly and give them the same colors?  My mistake I guess.  Now I get to return them and get the correct ones.

Hope your training day was a great one.

I surprised myself with my first 5k distance with sub 8 minute miles.  7m 51s average!!   It actually felt really good.  I am really enjoying reading everyones post here.  Really motivating!!  Now I am going to enjoy my Kona 2010 DVD that showed up today.

My weight has actually been staying the same.. I drop 1-2 pounds and then gain them back. Part of the problem I think is that I have added additional workouts and changed up my program. Once I have that as a routine then I can focus on the diet. I average about 2000-2200 calories a day when I am not watching the calories closely so.. we shall see.

I am going to take another shot at the pool again tomorrow. I really hope they have fixed the heater because I really enjoy my swim days. I just have to remember that it is good training for when I do my open water tri in November.
