Nice to see a couple of new people!

Jeff, we were in Anchorage for 4.5 years and miss Alaska quite a bit. Unfortunately, between 2 deployments, 3 moves, and a pregnancy, we never made it to Fairbanks. Camped outside Denali for 3 nights, but that was as far as we got.

Swam today. 40 minutes, went well but was tired. Will post the details in my training log. Did 250 yd non-stop distance, though, so I'm happy with that. I struggled though, my arms are sore from the last couple of days.

Great news - new bike today!! Went to our bike shop and bought a women's Trek! I LOVE it! Getting it set up on the trainer as we speak. (Well, I'm not, my husband is!)

Wow! A new bike???????????? Pictures, please!

Hello I’m Jeff and I'm glad you reopened your group and hope to be considered. I was in another group that has seemed to fizzle.
I’m a 46 yo Pediatric Nurse from Fairbanks, AK.  I’ve coached and shared training my son through his evolvement through sport. Preparing for an empty nest I trained and participated in 2 triathlons last year, one being an Exterra off-road triathlon, also did a good amount of mountain biking.

I also started triathlon to loose weight. Through 2009-2010 I lost 40 lbs to my 5’11 frame and race triathlons at a clydesdale weight of 214 last year.  I’ve had to recover from (Pes insertion) tendentious of the left knee for 2 years in a row. In my recent recovery I’ve gained 12 lbs. of training deficit. My goal is dropping to a race weight below 200lbs for 2011.

Current training regimen-  elliptical and cross-country skiing  with yoga and core strength were used  for recovery. Minus a few work related setbacks, I'm into the second month of Olympic 20 week balanced.

Goals-

  • Weight loss to ease the burden on my knee.
  • Start 2011 with a duathon.
  • Midnight Sun Run 10k.
  • Repeat off-road triathlon and improve.
  • Confiscate sons road bike for Olympic triathlon.

I would like to join this group as I am new to BT and have learned for reading articles on this site last year. I believe taking an active group role would enhance my coming year and be a fun endeavor.
I would be interested in Kinesiology insights/practices as well.
Thanks, Jeff

Hi Jeff! Welcome to the group. Sorry to hear that your other group fell apart, but we're happy to have you. I don't want to scare you but you should know you're the first male to join us. Feeding frenzy?

How are you finding the training plan?

As for being the only male--Par for the course, I'm the only male nurse in my present department at work and the one I will be transferring to.
As for training plans I used BT training plans last year and have started with the Oly balanced for this year. Another goal is that once settled with work changes is to change my training program to be swim focused and work on run technique since I consider running as my nemesis to tendentious.
Thanks for the invite and I'm off for a run.

D001 -  Does anyone have tips for how to achieve balance in their lives????

Yes. Time management and self-care.

Self-care means having a plan for what you're going to do to care of yourself. As in, once a week I'm going to take a bath with candles and bubbles and red wine and the door locked. Or once a day I'm going to go for a walk by myself for 15 min and spend the time not thinking about kids and laundry and job stuff, but just enjoying nature and being outside.

Time management can be done lots of ways, but making and keeping a schedule is the best. When you think of it as a guide or a map instead of a prison, a schedule empowers you to achieve what you want to and come to peace with what you can not. Time Maps, an idea from Julie Morgenstern is something that I have found to be very helpful.

From http://www.juliemorgenstern.com/newsletter/2006/ezine0506.htm:

A time map is a powerful tool for becoming proactive amid the swirl of demands that come your way. Simply put, a Time Map is a budget of your day, week, or month that carves out distinct times for each of the key departments of your life. Instead of feeling that you have to act on every request the minute it crosses your path, your Time Map guides you, helping you determine whether you have time to handle an unexpected task, how much time you will devote to it and when you will do it. When you don’t have a Time Map, you have no idea what to do when. Every day is a total free-for-all. You just say yes to whatever screams loudest, with no perspective on how to prioritize incoming requests, and when you should be doing things. Of course, this is what leads to multi-tasking...just doing things as they come at you.

A Time Map provides structure to your day -- carving out regular time for what is most essential to you. Rest assured that a Time map can be adapted to your personal style, whether you thrive on routine or variety, whether you have complete or only partial control over your day. Built around your own custom set of priorities and personal style, your Time Map reflects who you are and what is important to you.

Hope that helps! I've got tons more material on both if  they would be helpful.

mbasta - 2011-01-26 4:42 AM1- What do you want to achieve?
2- Reword this in a concise (1-3 sentences) statement. Make the statement specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and give a time frame for completion.
3- What specifically can you do to achieve this goal? Write 3 action steps. (These are the rungs on the ladder leading to your goal.)

I am also a huge believer in goals! Thanks for having us all do this. In my field we refer to these as (1) long term goals, (2) short term goals, (3) actions, steps, or immediate goals.

1) Improve my overall health/Be in better shape

2) Get back to running 5k continuously
Increase comfort level in the water
    Reduce injury frequency & severity
    Continue loosing 1-2lbs/week

3) Running goals:
* Run 2x week, 1 inside 1 outside to slowly build up to all outside and head-off injury
* Focus on distance, not speed.
    Swimming goals:
* Swim 2x week
* 1st focused on technique, 2nd on endurance
    Injury prevention goals:
* Attend yoga class 2x week, focus on stretching hips and building core
* Stretch before & after run & swim sessions
    Weight goals:
* Go to bed at a reasonable hour to prevent late-night snacking & skipping breakfast.
* Stick to work-out plan (see above

In the classes I've taught on goal setting I've always told everyone this: Goals are tools. They work by providing us with something to measure our progress against so that we can see how we improve. They are tools, not mind readers, so you need to be honest with yourself when you write them. The more honest you are with where you are and what you can achieve the better they will measure. Goals are tape measures to see how far you have come. If you didn't get as far as you wanted don't pick up the ruler and beat yourself with it! Recalibrate and try again - that's what the tool of goals is there to help you with.

Subject: RE: Tri Curious - OPEN
Hi, end of January and I've found an open one - I was away at the begining of the year (Went to Auz to visit my sister) and then found out my husband is being posted in 60 days so was all action go to find a job, sort out the house etc. Anways here is a bit about me:

Name: Real name Sam (Never  Sammy haha)

Story: I have some health issues, but the main thing holding me back is that I keep getting injured. When I "run" (if you can call it that), I developed PF and knee problems. When I swim, I get rotator cuff issues, etc. The result is that my 2010 training totals were well below my 2009 totals. Instead of increasing my training, I *decreased* it. I'm hoping to reverse this situation in 2011. This means, I have to learn how to train without injuring myself.

I also tend to work too much, and exercise too little. I need to make 'training' a higher priority in my life, so that it gets done.

Why I'd like to join this group: your first post just made me smile, and that is always important

Races: This year I have a Sprint Triathlon in September, and a 5 km run in July - both which I'm brand new to.

Current training: Before I went to Australia mid-Dec I got into a habit and really started to enjoy myself - my first proper taste of exercise which was a bit of a shock. I've yet to get back into the system of things but I didn't loose too much fitness in Auz did a lot of walk!

Weightloss: I lost the weight last year with the Wii Fit and healthy eating, Wii Fit doesn't do anything bar flexability for me now but still eat healthy. I don't mind if I gain or lose weight I am more than happy in my body at the moment

What will make me a good mentee: I spend far too much time on BT but I love reading all the stories - although I'm rubbish with my training log on here, I keep up a blog at least 2 or 3 times a week - if not more.

If you don't find a better category to log it under, you could just click "custom sports" and create a category for it.

kkvane - 2011-01-26 10:39 PM My training has been going pretty well this week. Today was a good day here to have indoor options. I backed off some more on the speed today, and it was great! Still worked up a decent sweat, HR was up, came away with a nice little high, and wasn't totally dead afterward. Thanks again for the advice to slow down. It seems to be hard for that to sink into my head. ;-)I found out there's going to be a tri-a-tri at the Y, so thinking of signing up for that as a shorter-term goal. I think the goal-setting is great, though I haven't had time to do it yet. Always nice to have a carrot dangling out there....

Good to hear that your training is coming along well! I say go for the try-a-try! It's a great way to get your feet wet and begin the journey. Don't worry about being 100% ready. When is it? Is the event all indoors?

Yeah, it's all indoors. It's a Y-Tri (I'm a Y member). They have several dates, and I'm thinking of the latest one, March, 6. No distance measurements, all by time. 10 min swim/20 min bike/20 min run. I'm thinking I can do it...I have a month still to get ready!

mbasta - 2011-01-26 3:44 AM  How is everyone's training this week coming along?

Didn't do much Monday because of crazy pain in my left hip & knee, which I'm thinking is ITBand stuff.  Yesterday I was set on going to the gym and doing something since not doing anything Monday, despite the pain, was making me a little crazy. I ran for about 10 min on the elliptical and then did lots of core work. I wanted to do more running, but I was getting that tightness in my hip and knee and thought it was better if I stopped while I was still not in pain. Hopefully working on core stuff will help.

Just have to say....I love the quote at the end of your posts!!

kwynnc - 2011-01-26 1:34 PM Thanks for the feedback on the swim yesterday! Dee, I generally don't count kickboard in my totals just because it feels like cheating...Oh, and a small goal for today is to figure out the training log thing and start putting my workouts in there.

I always count my kickboard time. Anytime I'm in the water and moving...it counts. I just started doing the training log this week, too.

OK, I am not a goal setter. Ask me to set goals, and I become glassy-eyed and start drooling. That said, I read a good book that says basically "Some people are goal setters. Other people are problem solvers." So yes, I am a problem solver. When asked to set goals, I do better thinking of them as 'problems to be solved.' So, turning around Melissa's goal setting advice, I'd be better with this: 1- What problem do you want to fix? 2- Why specifically is this a problem? What are the consequences if you do NOT fix this problem? 3- What needs to be done to fix this problem? 4- Break down the 'fix' into small, manageable steps. (These are the rungs on the ladder leading to your solution.)

I never thought about turning it around like this - it makes so much sense to me! Thank you!!

Gonna "tri" this again...computer had a hissy....

Today was a running(wogging)/swim workout. Slowing up on the running is working out great. I'm trying really hard to focus on endurance rather than speed. I'm almost to the end of week 3 out of 6 on this plan, so feeling pretty good about that. No days missed so far....

On the swimming. I have questions again. Are there rules about the kind of stroke/the legality of the stroke that you use? I was flutter kicking today with a kickboard and honestly did not go anywhere. I do much better doing the frog legs. Can I float on my back for part of it? I'm working on my freestyle, but just wondering if I have options.  As usual, thank y'all for your support and patience....

It's supposed to be in the 50s here this weekend...thinking the running workout will be outside. Yay!!

Quite a few  folks in this blog living or have lived above the 48.
Congrads on the new Trek. My wife and son are getting new Treks this year. I will resign to do my Tri's  on the mountain bike again this year.
My run was 29 minutes and pushed the speed to develop form. Sill building a base, but felt the need to open up today.
Since I'm new to the sight I'm reviewing old blogs mbasta noted planning weekly topics. Scanning blogs I think it would be beneficial to have a discussion on training recovery.

Where are you living in Alaska? We moved down to the lower 48 from Anchorage and actually miss a lot of things about Alaska. I don't miss having to fly everywhere or the long winters, but I thought Anchorage was a great city. I'm hoping to do the Gold Nugget tri at some point.

Anchorage has a dedicated group of triathloner's  check out www.alaskatriathlon.org.

kwynnc - 2011-01-27 6:41 PM Nice to see a couple of new people!

Ooo new bike! I'm jelous! I was just talking to my husband about how I want a road bike because grinding along on my big box store mountain bike is a waste of perfectly good leg power. And a tad embarassing. Don't let this put anyone off if you're sporting a mountain bike! I did my whole first year on it and it worked great. Now that I am on season two i think i want a road bike...

Have fun with the new toy!

I'm still on the mountain bike for this year. My wife and son have road bikes this year and not planned in my budget at present.

Hi Jeff! What activities did you coach and train your son in? Congratulations on the weight loss! 40 lbs is awesome!

Skiing, hockey, biking would be the top three. He has long since surpassed my training ability and has been picked up by a local sports store team for biking and nordic skiing, is multi sport varsity in high school, starting biathlon and triathlon.
I will not reserve myself to sit idle and watch him have all the fun.

mbasta - 2011-01-27 9:57 PM You rock! Thanks again for taking care of this.
Hm. Did you just call me a rock? I know I haven't gone swimming in awhile, but I don't think I'm quite a rock.....

Don't taze me!

chillichick - 2011-01-27 11:22 PM Whew had a great work out today. Tried a Crossfit workout that I found on meetup.com it kicked my a$$! I've found a couple of biking, tri-training, yoga, exercise groups in my area on meetup. If you think it would help your training efforts to branch out I highly recommend checking meetup for groups in your area.

Now I just have to figure out how to log this workout????????

The best thing is to spend some time playing with the logs screen, it's pretty user friendly. Let me know if you're still having trouble.
